I love it when rich assholes try to give out light-hearted stories about their interactions with the public and it almost always turns out to be them antagonizing other people or generally being a menace. Like "my dad wasn't just a hate-filled man with a chip on his shoulder, he really knew how to laugh, like when he would drive his truck through people and deafen students with his fog horn"
Or throw dead animals that he probably killed into their vehicle! He just loved to laugh.
Public schools in Lynchburg didn't fully desegregate until 1970. Falwell Senior was a leader in the rearguard action which delayed desegregation for a decade and half. When federal enforcement was imminent the Massive Resistance campaign was launched. Among other things this resulted in public schools in half of Virginia shutting down for a full school year. The legacy of this has been a rate of illiteracy 1.2% higher among students from those school districts born between 1942 and 1952 compared to those in school districts which weren't closed for the 1959 year.
It has been referred to as the Lost Class of '59

I feel that if trump won, Falwell could have been rehabilitated in the evangelical movements eyes. Trump's whole era was about doing whatever you want and failing upwards to these people, being among God's elect. Then Biden comes and solidifies that the good times are over, accept this death gracefully. Read a piece by a Christian columnist that basically said Falwell Jr was trash but it's OK because he was never a TRUE Christian, by his own words. Tried to hand wave it all away by saying he was never one of them, so his misdeeds don't reflect on the evangelical community at all.
So he was no true Scotsman, after all.

The wild thing about the Dune reference about halfway through is that in all of Frank Herbert's Dune books there's only one religion we encounter that's just straight up a modern-day religion, rather than some mix of Abrahamic and Dharmic traditions. And that's Judaism. Judaism is the Dune equivalent of the Earth King's Normal Bear in Avatar.

I really don't understand what his angle even was. Like, no one was going to actually judge him for this. Unless that rape allegation goes somewhere, he's basically a non-entity here.
This is really a peak case of the kind of erosion of Christianity that capitalism, especially capitalism plus American Exceptionalism and white supremacy produces. A faith that's completely nominal, completely superficial, "miles wide and inches deep" as the old accusation from the 1980s goes. A faith that has to be completely cossetted and flattered by the so-called prosperity gospel and the most high tech and professional musicians and sound systems that mega-churches can afford to retain their attention, and that only manages to summon up any passion or enthusiasm when railing at real "old-timey" churches that haven't fallen into complete self-indulgent anti-nomianism like the Amish and Mennonites. Obviously there are still real Christians out there, noticably on the left including anti-capitalists who see the Mammonolatry, but they're fighting the tide, the coastal erosion by capital. And no one wins out this but capital itself in its ever extending domination of human beings and human consciousness.
White American Evangelicalism is a mixture of Capitalism, Nationalism, and White Supremacy that has very little to do with anything Jesus taught in the Four Gospels.
@@jeffweskamp3685 True. There's a high degree of cherrypicking of verses, and the absence of formal liturgy and lectionary means preachers being incredibly repetitive with very few messages. And of course the so-called prosperity gospel is just rebranded Tony Robbins style success guru shit. Anglican, Catholic and Lutheran liturgies involve a bunch of scripture in themselves, plus a rotation of the Psalms through the year, and lectionaries bring up readings from throughout scripture over a two year cycle. My experience of evangelical churches is that its always the same subjects and the same songs, and an incredibly reductionist treatment of the gospel as just the doctrine of salvation by faith, which lends itself to exactly the kind of do-what-you-like mentality of JF jr.
