  • The backstory: I've know Lisa-X and her family since 2014. I've know Paul Reed Smith since 2013. Lisa was trying out a PRS at the 2018 PRS Experience here in Tokyo so I brought Paul over and introduced them to each other. Before this moment Paul knew nothing of Lisa so in his defense, he had NEVER heard her music and had no gauge of who she was or what she has done prior to this moment. For those people who want to attack him, I can tell you he was coming from a VERY good and kind position. The event was a part of the 2018 Gakki Fair.
    Paul kindly gives Lisa some wonderful advice on learning Melody to add to her amazing skills as a guitarist. Paul was very generous to give her some of his amazing wisdom. The Black & White parts are simply me translating Paul's words into Japanese.

    Obviously she is a fantastic guitar player and a prodigy. But how far would a ballerina prodigy go if she or he said "I am already brilliant so go away old man or old woman!" No, they realize that they have to learn from the masters. And does a ballet instructor always dance better than the ballerina....of course not. The intelligent artist learns from everybody and is humble. You can always get better. She ...believe it or not is still developing.

      Taking for granted that the guy is behaving like an absolute moron, he’s saying the right things in the wrong way. Lisa’s technique is undoubtedly astonishing, but won’t lead anywhere. A great sense of melody is what it takes to be a great musician, no matter what instrument you play. He gave her wonderful advice, but metalheads who hang out at Guitar Center striving to break the sound barrier or take their scales to light speed will never understand this distinction.

    I knew Paul when I worked at PRS years ago, and the guy was a great boss, I have nothing but respect for him. His advice, though a little belabored, is really good for any aspiring musician, but I find that you can't force that understanding. It comes with time and/or a real appreciation for the nuances of what you hear. I went through a shredder phase and it's fun and cool. To me the best exemplification of speed and melody I've ever heard is Tony MacApline's "Edge of Insanity'. He has a piano and composition background and though he's blazing fast, he came out with some seriously gorgeous melody alongside that. And yet, he evolved into more jazz and nuanced playing himself. Clapton used to burn barns too and, though I personally wasn't a fan, mellowed out with age. Then you still have others carrying the shredder torch high and they've found their place there. That's one of the things I love about music!

Her playing is not robotic or soulless. There is no such thing as a musician passionately playing their instrument somehow without soul merely because it is not to YOUR personal preference. I personally do not enjoy tech-death, for example, but I am sure plenty of musicians in that genre play their instruments passionately, regardless of how their shredding is perceived by ignorant outsiders. Just because YOU are not feeling something does not mean the musician and their intended audience are not feeling it.

    I would say on the one hand the interview is something of a fiasco -- Paul strikes me as one of those types who repeats what he says ad nauseum if he thinks you just don't "get it." And on the other (although Paul probably didn't know this), Lisa-X already mixes shreds and melodic motifs to her heart's content; of course you can't just stand there and shred all day long or there's nothing to latch onto and it just becomes boooring. The great ones like Satriani, EVH, John McLaughlin, all the way back to early Clapton, Page and Hendrix could shred up a storm but then crush it with unforgettable melodic motifs. Actually (and this is just IMHO) she reminds me very much of the best of EVH, in fact she already has that devastating pickless harmonic right hand technique that is one of his hallmarks, and probably 15 years younger than when he perfected it.

      Thank you for confirming that! Long pointless story: Someone else noticed similarities to Narumi's release, I confirmed he did both, knew Narumi/Disqualia were Lisa's band last year. I looked him up, didn't recognize his face but saw similarities in the studio room where Lisa's also done promo; then I talked myself out of it!, they must have used Narumi's guy, blah, blah. I noticed he also did Disqualia, Rami recently, and 2?3? of Fuki's bands in the past. OK, so: tracking down who was influencing Lisa led me to Rick Graham (indirectly), Troy Grady (thru MartyF, who quotes mimicking vocals as shaping his style), also Polyphia, Mateo Asato, all the Destrose family, because of Naon no Yaon '17, where she played Blackmore, Santana, at Show-Ya's fest (Keiko did side project w G.S.), with Mary's Blood, Cyntia, MurataTamu(fills in for GS,& I now follow prodigy drummers too), and most importantly to me, TomoZo, PRS user, who led me to the "GS" Gacharic Spin girls (my favs, so creative!), and thus Fuki(Doll$Boxx), full circle ... Whew. Point is, Thank you Lisa! (and Paul Gilbert for popularizing her) for getting me into the rest of the Japanese rock scene! Mikio was my fav too: found BabyMetal who uses Isao (as does Fuki), Hideki was in a band with Hana and in HS with Hana & Koga (both in GS with TomoZo), and ?? who is Ohmura's (thru Marty again!x2) band of choice for his last 3 birthday concerts? GacharicSpin!!! IMO, Mikio's the best, TomoZo most interesting, Lisa most potential. Thanks for letting me document that! :)
      -- Oh, more useless connections: I live in greater Baltimore area, know people who work at Paul's main shop. Now if I could just master my Santana, Gary Moore, & Blackmore, maybe I'll score a guitar Ha! "Stick to bass" is what they say to that...

    Just because she can play fast doesn't mean she's incapable of playing melodies. When Paul heard her play a fast run he just automatically assumed that she was unmelodic. His mimic of her playing a fast run and the "That's not a melody" remark, and then playing Jessica was uncalled for. He then brings up Orianthi - a PRS user - and compares her to Lisa. She isn't into The Allman Brothers, or Santana. That's what Paul is into. She's into Gilbert, Satriani, Govan, etc. She likes shred guitarist and that's OK. "Great job, kid. Keep it up" is all he needed to say. He might have meant well but this was in bad taste.

    2) she has already developed her own style and with keep evolving and she definitely has that "feeling" in her music;
    3) Paul's demonstration was rather..."not very nice sounding".... at all, if he's really a good player he should have shown his true skills in front of this technically advanced girl, but not treating her like a beginner;

    I can see why some people are upset by Paul’s comments.. but the father kind of seems rude lol?
    I mean even Paul was a bit too forward, it seems like her father expected Paul to just immediately tell her she was the best ever. Lisa is clearly a good player but her father bringing up music deals and RUclips views seems like he got pretty insecure when Paul just have gave some advice

    This is like me giving Arnold Schwarzeneggar advice on weight lifting. Would like to see her snatch the guitar from him and melt his face with a blistering solo, all the while blowing a pillar of flame and torching his crispy smoldering remains. OK, I feel better now, thank you.

    Some will say Paul was too critical in his lesson plan here. He seemed too over emphasize melody vs her chosen style of shred. However he is spot on in his message. If she heeds his examples of the guitar being a "voice" or mastering multiple "voices" she will go from niche shredder too world Artist quite easily. A Great example for Lisa-X would be Mikio and Holdsworth for some prime examples. Paul is a Hell of a guy and I bet Lisa-X will be a PRS player quite soon.

    • @JasonMcNamara

      @Ric, I doubt she will change from Ibanez any time soon. They have believed in her and supported her for a long time now. That counts for something. However I am an Ibanez player too and I will agree with you that PRS are incredible guitars. I think they are about as good as it gets.
      And yes, if Lisa follows what Paul said she really will have an even bigger future than she already has ahead of her.

    • @ricdale7813

      I absolutely Dig Ibanez as well. They make incredible instruments at every price point.@@JasonMcNamara Lisa-X is surely destined too make a mark in the Guitar World. The Japanese following she has is a Great indicator of how well she will do when she decides to go world wide. Marty Friedman thinks highly of her and that is quite a excellent letter of intent Imo. She is an Incredible young talent and her Family deserves a lot of credit as well.

    I literally lol'd when Paul said "Lemme show you".. Then played some sloppy incoherent blues licks.... It's like some really old kung fu hermit teaching a seasoned MMA fighter how to fight🤣
    Why would do he insist that his musical tastes is the be all end all? Music is SUBJECTIVE and he should not talk like that in front of a kid who is technically better than him... He's more like sour gaping rather than giving advice

      WTF he's talking about? It sounds like every old white male is emboldened by Donald Trump. He didn't even play a melodic guitar lick himself let alone giving lesson to a prodigy shredder. Funny how he tried to spin and double down when he learned Li-Sa-X is signed by Sony. What a despicable condescending old white male mentality! Not to mention PRS guitar is overrated. I once owned upto 7 electric guitars at the same time. None of them PRS. Just not impressed by PRS sound, muddy and plastic.

    • @joshwhite9211
      @joshwhite9211 5 лет назад

      Shredding does not make you a great guitar player. I know shredders you can't play cords hardly...their ears don't hear anything....if she develops w shred and Melody she will be more rounded and take guitar to next level. She's good, but has alot to learn besides speed.

      You have no idea what your talking about kid. He's talking about playing with soul. Playing with a flow. Not like a robot. If you had a clue you would know. So just sit your ass down, shut the fuck up, and learn and master something before you open your ignorant no nothing mouth.

      David Rhodes I don’t necessarily disagree, but this isn’t the way to behave with a young player like this. Especially if when you actually get the guitar you’re really not that great yourself! 🤣
      If the young player asks for advice that’s a different story but you don’t behave like this if you’ve got any manners and care about anything other than making yourself look like you’re super knowledgeable. The unfortunate thing with regards to Paul is that pretty much everything he does seems to be done with an air of “look how amazing I am”. He makes really nice guitars... he should be happy to get the praise that would naturally come his way from just doing a good job and not need to be this arrogant.
