Fr. Guy is 96 and still going strong, his whole life is a flex. Taught at Harvard, became one of the best political satirists the U.S. has ever had, quit when he wanted, still loved by many today, and may reach 100. He's been kicking life's ass since '28.
LOVE this man!!! I was introduced to him by my 7th grade teacher. I am 69 now. He released his first album in Boston, in the mid fifties. 1000 copies. They were pulled from the shelves as "too subversive". I am thrilled to say I have one of them. What a treasure. Many of those songs are in this compilation. . God be with you and bless you, Tom. You have blessed so many with your talent.

@@cherrypichick6782 Borge and Lehrer were two towering father figures for modern musical comedy. They're both very funny. I really appreciate Tom's biting satire and sarcasm, much of which is still very relevant today. Even earlier, in the 1880s, I imagine Gilbert and Sullivan must have had their audiences ROFL. When I took my family to see a very well done performance of The Pirates of Penzance in 2022 my 29-year-old daughter could hardly stop giggling and bursting out laughing at the pompous portrayal of the Major-General, whose main tune Lehrer borrowed for his The Elements.

I checked it out and the old math looks largely like the kind of thing covered early on in computer science courses, kind of cool. Came with changes to the teaching method at the same time though that teachers didn't seem too well equipped for
I listened to Tom Lehrer when I was a preteen into my older teen years because my older brother who was a fan. Didn’t understand much of what he was singing about but as I got older I started to understand and appreciate his genius.
I found out about Tom Lehrer through TikTok, and this is one of the times that I am thankful for the app. If I didn't have TikTok installed I'm afraid I wouldn't have explored Tom Lehrer's work. Although I knew Masochism Tango, I didn't really bother looking for any of his other performances. Nonetheless, thank you for making this neatly collected compilation of his songs.
Ah...this brought another memory to me. Does anyone else remember a scene from the TV series "Chicago Hope", where Many Patinkin sings "Poisoning Pigeons in The Park"? That was hilarious!
In college one of my classmate's family was close friends with him. He composed some of his songs at their house (so claimed). He did some amazing songs that are still relevant today. Of course, now he'd get culture-canceled. Sigh. No one appreciates satire anymore.
@@topphatt1312 there are some jokes that might not go very smoothly today. He kind of kicks in all directions, so a sensitive person might take offense to some of his jokes.
@@ayakas-kh5mkBut the whole point is that because he "kicks in all directions" it shows that he isn't against any single group or religion. How can you object to somebody who's making fun not only of you but of somebody who isn't like you at all?
Well, sure. He was writing in the context of the times he was living in. An equivalent professor in 2024 wouldn't be writing about nuclear proliferation or segregation, they would be writing about climate change and people who commit micro-aggressions and getting rid of those f*cking pigeons. I guess some things never change.

While in high school in 1967 I bought his record “That was the Year that Was” (and still have the LP). Stumbled upon this video. Such joy!
About 10 years ago, I came upon A Night ^Wasted With Tom Lehrer in a thrift store. I snatched it up. 😂

most of his music still applies today! a comedic tune to serious topics will always live to be the best music.
So far ahead of his time !!
So brilliant and a magical etymologist
Where did the "Love Ballad" live video go?
The lyric video or the one of him performing it wearing a dark shirt? That video is a short, so check my shorts section (not videos)
