How Maduro Has Clung Onto Power In Venezuela (HBO)

  • Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has had a tumultuous 2019.
He's been locked in a power struggle with 35-year-old Juan Guaidó since January, when the young opposition leader declared himself Venezuela’s rightful interim president with the backing of 50 countries, including the U.S. He's faced several rounds of sanctions that have crippled the country’s oil sector and sharply exacerbated an already disastrous crisis, making an economic recovery all but impossible any time soon. He's overseen one massive power outage after another, leaving entire neighborhoods without running water for days or even weeks at a time.
In spite of all this, Maduro has managed to hang on to power. He’s done so in part by maintaining control of key political institutions, especially the military, through a combination of patronage and intimidation. But he also counts on a hard core of support among the population, which has less to do with Maduro himself than with the legacy of the man who was president before him: Hugo Chávez.
Over his 15 years in power, Chávez became a national hero of near-mythic proportions by lifting millions out of poverty: He reduced hunger and extreme poverty by half, nearly wiped out illiteracy, and transformed Venezuela's barrios by supplying them with proper housing and basic goods and services, organizing them politically in the process. And while the catastrophic economic breakdown Venezuela is currently suffering has badly weathered support for Maduro among the poor, many still have faith in the larger chavista project, and don’t see the U.S.-led opposition as a viable alternative.
“Yes, people are disappointed, but even though they’re disappointed, they’re not with the opposition - they’re passive,” said Olga Andrade, a resident of a Caracas barrio. “Because what exactly does the opposition have to offer? How long have they been fighting for this or that, and what have they accomplished? They haven’t done anything.”

This is all a result of the US sanctions. The world reserve currency is the dollar so if the US sanctions you you're DONE! US is did/is doing the same thing they did in Lybia, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Venezuela. Look up "petrodollar", what the media doesn't tell is that oil was almost always sold in dollars. This gave the US a huge advantage in the world. All of these countries share one thing, they all came off of the petrodollar and attempted to nationalize they're oil industry and push out western corporations. The US did the same thing in Iran in the 50s, they overthrew, using a CIA coup, the democratically elected president Mohammed Mossadegh and installed a dictator. Hows that for spreading liberty!

There is a bigger issue. Cubans have been exporting their ideas to Latin American countries. Trying to set up totalitarian dictatorships. Allowing US enemies to come into 'our backyard'. Constantly attacking(verbally) the US.
If you go against the US we will bring some democracy to your door. We will stop allowing you to use our dollar and if all you do is keep attacking the US while being incompetent to run a country then we will set up sanctions.

I don't know if it would. Part of the problem is the massive mismanagement of the revenue they earned from the oil and widespread corruption. Also factor in the price of oil is a lot less than it used to be and that they've allowed the oil infrastructure to collapse then I don't think lifting sanctions would do a great deal right now.

@@Lobos222 It actually means something, bud - it means "The only way to move forward as a country is to advance in our efforts" - that obviously means something. It's not a tautology. It's a stark statement of intent. In a military context (which I'm not sure the speaker meant it, but it certainly comes off as) it makes even more sense, "The only way for this situation to improve is to advance our forces" - meaning that it is preferable to advance over standing still. Think of a beach assault - one's back is against the sea, the only hope is to advance up the beach towards the shore. Such a military context is not the purpose of the speaker but the analogy is roughly the same, minus the militaristic trappings.

In Venezuela we are about 30Million inhabitants, 20Millions vote, Chavismo resolved to defend the Plan of the Bolivarian Socialist Homeland we add about 8Million, the opposition does not reach 7Million among all 6 parties named, but each with its own candidate. The popular classes most benefited by the social policies of the state are the most vulnerable and the middle-upper class social classes support the opposition or reject chavismo. In Venezuela there is a class struggle that has been resolved with the strength of DEMOCRATIC VOTE. Our economic crisis would be solved without the interference and continuous sabotage of the United States regime. We are determined to remain free and sovereign. We will not surrender because of hunger, nor because of fear, nor because of tiredness, and less because of false propaganda and false promises of the genocidal empire of the United States. If they bombard us, we will multiply with more strength in numbers, in votes and in friends, because we would be joined by other free and sovereign countries in defense of the largest oil and gold reserves in the world. It would start a 3rd world war. Are you willing to live with it in your consciousness?

@@luisvillalobos8962 The USA did claim de facto power in Japan after 1945. They literally occupied it. Douglas MacArthur, the American general who was largely responsible for defeating Japan, became so powerful that he was jokingly referred to "Emperor of Japan" in place of Emperor Hirohito, for whom US advisers wrote a "declaration of humanity": basically a declaration stating that he was not a divine, supreme ruler but just a mortal human being. Not to mention the influence that America had on Japan's economy and political system (basically "rebuilding" it as an American colony), there were also thousands of US troops stationed in Japan (there still are 50,000 as of today, nearly 20% of Japan's total armed forces). This occupation lasted until 1952, during which some aspects of Japanese society significantly worsened.
From Wikipedia: "[During the US occupation] [a]lcohol and drug abuse became major problems. Deep exhaustion, declining morale and despair were so widespread that it was termed the "kyodatsu condition" (虚脱状態 _kyodatsujoutai_, lit. "state of lethargy"). Inflation was rampant and many people turned to the black market for even the most basic goods. These black markets in turn were often places of turf wars between rival gangs, like the Shibuya incident in 1946. Prostitution also increased considerably."
      Even worse than Venezuela TBHIMO.
As for Israel I'm not sure what your point is. America did not "democratise" Israel; they helped to build it and now supply it with money and weapons to massacre Palestinians (and ironically also suffer terrorist attacks in return).
As for "sucking resources" I suppose it's a question of who you want your country's resources to be sucked by. USA will not be better than Cuba or Russia, because by the time Venezuela has collapsed the US oil companies will probably pay even less for your oil.

I'm Venezuelan, and I got to say that our population has lost 40 pound of weight in average in the last 3 years. 10% of the population has left the country. There are not even antibiotics on any pharmacy, people are killed while waiting 3 days on lines to get a gas tank filled. There's no hospital attention, 79% of the new born in Venezuela don't have access to vaccines. My family is still living in San Cristobal, a city at the Colombian border in Venezuela, they're now living with blackouts 12 hours a day, they only have running water a couple of hours a day, and once a week they go several days with no water at all. Venezuela was the richest country in Latin America. For more than a decade Hugo Chavez had all power in his hands, both popular, economic, military and political power, and just like Maduro, left-wing politics slowly turned Venezuela into a place where nobody wants to work because the government pays for everything, from education, to electricity, housing, gasoline, cars, computers, the government gave everything you might ever need for a period of ten years. After that even the biggest oil reservoirs in the world cannot satisfy tens of millions of non-producing citizens. Chavez nationalized around 85% of the private companies, and 100% of all those companies are now either broke or producing less than 30% of its capacity before the nationalization. I'd estimate that 98% of all venezuelans love what Trump is doing for us. Calling Maduro's regime a dictatorship, since he went to elections without the opposing politic side, has applied sanctions, and above all he's a true Right-wing politician, exactly what we now understand is the only way to go for humanity to have a sustainable future.

dominic k Nope. I lost my car and everything I ever had there. I left Venezuela for the US and now I own a very successful company in nanotechnology. Abrams ran terrorist operations in Nicaragua via the "Contras", and that's what he and Bolton have in mind for Venezuela- a long, bloody, U.S. backed war of attrition against Venezuela. But Venezuela isn't in the militarily weak position the Sandinistas faced. It just won't work this time. Incidentally, it's become obvious that after the abysmal failure of the last coup attempt, Guaido has more value to the Trump administration dead than alive. If he should meet with an unfortunate accident, this would be seized on by Washington as a pretext for further escalation and aggression. For his own safety, I suggest Guaido be placed under protective custody by the government of Venezuela. As you value his life and leadership, I'm sure you'll agree.

@@POCLEE Well no, I mean like Deng Xiaoping Economically, meaning "don't make you're country poor", thank you for adding info I forgot to mention about like tianenmen square and the crushing of Chinese grassroots democracy. I believe in the pragmatic way, not the idealistic way because that produces only failed experiments. Even though I didn't like how Deng handled the protests, he is at least on par with Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. Suppressing opposition is sometimes used to ensure political & economic stability, but looking at "president for life" Xi, I don't think there isn't any spark that could reach the heights of Tianenmen square as China grows closer to a country ruled by a security apparatus (Singapore is way more liberal than China).
Back to Venezuela, it has been confirmed countless times that the statewide control aspects of economics (communism) has failed miserably both in improving human lives & continue technological progression, a very impractical way of managing a nation's economy. but I will not forget about the completely Laissez faire aspects of economics (neoliberalism) that failed to bridge closer the divide between classes and also cost the very same people of their lives through the exploitation of their resources and the oppression by the system. So I suggest a social democracy akin to Scandinavia that could adapt and syncretizes into Venezuelan society & culture and it is not a simple solution. In other words, I would hope other countries in Latin America just follow what Uruguay is doing, keeping in mind that its a different context because of geography, political & socioeconomic history, etc. They could at least try to be principled in the belief of a republic and of a democracy.

      Democracy is already flawed.
it is just inconceivably corrupt and vile to just get 1 good leader and then elect the next worst one continuing this cycle of chaos. reforming the political system is a must and if anyone can persuade the Generals, Civil Servants & Politicians (from Maduro's govt.) to oppose Maduro then there's a chance to set a new standard/status quo (transition govt., elections, etc.) , a govt. not obsessed with ideology or too stupid & arrogant in the management of certain economic realities. I vehemently oppose this dictator along with Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping, Trump, Salman, Netanyahu, Erdogan, Assad, and Putin but nothing in this world could be perfect. There is no exact model for a civil war. Every conflict is different. In Ukraine there is two main sides and there is actual battles in the country.
In Syria there is dozens of factions and there is endless battles.
In Democratic Republic of Congo it’s similar to Syria in that there multiple factions.
In Colombia there is a low level guerrilla war that has been going on for decades. Most of the country is stable and is not involved in a conflict but there are segments that are. The government was never at risk of being overthrown and it has American advisors on the ground fighting the drug war.
No two civil wars are the same. Every one of them is different. All that is happening is that the polarization between the two main factions is growing. No one is willing to cooperate and come to a resolution. The opposition doesn’t want Maduro in power.
I can envision two possibilities in Venezuela. A low level guerrilla insurgency against the government that will last for years.
A partition of the country in which the parts of the country that has the largest oil reserves will be fought ferociously. In Syria for example that is where the Syrian government Troops, pro Assad militias and Russian troops are eye ball to eye ball with the Kurds, the US troops and other Syrian guerrillas.
