    On accessiblity, Straf Venture uttering the line "I wonder if she'll scream my name or yours" is the most light handed way of conveying one of the most fucked up sentiments I've ever read. The amount of work just that one line does to set the tone of the series and define Straf as a character, without ever delving into gratuitous description, is astonishing.

    Mistborn wasn't my gatewaydrug into Fantasy, that was Eye of the World, when I read it in 1995. The Wheel of Time was also how I got to know Brandon Sanderson. I read the 3 main Mistborn books 1½ year ago, and loved them. I read Brandons annotations on his blog at the same time (so inspiring!) and that became my gatewaydrug into actually starting to write my own novel, which I now have 50k words of :) (sci fi though, and in my own native language, but thats beside the point) I owe alot to Brandon, the Writing Excuses podcast, his fantasy masterclass here on YT and the brilliant writing he has done for both Mistborn and the last three WoT books. I am going to throw myself at The Stormlight Archives soon.

    I just did a trend search for the word fantasy to see how that coincides with HP and Mistborn. It's basically the same tho it was slightly higher after Mistborn. Now I know this doesn't mean that those exact books are responsible for that spike but I'm willing to bet they are.
    Also it's worth noting that Mistborn was published exactly between 2 consecutive HP books.

    I also think Mistborn has a very unique protagonist. A lot of fantasy protagonists tend to fall into the Harry Potter format of very heroic and also somewhat boring. But Vin struggles with mental health issues and is extremely complex but also does not come across as whiny to the reader, and a lot of her personal struggles (whether it's learning to trust and love people or her struggle with her femininity) are just fascinating to read because I've not really seen them done much in fantasy (at least before Mistborn, it's a bit more common now).

      Yeah he must do it somewhere just to stretch that muscle but I would imagine i would have to be outside of the Cosmere so as to not break the system in play. Though too an extent the Spiritual Realm is Soft magic. We know very little about it and its interplay with the different hard magic systems in the Cosmere. Maybe he will effectively develop it so it can fit this hole. Currently I think it is a soft magic but it is so in the background and unused it is hard to say if it should count at all.

    While Mistborn was not the series to get me into fantasy, it was the one that pulled me out of "the classics." and rekindled my love of reading as a whole. While in my head during the first book i was telling myself "okay i'll stop and do something else after this," I went on to do nothing of the sort. Again with the third book. Now i'm Mistborn era 1, Way of Kings, Elantris, Snapshot and both Skyward books down and seriously considering picking up Warbreaker off of my shelf. I met Sanderson in London 6 or so years back now to get my copy of Final Empire signed. Very down to Earth but it completely skipped my mind to ask him how you pronounce Sazed lol.

    Mistborn was like a 2nd introduction to Fantasy books for me. I certainly grew up playing Fantasy Games, and I'd read Skulduggery Pleasant, Witcher and Game of Thrones. But when I was recommended Mistborn and tried it, I suddenly wanted everything by Brandon Sanderson because I loved the writing style. So I read all of Mistborn, Elantris, Arcanum Unbounded. I'm currently reading Stormlight Archives and have plans to read both The First Law Trilogy, Wheel of Time and Powder Mage as previously recommended by you. It was a total eye opener all started by Mistborn

    Mistborn was my second Sanderson read. I was introduced to him through his completion of the Wheel of Time. He did so well with that that I was interested to see what he did on his own. After finishing the Mistborn series, I was clamoring to find something else written by Sanderson. Enter The Way of Kings and I'm hooked. Now, I'm in the middle of my third Mistborn reread directly after my second Stormlight Archive reread (had to refresh myself for Rhythm of War) and it's amazing how much Sanderson has matured as a writer. While Mistborn will always be one of my favorite stories, it lacks the depth and emotional gut-punch that seems to be so common with the Stormlight Archive.

      @@noname3609 Wheel of Time is completely different because it was mostly written by a different author. Robert Jordan started the series and died before he could complete the series. His widow hired Brandon Sanderson to complete the last couple of books. You can definitely tell where in the series a new author picks up, but from what I understand, most of the story was at least outlined before Sanderson picked it up. It's definitely worth a read as Jordan was a great author as well. Since it sits outside the Mistborn/Stormlight universe, it doesn't have anything to do with those stories and could be read at any time.

I blasted right through the series, Wax and wayne, discovered stormlight archive and went on to read: Powdermage, Dark Elf Trilogy (Drizzt), The Black Prism, The Last Wish, Stormfront, Kings of the Wyld, Rage of Dragons, and several others that I have started but not finished like Lies of Locke Lamora. My only regret while reading the cosmere is not starting with Mistborn. I started with Stormlight Archive, and while it is admittedly a more professionally done series, just because Brandon Sanderon had a lot more experience under his belt while writing it, Mustborn had introduced so many more mechanics to the cosmere that I am still waiting for in the Stormlight Archive. Ever since reading it I've understood what is occurring in every cosmere book I've read so far with much greater depth.

    So, I'm a writer. Specifically, a grad student at OU who doesn't want to publish anything quite yet, save a couple short stories.
    My thoughts on Mistborn's legacy are overall positive. I agree that Sanderson popularizing hard magic is, overall, a good thing.
    And I am a much bigger fan of hard magic systems too. But I'm not a big fan of Mistborn. I'm trying really hard to get through the series as a writer because I agree it is a cornerstone of modern fantasy and it has some great writing in it. Still, the books are not turning me into a fan.
    So... what's my gripe?
    I feel that the hard magic in Mistborn has been more contradictory in tone rather than contrast in tone. Let me explain that a bit. Let's use an example: I feel like a hard magic system in Game of Thrones would be a compliment to tone. You would know what magic does, and you know when it will not help a character get out of a tight spot. In a story like GoT, having a hard magic system could really ratchet up the stakes and put a reader on the edge of their seat. Because the character deaths dolled out by the author were capricious and near-random, having magic that has known limits could really build up the stakes.
    Hopefully you're following that with me. So that's a hard magic system complementing a story's tone. What is a good contrast? I'd argue a good contrast would be the softer magic Got had really slapped, given the tone. There were times when the magic system seemed to be a cop-out. Like character death being reversed in such a grim story. But I'd also argue that death reversal didn't lack a thematical quality. It did contrast parts of the tone, but it fit overall. (Gonna put a disclaimer here that I'm not a big GoT fan either but the series is a great study in thematic consistency.) So, to say outside the disclaimer, having softer rules like those around Daenerys Targaryen made the reader wonder if she'd have powers and if her brother would have powers too. The discovery and wonder there really worked.
    Now onto the meat of the argument. How does Mistborn lack this quality? Well, you can skip the action scenes and not lose anything.
    I know because I often do. Or at least I zone out. I get distracted and look for what's boring me out of my mind.
    The stakes of fights are most often life or death. And in a story like Mistborn where all the death has to be martyrdom or the end of a side character--no conflict in the story has any teeth. You can look at how far you are into a book and know that any confrontation is toothless because we haven't gotten to the dark moment yet. So, while the magic system is harder than a diamond, the rules of conflict are baby kitten soft.
    I mentioned I'm a writer not to promote myself. And I'm not about to plug my stories (unless you wanna talk about a discussion with a no-name staving artist *wink wink*). No, I'm not here to promote myself. I mention I'm a writer, and a grad student because my life has been put into the study of story mechanics. I've seen how the magic works behind the curtain, and sometimes that makes a story all the better for me to read. I'm in this line of work because I love stories. Though stories that rely way too much on the fundamentals tend to fall a little flat for me.
    I know hard magic can be a great remedy for that. I have no doubts that the stories I love which have harder magic were likely inspired in part by Sanderson.
    So again, much love to him.
    But I don't know how well Mistborn really did to take full advantage of the hard magic system Sanderson made. I'm looking forward to getting to the later books which I've been told really slap.
    (Side note: it's my job to use new slang poorly until it dies, so the old slang can once again rule the empire of words.)

    Could not care less about hard or soft magic systems, what pulled me into The Final Empire was the concept of the baddie winning, the heist and the characters. I appreciate a well executed magic system and magic battles are fun but they're just flavour to me unless they go the LOTR or WoT route and directly influence character. I come to fantasy for the alternate universe, the concepts and the characters.

      @Trisjack20 4 года назад +1

      Great comment and I think Sanderson hits on all of those his word building and concepts are SO good. I love how in the books you can walk outside and just by describing the food, the weather or the street I can know which of Sanderson's worlds I am on. Love the idea of the hero failing and the baddie winning and the world NOT ending. Instead he sets up a not very nice Empire but one that works and stands the test of time. Not just if I win I will blow everything up (Evil laugh).

  • @TheJadedJames
    @TheJadedJames 4 года назад +1

    I think you are spot on about Mistborn strikes a perfect balance that makes it accessible and engaging for many different kinds of audiences at once without ever feeling watered down. For me at least, a hard magic system like in Mistorb or Avatar The Last Airbender isn't really about stakes so much as it is interesting to learn about and think about. Especially in a system where not everyone has the same powers. There is certainly more weight to clever use of the rules in the text, and the ways they get expanded in the Wax and Wayne books. But while such a strict system works for a fantasy book about assassins, it would make telling Harry Potter difficult. At least for me personally, fantasy elements in stories don't have to work to painstaking build logic insofar as they have to not break it. In Star Wars, I don't need a chart explaining the only 16 Force abilities that can possibly exist, but the more the story bends for convenience the more I'll be forced to ask "Why didn't Y do X before?" I think my earliest example of just being taken out of a story by his is hilariously ... Dragonball Z for its out of control power creep where there are eventually 1000 dudes more powerful than the guy who could blow up a planet with his pinky so now nothing means anything in this world.

    I've always found Mistborn a weird book to recommend.
    I love the Cosmere (currently on re-read/listen 4 of WoR) but I always hesitated about which book/series to get people in on. Stormlight is very long and has one of the most staggered beginnings I've ever read. Elantris is good but slow (IMO due to the partially forced triad system). Warbreaker is possibly a good choice but its a part of 1 of 2 where the second book hasn't been written yet (Gif meh Nightblood plz!). White Sand and the short stories are interesting but only really for those who like the Cosmere and want to find more of the secrets. So we're left with Mistborn.
    Mistborn was my first cosmere and I read through the first book in a frenzy but then stagnated on the second one (iirc i actually went off and read tWoK and WoR before realising it was all one cosmere and came back to finish it). At the time I don't think there was any particular reason why I dropped WoA, I just kinda did. So Era 1 has always a weird place in my head (not Era 2, that's the real good stuff). Mistborn feels a little depressing to read: everything is ash, God either hates you or just doesn't care and men with metal eyes want to kill you. But the character's never felt depressed (partly that was just Kelsier doing #kelsierthings) so it always felt like a weird clash. So Mistborn took up this place in my head as a really well written, good story but I could never bring myself to feel the same way about it that I did about Stormlight or Era 2.
