1939 was the greatest year in the history of cinema. Stagecoach, Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz all came out that year and would have a defining influence on filmmakers for generations to come. I’d argue this movie is the most important of the 3 due to Ford and Wayne’s influence.
Other of my personal favorites (maybe not as influential) from that year: "Beau Geste," "Gunga Din," "In Name Only," "Drums Along the Mohawk," "Destry Rides Again," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "The Flying Deuces," "Of Mice and Men."
Have seen this several times, but am only just now noticing Yakima Canutt in the very beginning. Great stunt man and he was with John Wayne in many of his movies in the 1930s.
I played the music from 'Stagecoah' and 'Fort Apache' on my car`s CD system when my family and I drove through Monument Valley and Mt.Zion National Park when went cross country from NJ to 'do' the Southwest in dept.
This was a superb western film, directed by the great John Ford. Pathos, humour, drama, action and amazing desert landscape, all contributed to this movie deserving a motion picture iconic status. It had a very strong cast, with John Wayne, playing the laconic cowboy and anti hero, Ringo, Thomas Mitchell putting in a brilliant performance as the cigar chomping and hard drinking doctor with a heart of gold and the wonderful John Carradine, cast as the gentleman southern gambler. Andy Devine was hilarious as the stage coach driver Buck, together with George Bancroft as the tough and duty minded sheriff, Curley. Claire Trevor playing the sweet natured ‘woman of the night’ character is a perfect foil to John Wayne’s character. The haunting film score brilliantly captured the rugged beauty and danger of the inhospitable and arid landscape.
The beginning where the stage leaves through the gateway into Monument Valley at 15:02 is the same view that is in My Darling Clementine at its ending shot..
The great character actor, Thomas Mitchell, as the bibulous doctor, was a regular scene stealer. Here he plays a loveable wayward rogue, but a courageous social outsider, willing to put his life at risk when the need arises. Also, special mention should be made of the highly talented actor, John Carradine, perfectly cast as the enigmatic southern gentleman gambler.
Doc's quote “Was this the face that launched a thousand ships?” is a line from Christopher Marlowe's play "Dr. Faustus". IThe ledendary stuntman is Yakima Canutt. He directed the chariot race scene in Ben Hur.
One of my favorite scenes from stagecoach 1939 when Ringo kid gets revenge on the Luke Plummer and The Ringo kid meant every word of it to get Even with the Plummerboys who shot Ringo kid brother and father
This movie beats the britches offa anything h.weird puts out today. This movie, Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence are perfect in black and white. Some movies should not be in color and this is one of em.
Hatfield stated that her father commanded his company during the war. As such, he was accompanying her in a show of loyalty to her father. Whether you believe that is the sole reason for his actions, you may decide for yourself.

John Ford , top director...not a very nice man.He and Alfred Hitchcock both responsible for destroying the careers of budding actors...just to appease their god of ARROGANCE .. I've always considered them to be very unprepossessing ( thats being kind )
There is nothing better than watching a black and white western on a Sunday night before going to bed sipping on some tea
amen!
Yep. Can’t abide the colourised versions. Who came up with that stupid idea.
Sure there is-watching TWO of them!
@@brerrabbit9585 ... and spikng the tea!!

Yes great music. I like instrumental music is a calming feeling. I enjoy it while reading or studying for classes in school.

You forgot Donald Meek the whiskey peddler ,Hombre.
One of the first, best, greatest Westerns of all time, setting the stage for what an action adventure should be. Ford was a natural born film maker.
Dallas and Ringo kid showed respect for each other
I love the name Dallas for a woman. I wonder how many women that are named Dallas now. 😊😊😊😊

Groundbreaking year for films and perhaps the greatest year for films

All the iterations of this movie were fantastic.
The stuntmen were amazing.
The REAL LADY in that coach was DALLAS ...WHAT A FILM , WHAT A GREAT CAST .
One of my favorite movies!
John Caradine appeared in many John Wayne films including his last The Shootist.
If there was one year I could go back to just to watch movies, it’d be 1939
Stagecoach , Star Wars it's about the story with some nice special effects , it has to have a story and when the guy gets the girl it is timeless
Fabulous little adventure!

John Wayne and Claire Trevor both started acting in the late 20's and early 1930's

Mrs Malory, the little snot, being so self-righteous with Dallas. I wouldn’t trade a dozen or her for one Dallas of her. 😮😮😮😮😊😊😊
Great movie but what was the relationship between Lucy and Hatfield?
Hatfield saved 1 last bullet for Lucy in case they were overwhelmed by the Apache. He would’ve spared her a gruesome fate.
Hatfield stated that her father commanded his company during the war. As such, he was accompanying her in a show of loyalty to her father. Whether you believe that is the sole reason for his actions, you may decide for yourself.

Claire Trevor was Hollywoods best whiner bar none. She could really make one look for the cheese when she got going.😂😂
When Doc was wiping the whiskey drummers face it was just creepy . Otherwise an excellent film .Good character study

At least one movie starring John Wayne without a knock down drag out fight in it. I got so tired of them. 😊

John Wayne plays the hero, but failed to enlist in WWII.
Tried to enlist but contracts with RKO had them requesting deferments for Wayne, their only A lister.
Yeah. John Wayne was a pretty good actor when he was young but later, he started to believe all the hype about himself and his acting suffered.
Neither did Ronald Reagan
And still raised more money to support the war effort then most. His movies in support of the armed forces/war effort are second to none.
@@JohnDoe-wb4iv Wrong. Reagan was in the Army.
