Also, the Forerunners, while ancient and not willing to put up with stuff were by no means the most savage things in the galaxy (take a look at Ancient Humanity or, I dunno, the Precursors or the Flood).

You know, the Ur Didact really wasn't evil, in fact he was screwed over by the ones at the top, he was the key to making the Forerunner species strive and live on perfectly. The Master Builder and the Librarian are the ones to blame for the Forerunners extinction. Didact was building multiple shield worlds some reserved for certain rates. Same thing with the species alone, they were not power hungry NOR evil, if anything, they were back stabbed by the Precursors you see the Precursors were planning to kill off the Forerunners not only that give the Mantle to Humanity which obviously the Forerunners had found that and did what they had to in order to secure the Mantle from corruption and their extinction.
Oh, and he was driven to insanity during the war because of the Master Builder. So, it's not just him getting screwed over. It was him getting broken completely.
The Ur Didact was just butthurt that the Humans were getting the Mantle instead of the Forerunners. He committed mass genocide on precursors, nearly driving them into extinction. And the few that survived turned into the flood, killing millions more. Let’s also not forget that he started a war with humanity to steal the Mantle, killing even more in his temper tantrum. He tried preserving the Forerunners but mainly himself out of selfishness, the Librarian saw that and she wanted him to stop because by doing that he endangered the Forerunner race. This may age like milk, considering we're about to get more lore on the Xalanyn. It would appear the forerunners were incredibly power hungry, but that will be confirmed in future DLC for Halo Infinite. Either way I'm excited to see what's in store for the future of the lore in this amazing franchise.
In my opinion this is way better than the original. It does a much better a job at sucking you into the beginning and keeping you interested until the last note. So great.

Thats because he wasn't much of a "boss". He had great potential as an antagonist though, and he has a kickass theme to go with it.
