This was my first Dead concert. And they rocked Scarlet-Fire! I'm getting goosebumps writing now. I was 15y.o, and in an "airplane cast" with a broken shoulder, and everyone was super nice to me and careful not to bump me. Little kids, whole families, lots of friendly cheer. Found my brother after the concert on the steps of the capitol building helping a vendor sell burritos. Cops on horseback doing next to nothing. People sledding down snowdrifts. Wonderful scene. Unforgettable.

As i explore thier catalogue more and more, i'm surpised at why so many people hate on the 90's Dead so much. I'll admit the stigma surrounding it kept me away for a long time (i'm a Brent guy, but i was born in 88 and didnt see a show in person until last summer with Mayer). But this show rocks... as have the others i've watched now. They had a really clean sound it seems in these years (I always thought Brent was just dirty, like the band sounded like a smoke-filled, drug infused powerhouse- nothing wrong with that). Welnick isn't that memorable but he does the job, i think he's better without Hornsby taking over the whole mix of the show. This is one of the better shows of the hundreds i've watched on youtube this year, that first set is just smokin. Just my 2 cents

As a Deadhead who saw his first show in the spring of 1990...........people who dont know, dont know. I was a massive fan of Brent Mydland but Vince knew how to play and sing and the Dead sounded fine with him. Jerry deteriorated hard during that era but for whatever reason people have blamed Vince for that happening. None the less, they could still bring magic and did every show even if it was only in spurts throughout the night.

Vince is so hard for me to pin down. In some ways he is the best player they had in that he really could cover techniques from Pigpen to himself-- at least as a whole-- and there are many qualities in his playing that remind me strongly of a few keyboardists in the JGB. He is a good leader into interesting spaces. He has cool tech sounds. He plays great rhythm and knows when to come back, its just such a big loud sound when he really gets going. Its strange how we were conservative with him for some reason when in reality he could play all of it--- and with a lot of devotion to the music itself. Hardest job in the world probably being the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead. It doesn't end off stage. Am sure Vince spent a lot of time contemplating his position and performances and emotions around all of that. He was great. My only complaint is sometimes its too full when its loud gets really really big-- but then he comes right back to really nice seamless matrix inside the grateful dead. This was a good eternity

BEWARE : THIS POST IS A NOVEL. so, that's obvious. I just cant help it when it comes to GD discussion
its great to read Jeffs comments and the replies after.
I too have studied the GD's music, both with and without Jerry, since I saw my first show in 1990 (RFK - i was 15). I play guitar too, and even have a degree in classical guitar performance. (Im not posting that to be a bragger. There are a lot of people who have more knowledge and skill than me. I just mention it to show that im into understanding their playing. I try to replicate it but even after playing guitar and bass and a little piano for 30 years, i still cant play just like Jerry or Bob or Phil - i get close though!)
But I have taken a lot of time to listen to all the years of Jerry's playing. What's cool is that even still, there is a lot more left for me to listen to.
I did what most poeple do: I gravitated to the years I saw (late 80's/early 90') at first, and then I started to go backwards to the 60's and 70's. I noticed all the same things.
Then, when internet discussion of the dead really took off in the 00's, I heard all the same sorts of lazy opinions getting thrown out there about Jerry;s playing and the 90's with Vince. People saying they sucked after brent, stopped trying, and jerry got worse. WRONG. i like what one if them said - that all the way to the end of Jerry's time in the band, no matter the year or tour or what was going on in the band, when they stepped out on stage it was like stepping out into a sacred place where the music and the playing was THE MOST important thing and they continually evolved from that point, night after night, year after year.
The fact is, the dead never stopped evolving and improving. It's easy to get distracted by Vince's "cheesy" digital tones (he did not pick out the equipment and therefore sounds presets he used in his first years). And in 94 and 95, Jerry's carpal tunnel and BAD health gets in the way of his playing. But not EVERY show and every night. There are shows all the way towards the very end where that stuff wasnt in his way and he was as good as ever.
I have gone through almost every show from 93, 94, and 95. The truth is that 95, while having some shocking on stage moments where jerry lapsed, for the majority of the shows the band was evolving into yet another phase of their sound, where the drumming and bass became heavier and more together, and the jazzy sound of 94 becomes thicker and more of a group sound. March and June shows are actually quite good. Jerry's tone was best it was in years. I think maybe best tone ever. Some of my more favorite versions of certain songs EVER are in that year. I've made lists, Listened and re-listened.
And Vince actually is a MVP player during 94 and 95. His sounds and playing are some of the best ever on certain songs. Especially ballads. Piano tones were great. I can be specific but it's best to open your mind and check it out for yourself.
(If anyone wants to go straight to great shows or segments of shows from 94 and 95, let me know and ill post my finds)
Lastly, one of the most laughable of the "lazy opinions" i hear people cut and paste off of each other is this idea that Jerry's best playing was in, 74, or even any year in the 70's is SO OFF. I like the pure Fender Twin tone and that they are young, but that might be about it. His grasp on harmony, while always supernaturally talented for his age as a guitarist, and leaps above popular guitar improvisors in general, was nowhere near where he got to in 1993, even 1990.
Example: Just listen to "Deal" from the 70's. Anyone who plays guitar knows how hard it is to solo well over that chord progression. it's in A, but not really, There are secondary dominant chords (C#7) and diminshed chords that require you twist your 'A scale' to fit those chords or else you leave a lot on the table. In the 70's, Garcia is good, but in 90-93 (surely before, but def by then) he understands in his ear and fingers how to follow THOSE chords in his melodies and it just kicks ass.
If you think you don't care about that, you're wrong just cuz THAT stuff is why you like Garcia and GD to begin with... why you hear something special in it and why you follow it still.
No other band/guitarist/their original music does it... Phish is good though...

      @jgilmour9123 4 года назад +1

I'd like to go on a tangent too, if you don't mind...
People are scared to contest you because you're laying down the facts! Jerry's health is often talked about, and people often say that the 90s is all throwaway. However, In late 92 and all the way to 6/26/93, Jerry was KILLING it. He was clean, trying to lose some weight, and he was 100% mentally there on the stage. In my opinion, there was an immediate change in his playing when they resumed on 8/21 and 8/22. He was a lot more sloppy, he was hanging on the wrong notes, and making mistakes that he never used to make. His voice also changed drastically, which is an indicator he was using. I believe that's when he started to use again. People talk about that Eugene jack straw saying it's one of the best ever, and I'd have to disagree. Take a listen to the jack from 6/21/93, and if you compare them side by side you can clearly tell that Eugene wasn't that good. From then to December of that year the decline was FAST, and when they started again in 94, most of his decline had already occurred.
Another point I'd like to mention is that Jerry's heart was pretty much clogged up by late 94 and 95, and that's why he was playing so horrifically. He was still mentally there, as evidenced by the interview he had that in May 95, but as an addict it was obvious he had to get his fix right before shows started, because he wouldn't have access to any heroin until the set-break or after the show. His brain already wasn't getting enough oxygen, add in heroin and no wonder the poor guy was so disoriented on stage. I think his heroin problem in 95 wasn't even that bad, if you want Jerry on heroin look at 1984. He could still play very well in 84, but not 95. That's my theory on his performances in 95.
One last thing I'd like to say is that people rag on the April 93 shows and the January/February ones, saying Jerry was using. He definitely wasn't using, because he wouldn't have been able to clean up by march. Think about his condition- 2 kicked heroin addictions, a coma, emphysema, and numerous other health concerns, all while being 50/51 years old. Not many people of that age bounce back as well as Jerry did even WITHOUT all the other health conditions he was facing. If you know anything about the brain and drugs, you know that he probably didn't have much dopamine in his brain for a while. People always say that whenever Jerry is playing bad that it was drugs, and that simply isn't true at all. The poor guy can have a few off nights!
Just wanted to put those things out there for 90's naysayers. I believed Jerry peaked in technical ability and knowledge in fall 91 and the first half of 1993. There, I said it. Yes, Jerry was healthy and all in the 70's but he was nowhere near the maestro level he reached later in his life. His playing back then I find to be "immature" in tone and precision. I'm not discounting the 70's, they were very good, but I just don't think Jerry had blossomed yet.

@@jgilmour9123 right on!!! totally agree..... ive spent HOURS listening to GD from all eras and the band never stopped evolving and jerry always was getting better in different ways.... shame people cant hear past the cheesey leyboard sounds they assigned vince fort just a few tow tours or the couple times they heard Jerry miss a lick or some lyrics and they spread a black paint streak over literall hundreds of hours of music by a bad with a vast and varied output.
To me ,listening to all the years of the dead is like listening to a story of an adventure and I just dont want to miss any part of the story...

@@matthewmaurysmith2486 That's a great way to put it! That's the great thing about the dead, they were always changing and trying new things. It's such a shame people have to rag on the 90s like they do.

crushing attics. made me cry. that's right nola been here 6 hours now going over points of this show. that attics. attics is always perfect. is there a more beautiful song? I don't think so. I don't even think Brokedown is that pretty of notes. And brokedown is the only other song that comes to mind to meet an attics. maybe a dew. maybe a china doll could reach that feeling but Attics is the most beautiful song I have ever heard I think. And I listen to some real good classical music and jazz and blues guitar, and song and dance men and the grateful dead catalogue and jerry band that I can find. I have lots but you guys really should send me your Jerry Garcia band recordings. Really. Attics is the prettiest song ever. imho Peace and Love.

One thing I will never forget about these 2 shows at the Knick was how fuckin cold it was! My buddy and I drove up there from Long Island in my van and I don't know about him but I was trying to get some sleep on the bed in the back of my van but I couldn't because it was so fuckin cold. Now that I think about it I should have taken a walk around the parking lot and find myself a cute little hippie chick that I could try to keep warm with in my van. Damn I wish I could go back to 3/28/93.

Garcia had a whole style almost hidden. very excellent tenor operaesque vibrato. you can hear a little in the last lines of High Time. I heard him do it in some other ballad and it blew my mind how good his high tenor is. He was an amazing singer and got better and better at that

Jerry was in great shape coming out of 92 and taking the Fall off to get better. He had a new woman, lost weight and was sounding great. But slowly, things reverted , he dumped the chick and the discipline that helped him get back to being well and he looked really different in the Spring of 94. Then, I think his health started to shit the bed along w the bad habits coming on...and he started up again with Deborah, who in my eyes, didn't motivate him to want to be healthy like the woman he was with in 92/early 93. But, he was trying (I think) to get back to a good place when he checked out..by himself really. What could have been man....but, I remain eternally grateful.
