- Researchers at the University of California San Diego have figured out how to turn algae into flip flops. They founded a startup to sell the shoe, but face a challenge in getting their invention mass produced: There aren't enough algae farms to support the startup's supply chain.

Build your own flip Flops. Its Not that Hard. Leather, cotton etc, it all works.
@@JasonDBike Not a bad notion but inexperienced people crafting products themselves isn't all that effective: purchasing smaller quantities of goods often costs more in comparison to larger badges: I for instance can't imagine being able to purchase a leather patch small enough for my operation, not to mention costs. This way you on one side, rely on the leather industry, while also waste a lot of resoirces by default, not to mention failed attempts: these sloppy slippers might be bio-degradable but not at all sustainable.
I am a handy person and hand-craft a lot of things but only, if it makes sense to do so. I agree with your notion but don't believe that your suggestion is a feasable alternative here.

I currently pay $50 for my sandals that last about 3 years with heavy wear. If they could come close to that, id totally switch.

I think a good practical question here would be: how do I demand products that aren't being made in an effective way?
Not purchasing plastic flip-flops would be a good start
Not buying things that aren't eco friendly is great in theory. You know "talk with you're money". However it's unrealistic for most people. Most people can't or don't want to just stop using things that are convenient for them or buy a more expensive eco friendly version. Something you can do instead though is to email, call, etc companies that you buy a lot from and request a more eco friendly version. Companies don't know there's a demand unless we tell them. You can also buy second hand. It's a slightly more convenient way of talking with your money. If you're not buying it from a retailer then that company doesn't see your purchase and take that as another number to make more. You can also talk to your local government about having policies put in place that force companies to be more eco conscious if you're really dedicated. Watching environmental awareness youtube channels should give you some more ideas as well. One I really like is Shelbizzle. She has some really good tips and an environmental degree to back up what she says. Hope that helps 😊
The question is aimed for those who may need flip flops, and have only the "bad" kind available to them. There's not a very easy channel to demand something new for most people on the planet. I wasn't sure if there was a nuance to this other than calling different companies or local governments. I get the feeling that this method falls on deaf ears.
@@katelynwoodworth9989 I am afraid the most the average joe can contribute right now is being more concious about their own purchases: here in Germany a large portion of the population takes the climate crisis seriously and to name one example, I'm slowly seeing packs of 4 metal straws with a brush replace the old '100 plastic ones' pack. It might seem less effective than directly having a say in politics but a general shift in consumer culture can work wonders: you can force people to change their behaviour but the transition is just much easier if they do so out of personal realisation
I guess the best viable solution here is to reuse, I remember when I was young I would buy something and repair them and reuse them to it's max, but now, if my flip-flops are a little dirty or if my bag lost a zip I buy new ones, which makes it worse
This man needs an award and the people who helped 👏

Cool product. I thought algae are the slipperiest things. Have you ever tried to walk on a rock that has algae growing on it?
Uncooked algae. Removing water removes slippy.
@Samriddhi Pal Water reduces the friction between your shoe and the ground, no matter what the shoe is made of. Flips flops, however, aren’t designed to be athletic or high performance, they just need to keep your feet off the ground which is why algae based foam that is biodegradable is a step in the right direction.
@@meoff7602 Yeah that's like saying "Have you ever tried to walk on rock coated in petrol liquid?"
@@froilanflorentino1252 Can you remove the liquid from oil?
@@meoff7602 Solid, liquid, and gas are just phases of matter. Rather than removing, "changing" the properties of a substance causes the substance to change it's phase. For example, the process of hydrogenation to solidify an oil based ingredient to make a last longer dish.
