I lived in the projects for 12 years. This vlog is so right. Ive seen whole families who have lived there since the forties. You have grandmothers, daughters and grand daughters all having babies. Your entire life is surrounded by maybe 6blocks of concrete housings. God blessed me and my sons and I moved out in 96. I pray 🙏 that these men and their families will be able to move out.
Some can't, others don't want to.

I'm glad back in 2010 @ the age of 21 something clicked in my head and told me to leave the hood & take my black ass to truck driving school, today I own three 18 wheelers & have my own authority living in Dallas,Tx w/o having to look over my shoulders everywhere I go unlike my past & I thank God everyday.
Good for you, hope your reaching back to the youth back in your community
man god bless you brother that is beautiful
Well done! That is awesome
Congrats dude
Good shit brotha 👏🏾💯
We lived there from ‘54-‘66. I was very little. There were playgrounds for the kids and you could walk around there like after midnight and no one would bother you. It was mainly poor Black working families. No shooting, cussing, break-ins, drugs, etc. I just remember a community of people helping each other and us kids felt very safe. No problems at all. I have not been there since we left in 1966. Wow! What I see and hear saddens me that it has gone to this? Just wow. We moved shortly after the Watts riots. Folks saved enough for a nice house. Us kids all worked and/or college then careers. I really can’t believe what I’m seeing here. Wow.
It was real bad in the 80s and 90s you wouldn't even have wanted to walk around there
These folks who live in watts now are enemies of the people, they are only concerned with destroying
I'm far more interested in hearing more from that older woman talking about the 60s than the others just flashing $20 bills around.
Are you interested in hearing my fart🤣😂😁
She was a fool too. 60 years ago was still oppressed and broke and living in horrendous conditions
@G Worsham I don't think the woman should be judged for living the the projects for 60 years, nothing wrong with that. she deserves respect in my opinion, i don't know her struggles.

I have been in this similar environment (projects) and you have to realize that most of these guys are just talking about all they've known and are really not bragging. They haven't connected to tangible opportunity and hope outside of what they are born into and live everyday. If you watch through the lenses of humanity, it'll break your heart more than cause you to criticize what they are doing. Its up to people like me and others who have been here but had the divine intervention to identify opportunity and grab that opportunity, which got me (us) out. If we laugh at the ones who really don't know any better, are we any better?
This is the realest comment, but unfortunately this will not resonate with the average commenter.

I became so weary, watching the video.
The housing and living conditions are set up like some old outdated prisons blocks. The surrounding environment and atmosphere spoke of pain, poverty, destruction and death. I am not classifying every individual as so , because there are good, hard working, caring and loving people there, in the midst of Watts projects.

Grown men standing outside.. all day.. all night too.. I'd be depressed af in just a few days😥
That's why they smoke js all day. Nothing to do but smoke.
Great observations about grown men... the scary thing for me is that many are dads and grandads who serve as role models. Kid: " My dad rides a skateboard and slings schiff....got lots of cheese...."
Hah Hah by loitering and hanging out standing at corners its their idea of the great outdoors . They go hunting and fishing too except its not at the rivers edge and their pray are not deer but two legged hoodies and mostly victims in their own backyards or doorsteps

Keep doing what you're doing. What I like about what you're doing is, it gives people a chance to hear from people that they wouldn't normally hear from. I have family that used to live around there. And was always told to stay away for there; and I don't associate with anything.
Thanks, Mom & Dad, for keeping us out of housing projects. Damn!

They look like such fools doing that
@Darnell Mack honestly some our older generations dont want to leave
One thing I admire is the fact that there seems to be a sense of community. Everyone seems to know one another. If I walked you around my neighborhood, it would consist of my immediate neighbors and thats it. And even thats a stretch
First, I’m in love with the accents-they still sound so Southern, which I didn’t realize still existed with many Blk folks in Cali since many of us are 3-4 generations removed from the South.
Second, these PJs seem sooo calm compared to back in the late 80s/90s and early 2000s.
Third, a lot of wisdom in this video, but I just wish that they could pull all of that wisdom together & make a change especially for the youth. Otherwise, they’ll continue to grow generation after generation in that “hood” mentality & environment. All that money they flashed can easily be pulled together to start an LLC, saved for a down payment on a home in the South, start a scholarship fund for kids to go to a trade school or something else, start a program where they take kids to visit the South to rediscover their roots, they literally could do so much if they came together.

Why do anything when your bills get paid for you? That’s the mentality that guy probably has. That’s also why our system is so fucked up, because people know they can live their entire lives off of it. Then their kids do the same and so on. These people say they hate it, but really they love it, they are absolutely content with not doing anything.

I have never had an issue and maybe its luck, but I treat everyone the same and keep it real. Much love and peace to all in and out of the projects. ✌❤
Same here. I'm a delivery driver and got lost a few times in Hunter's Point and also the Sunnydale projects in SF. Both times people were cool as fuck! It helped that I went to school with some of those people but the people there never once made me feel uncomfortable

Only the strong survive. The military ain't for everyone though. Thankfully you made it through the military, but surely you lost friends, probably on the same mission as you. As well as I'm sure you know someone from your projects that made a life for themselves from the dirt too. Some people get cut short before they even see outside of there own hood. Life is cold like that sometimes. All we can do is be thankful for the life in our own veins. Gods plan is different for each person, and some won't ever leave and it's out of their hands.
I think some people just want to be stuck with that mentality
I RESPECT your intelligence !
I was not in the projects, but the military is a way out and has PLENTY of benefits that you can use to make yourself very successful !

Shout out to HoodVlogs for documenting all this..
its sad to see but this is the REALITY of many of our brothers and sisters, i hope we are able to rise up above this. too many intelligent, charismatic, well spoke people out here to be standing around drinking and smoking all day - making no real use of themselves.
I’m here listening and practice my English language 😂 I went around these neighborhoods in the 90’s . Everyone stay safe & bendiciones🎉 from the Sonoran desert 🌵 Mexico 🇲🇽
When I was young and dumb, I dated a guy from the projects, we met at El Camino college, he didn't appear to be hood at first but after I got to know him, I had to ditch him FAST. He told me that guys in those projects ran trains on the girls while growing up, a homie would fake like he wanted to be with a girl, he would hit a few times then ask her to let his buddy hit, then another guy would come, long story short he said a lot of their victims ended up being prostitutes on Figueroa street. I am greatful that he told me that because I left him so fast like the trash that he is, he is a disgusting human being. He didn't sound remorseful telling me about it. Crazy!
When I start at elco you wouldn't see people like that then little by little people like that started to attend there. Messing up the vibe of that school

Dont understand how people in the Projects brag on how much money you got when nobody pays more than what 200 to 400 a month in bills.....
👌
If you travelled the world you would meet many people that also have never left their "hood". It's more common then you think. So yeah, in many cases travel increases a persons opportunity and knowledge, but that's not always the case. What most people don't understand is that for African-Americans, and Hispanics, the projects communal feel is indicative of tribal living.
but like you said.."ONCE" you left. Most people just can't. I've seen it. I was almost stuck myself.
Instead of talking shit, I started reaching back and bringing other people with me.
Out of about..maybe 300 people that I reached back for, I'd say about 60-70% kept their lives positive. About 60% did what you did...learn to live OUT of the projects. But that was thanks to the help I and a few others like me gave.
there are some people who are just flies in a jar. Trapped. Once they hit their head so many times, even when the top is finally off, they're too afraid to explore anything else.
And to be real, there's nothing wrong with just being where you are. What's wrong is never making it a better place to be
Easy to judge when you’re not walking in their shoes.
I’m not judging but I can’t see myself settling for that lifestyle while raising my son. Life is about moving up and doing better than your parents and not living the same life as them.

This is the result of disproportionately high rates of absentee fathers. A never ending cycle of fuckery.
Look no further than the democrat party. Democrat politicians have purposely kept blacks down for over 170 years. It started with democrat slave owners in the south, democrat led KKK (look it up, KKK was all white democrats and sponsored by the democrat party), Jim Crow Laws after reconstruction - again a democrat led policy. Then came the Civil Rights Act of 1964, all heavily opposed by democrats since it empowered the black community. Then the racist democrat LBJ who wanted to ensure power for the democrat party was quoted as saying:
“...These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down....”
This is what started democrat tactic of “hand outs for votes” that started in the 60s. So yeah, they should have animosity towards white people, democrat white politicians that have been keeping them in the projects and exploiting them for votes for decades. It’s a sad reality.
@@Primusux you're acting like Nixon and Reagan didn't start a drug war and didn't plant drugs in black communities just to arrest them
berry That’s the most irresponsible claim I’ve ever heard. So yeah, I’m acting like they didn’t. Because it’s not true. But even if it was, you can’t deny the irrefutable historical evidence that democrat politicians are largely to blame. Wake up.
@Primus you are correct! And AS A WOMAN OF COLOR... I will tell you and anyone else who wants to open their mind... DEMOCRATS HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Yes. I said it. True facts!
We been supporting these racist evil fools for the longest and when asked why... we can’t give definitive answers... we are brainwashed to vote for these DEVILS!
Well listen up my people- RESEARCH!!! Do YOUR HOMEWORK! The information is out there. Public housing was designed for us to he contained! The white man isn’t keeping us down! WE ARE! WE ARE OUR WORST ENEMIES AND BELIEVE THAT. The Devil Democrats are pushing an anti police agenda on us and it’s FALSE! We need to teach our kids RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY. PERIOD. Black lives matter 😂😂 what a pandering JOKE! Pleaseeeee😂😂 Trump doesn’t hate blacks. His policies HELP US! Research Joe Biden. RESEARCH HIS POLICIES! I was a lifelong Democrat but I aint no more. No more DEVIL DEMOCRATS! They hate us. Fam we need to get off the DEMOCRAT PLANTATION! I did.
K S Holy Cow! This is the most refreshing thing I’ve read in a while. May God Bless You! And yes, I couldn’t agree more that Trump is actually our 1st black president. Unemployment, especially black unemployment was at historic lows. That is, until COVID come along and the democrats not letting a good crisis go to waste decided to destroy the economy. He will get re-elected. If he doesn’t, it’s the end of any glimmer of hope this country has left.
Grape St has a black clique and a Hispanic clique. This dynamic makes this hood/ barrio unique in Los Angeles.
Love and respect my brother's stay strong from Australia 🇦🇺 D love your channel guys Spitting Truth God bless

The city done tore down like half of Jordan downs now with a new development with a shopping center. Watts is finally turning a corner a lil bit!
Notice how the bars along the top of the fence are designed to keep them in rather than others out! Bruh, study the history and design of the projects... Prison development on purpose.
I did notice that, those inward facing points on the fence. If that was unintentional, it really doesn't send a great message lol.
It’s a trap! So the police can have a easier job if they have to chase somebody up in there. Less escape routes.
Deep. I didn't see that but the wall alone was disturbing enough.
Goodie mob said that
All over Los Angeles they have those in all apartments and projects that are high crime areas. So if a pursuit happens cops can trap them in
19:14 was my favorite part of this video. That man had some much he wanted to do for the youth and make sure a lot of paths out of there were available to those who wanted them. That’s real OG mindset. And the fact that he was smoking his blunt during his spiel just makes him look like he’s not trying to hide anything and makes me respect him and his goals even more 🤙🏽
aaron johnson I was thinking the exact same
I went to audio school with him 10 years ago. He was a super cool/smart dude. Always super nice to me. A corny white boy from the NW lol.
Yes it was actually very touching. A lot of those guys are very smart and ambitious. It's a shame the routes some end up taking.

@@doggeorge1196 Yeah and in the projects when you are part of that lifestyle that gang lifestyle there is no such thing as up and moving out like that. I think the music video of We're all in the Same Gang (1990) by the West Coast All Stars was filmed at Jordan Downs?. Plus I think some scenes from Menance ii Society (1993) was filmed at Jordan Downs as well.
Worked for a contractor that remodeled the downs, we had to hire local helpers from the neighborhood per city contract, homeboy showed up at 630 in the morning and said yeah I cant work here I have beef with the grapes. Lol 😂 he knew the value of his life
