  • Katy and Devon show how to grow microgreens in the hydroponic greenhouse. This method can be scaled down for at home growers. We go over varieties, cleaning/sanitizing, growing medium, seeding, growing and harvesting hydroponic microgreens. Stick around for a quick livestock update. The pigs are getting big and we are still waiting for calves.

Details on the pump size, nutrient mix, PH and EC...etc....All the infrastructure that goes into the operation.Also...details on the Farmer's Market...what you sell in your area....how you package it....what you charge / Cost / per volume etc. All the best folks....

    City boy here with a dream to be a farmer. :). Don’t make fun of me. 😂. My question. I have built a 450 hole hydroponic system in my big window loft. Grew lettuce. I understand how those chemicals work. I’m a nerd so I created a self ph system and had a water purifier that auto filled the system. It was a flood system. Seems to be too Re reliable than the misting spray systems as they break. How does your system water micro greens? Seems like it would wash the seeds away? Do you wait? Do you push a button? Is it manual? Do you have separate nutetsnts mix? Like more water none of the other stuff? Basically how fo you flood it with out washing the seeds.

      Of course and that's great! I'm going to plant some microgreens this week and film it. I'll show the end of the emitter we use. We have the regular tube emitters hooked up to the microgreen channels along with a reducer. The nutrient solution drips out rather than a stream or else all of the seeds would wash away to the return pipe. Sounds like you have it figured out and yes we let the nutrients run 24/7 and same flow the whole time. 😀 -Devon

      Yep the same. They get the same nutrients as the lettuce, and it's running 24/7. We do reduce the flow out of the emitters or else the seeds get washed away.

      @@HomegrownPassion Great thanks!!!. When I put my smaller veggies in my trays, I put a small piece of vinyl screen over the end of the tube.It disperses the water across the whole tray and doesn't knock the first plant over or slide it around. Seems to work, and this way I can use the same pump for all my trays.. I never thought of the emitters:) That will work better for the microgreens. Thanks!!

    Great videos and info! Can you let me know what type of emitters you use? I see some on the beans, but not on the micros or spinach, but might not be able to see them from the videos.

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 года назад +2

      The emitters are just tubing that is stuck into the channels. The microgreens use the same tubing, but with a reducer attached so the stream doesn't wash all of the seeds away. www.cropking.com/catalog/bato-system-components-tubing-irrigation-nft-system-components-system-components/feed-tube

    Do you use the full strength nutient solution on microgreens that is used for the rest of your crop? Also, are the nutrients running thru the channels immediately after putting seeds in? Do you use an antifungal?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 года назад

      Yes the microgreens get the same nutrients as the rest of the NFT system. We hook the emitters up right after the seeds are planted, but we do have a reducer on there to keep the seeds from washing away before they take root in the growing medium. We use a product called Hypogrow. It's not an antifungal, but it really helps keep the system clean and promotes healthy roots.

      I was wondering the same thing.
      But I also suspect that feeding isn’t necessary because a sprouting seed contains all the energy required to get the plant to it’s first true leaf set, the proper harvesting time for microgreens so why feed?
      A seed is the essence of life.
      It can lie dormant for years and then sprout a fast growing tree in the middle of a concrete heat jungle the moment a crack appears and a bit of moisture gets in. And many of these microgreen crops are brassicas, otherwise known as lettuce or, when they pop up in the middle of the sidewalk, weeds. Tough plants with a powerful life force and will to grow.
      I’m not a big fan of hydroponics, or any growing method that isn’t self sustaining and in harmony with the natural world. We need to focus on preserving our own habitat or we won’t have one much longer.
      That said I was looking for ways to reduce disposable materials and costs, cut down the labor intensive process as much as possible and supply a living product..
      And here I’ve found exactly what I needed! In the single use growing medium that can stay intact to sale, at least until my Moringa and bamboo are established and big enough to harvest for materials. And the single long tray set up will make harvest a breeze; simply cut the growing medium to the predetermined sale container length..where I’ve also left an unseeded cut line so little dies in the cutting, then rinse and package still living!

    Just some questions about the grow medium in the channels;
    What is it made of?

    Or once the channel has finished it's cycle, you have to dump the medium?
