Grocery Shopping in Switzerland

- I got asked to stop filming!!! Hahahah....must be more stealthy next time although that's kind of hard with the big open spaces and staff members everywhere. Just a note, this is a really big store - most grocery stores here are not quite as big as this but many metropolitan areas have one or two of these megastores where you can also find a restaurant, a phone store, electronics, home hardware and a drugstore beside the grocery.
Something I didn't address: the prices. Food prices in Switzerland are among the highest in all of Europe, for example much higher than in neighbouring countries like Germany or France. However, the quality of the food is in some ways also higher. Much of the meat comes from Swiss farms, and although the cost of having livestock in an expensive country like Switzerland is exorbitant, the quality of the meat is also really amazing. Organic food is very popular in Switzerland with usually a very large assortment available at all the big chain grocers. All organic food must be officially certified by an independent commission, and the criteria for becoming an organic farmer are very stringent. Swiss people in general care a lot about their food, where it comes from, the quality of the meat and produce, and the conditions the animals live in. However, all this comes at a pretty hefty price. Sometimes I wish food was cheaper and that Switzerland allowed more foreign imports to bring down prices, but on the other hand I think it is great that supporting Swiss farmers helps to keep up a high standard of food grade, versus cheap mass imports that are of inferior quality.
I LOVE grocery shopping in foreign countries, and just visiting the grocery stores is always fun and interesting.
This video is filled with unintentional asmr, been listening for year now! Thanks Julia!
I used to live in Zurich for a year..(1992-1993).....I miss it so so so much, especially the food, so I was thrilled to find your vid on youtube ! The Swiss yogurts? Dont even get me started! My personal fav was the Toni brand chestnut yogurt and the banana and pear flavored buttermilks! Seeing Coop again brings me back to all those great memories and great times in Zurich!
Greetings from Algeria M.B
So enjoyed your video......just found your channel today. I live in the United States and I have always wanted to visit Switzerland.....such a beautiful place. And this was interesting to see your grocery store in comparison to ours.....even though you did get kicked out! LOL! Will be watching more!
So interesting to see the look of stores in other countries - things are presented so beautifully in that store you were in. Thank you so much for sharing :)
+kaitlyn X This one is quite a bit larger than your typical Swiss supermarket however. I actually prefer when you don't have to walk around so much to get everything you need.
thanks for sharing this informative video. We are planning to visit Switzerland next year for the first time.
Omg, I want to live in Switzerland now. All those varieties to choose from!
Thanks. Grocery says a lot about people and food habits as well as economy. Thanks
Migros is my favourite... especially as i can get Frey there :P
So happy to see you again, its been 10 mounths ago I,!!!! LOVE SWITZERLAND !!!! HOPE TO MOVE ASAP, See you in the future.
I would love to visit Switzerland one day
I live there. :P
thank you julia, for taking the time to share your day with us, and making the videos to show someone like me~a united states gal~what it is like in other parts of the world! my son and i have really enjoyed all of your videos!
So the Swiss have grocery stores, just like we do in Massachusetts. OK
Actually it was a Carrefour before! :) But this chain left Switzerland entirely and Coop took over. Since they took over the store last year, they changed it up and renovated it. This Coop is so much better than the Carrefour that was in its place before tbh. Especially the produce is much fresher.
wall mart should put one of those machines that tells you the price of the fruit or vegetables
I could not stop laughing at your "getting stared at" commentaries. And the fact that you can laugh at yourself as well makes this video 100 times better! Thank you for the upload!
Since they heard you talking, you could film silently with a hidden camera, and add the words later.
I absolutely loved this vid. Thank you sooo much for sharing your country with us. Please keep them coming!!!!!
food is not all that expensive, if you compare it with the incomes. If you want high-quality foods you will pay higher prices, but it's worth it. BTW we do drink quite a lot of beer, and there are excellent small breweries that sell their stuff even at COOP.
PeterNGloor
It's just the most expensive food in the world.
PeterNGloor About 5x as expensive as in the US.
Compare It with which income? Lot of people is happy to reach 3000 per month ...
Life How We See It The Ministry of Propaganda doesn't know this yet! And by the way, food prices have nothing to do with labour incomes. Of course, the non-labour incomes like profits and rents have to do with it. Switzerland just steals the money from the poor to give it to the rich.
Juri Vlk yeah sure, I compared some stuff and the prices are so fucking the same shit, and some shit are cheaper here then in other countries, that's all, still thinking that Switzerland have the most expensive food in the world.
I really love watching travel channels! I think it's great for you to create this new channel, and show us more of your social scene. Thanks!
I wish she would stop saying "everyone's looking at me like I'm crazy" God, get over yourself.
Oh, how funny.I used to shop at a coop in Germany while I lived there!!! I had totally forgotten about those!!!! Thank you so much for this video!!!! It brings back so many memories!!!!!!!!!!
I was waiting for the chocolates 🍫😞
What a random video! I found this so funny for so reason... "Here we have a wall of socks..." cracked me up for some reason hahaha.

It's pretty common in Europe as a whole for supermarkets to sell alcohol I think. They do here in the Netherlands as well. But only undistilled alcoholic drinks like beer and wine.
it's cooooooop not co-op

Col, thanks for making this video. Super interesting! Really like your Swiss and trip videos.
Was going thru your health videos and came across this. Wanted to say a big THANK YOU for doing this, esp when you get nothing outtav it. Getting kicked out is quite embarrassing but your video really helped, esp the part of how to weigh and tag the fruits. I get a tad confused whenever I hit the European supermarkets, esp with fruits and such. Thanks again! Lotsa love!
You are so awesome! Thanks for showing us your country. It's very educational. I would love to see Switzerland some day.
I was in Switzerland briefly and I was shocked for how obsessed they were with being neat, clean and orderly. Even the cars in the junk yards were all arranged in neat rows and columns. I saw some one wiping down a traffic light.
Hi Julia - Thanks for all the videos on Switzerland. I am on my way to Geneva in June for a couple of months, can not wait. I miss it a lot!
Very nice short video...it's show that Switzerland is very tidy and very much in order in many ways. very high quality stuff...and has in-deed the highest standard of living in the world. thanks for your film.
I very much enjoyed your video, having just found your two channels. I'm from Ontario, so this was very much of interest. Thanks!!
Love it!!!! Thanks for making this video. It 's a little shaky, off focus, but really useful.
Wow! I'm all for good quality...i mean really good quality...I wouldn't mind paying the price for some real good quality food! The store looked AMAZING! The selections, wow! So many selections, I mean look it all the cheese and yogurt! Cool! I would have loved to those aisles of CHOCOLATE!!! Swiss chocolate are like THE BEST!!!!
Thanks so much Julia! Love the video!
Oh god I cannot believe I did not follow your second channel. Must subscribe!

Very interesting! Thanks for the video. I'd love to see more videos of your country.
That was so cool and interesting. I am amazed at the selection. Unreal.
The general impression is how expensive Switzerland is. I hope you can do more videos focusing on the prices and price differences among various commonly used products. for e.g. how much does bread cost in stores compared to US or places you been to and stuff like that. thanks for showing us a lil part of this beautiful country.
You are awsome,I live in USA but I love these videos of shops and living in different places. Thx
When I go on hollyday in Switserland, the first thing I do is go to the COOP . Thanks for charing, brings back memories.
this is awesome! i love looking at grocery stores in different countries... you can find the tastiest and the weirdest foods! LOL
Thanks for the informative video...very helpful would love to visit!
I think that was very cool of you to make this video even knowing you weren't supposed to ;-) I haven't had the opportunity to travel to Europe so it's really neat to see these sorts of things :) Thanks!
Good stealth video. Note to your viewers visiting a Coop for the first time, make sure you weigh your fruit and or veggies in the plastic bag and place the price sticker on the bag or the cashier has to run back to the produce area to do so. This is what happens at my local Coop and it ticks off the other customers waiting in line behind you.
This was very interesting, I liked it! Can't wait for more places to see!
That was a really cool video. I didnt know yoou had this second channel until today. i loved seeing the grocery store. Im in Ontario, Canada and i have never been to swtizerland but it sounds awesome and id love to come there sometime
Thank you SOOO much this is soo cool!!!! I love seeing other parts of the world like threw someones eyes who lives it daily.
Cool! Thanks for the tour! Love it!
Thanks for your courageous reporting! Great to know what is going on in a Swiss supermarket. Very information and useful for travellers, especially backpackers.
Well done! The supermarkets are big there! Hire in Holland are miniature. nice video!
On 5:50 the lady didn't mention that Emmentaler (what Americans call Swiss cheese) comes in three different varieties:
Mild, salty and "cave matured". Believe me, it's true!
Loved your video! I'm from Geneva and it's cool to see my country from a foreigner's point of view.
very niiiice video
Thanks Julia for sharing it with us. I like on the go reviews.
i liked watching this!!!
its fun looking at how it is different in othere countries!
Hey I like the way you have presented this, is very down to earth instructive and not biased by any means, a great aid for any one that will travel, showing the points of interest away from the turist perspective, congrats. ernest.
And don't lock in fight with idiots,,let them go with their grief somewhere else.
Those designed bottles!!!really cool ,i would buy them no matter what they contain
Very interesting. I never thought you could buy things in a grocery store. Next time I see one I'll now!

This video makes me want to move to Switzerland just for the grocery shopping!! The yogurt and cheese!? OMG!!
In Louisiana, We can buy everything all at once. We have different shops, stores. Thanks for your bravery!! It reminds me when I was in Darmstadt, Germany! I loved that place :)
YOU LOOK SOOOOOOO PRETTYYYY HERE!!!! NO joke, this is the best look I've EVER seen on you! You're features are so nice btw!
Ahahaha talking to a wall of beer, I love it.
I live in Miami, Florida (USA) and we have wine, beer etc in our markets as well. I was shocked to find out this isnt the trend in other US cities. Btw, thanks for doing these posts. Im contemplating visiting Switzerland due to your vids :)
i am so glad you did this video!! once I saw your photos of Switzerland on Facebook, i've wanted to visit really badly!
Hi thanks to ur video, I get interested of watching this Grocery in Switzerland as I’m going to visit my daughter in Zurich. Yeah, it’s a bit pricey.. compared here in Australia where I live..😊😍 I enjoyed watching anyway. More power to your channel..👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks for your endeavor!
I loved this video, not because I didn't know this things before, I go shopping to coop sometimes, too, i loved it because it's really interesting to know the differences to canada and to read the comments from people outta different countries.
The next time I'm going to coop I'm goin to realise everything completely different, just because of your vid (:
everything is written in german, french and italian, well most things, depends on in which part of switzerland you live.
it seemed to be filmed in bern,so everything that has to do with food(at least)is in the 3 major languages we have.f.e. milk is always ;milch,lait,latte....
so,german,french and italian.
Please keep sharing videos about Switzerland!❤ It's my dream to go there one day 😢❣
thank you tsunimee, I'm still trying to look for it. I visited your channel, good job. the bloopers are cute :)
Haha yeah, actually they were polite, they just asked me to stop filming so I did. But I ended up buying something anyway. :)
Here in Spain we have more or less the same in our grocery shops, lot´s of wines and spirits, same ages for buying, lots of dairies and juices, and real bread, we buy it fresh every day, actually the next day is hard as a stone! :)
Thanks for sharing. I always see so few people in the streets and stores in videos of Switzerland. ..the trams cars are empty too
that was fun, it's interesting to see a sneak peak into peoples lifestyles, I think I might have to holiday in switzerland it looks like a fabulous place to live.
I love your yogurt section, and flavors. Your grocery store reminds me of our local HEB food market in Texas. I would love to visit , if only for the cheese, chocolate and wine LOL ;-)
This makes me want to spend a week inside a grocery store in Switzerland. I'll go crazy in the chocolate & cheese aisles :D
thank you for posting and doing this video!
great video, I wish you could do more vid's like this... Hopefully they will let you next time cause I so.... enjoyed this video!!! ^^
haha, das ist ja rieeeesig :-) mag solche "random" videos von dir :-)
bisous, Ruth
I work at a Coop in Norway. Way smaller than this one though. We sell mostly food.
I loved that fruit machine thingy. My least favourite thing in the world is remembering the codes for all the types of fruit we have.
I also wish Norway had the same rules with alcohol as in Switzerland. We only sell beer and other alcoholic beverages with under 5% alcohol in them in regular stores.
Omg, I miss Europe SO much. I love this video! Actually, I would love any video you film showing life in Switzerland. I've not been there yet, but it's definitely on my list of countries to visit. Thanks a bunch and keep 'em coming!
@middletech i would recommend getting a job in switzerland, staying in a hotel for a couple of weeks till you get money saved up for a place. it may be expensive there, but you have to remember the pay rate is higher there too.
