- A clinical research publication led by Stanford University investigators has demonstrated that a brain-to-computer hookup can enable people with paralysis to type via direct brain control at the highest speeds and accuracy levels reported to date.

Great work by Prof. Henderson. I've been active in BCI research almost 30 years (Brendan Allison, UCSD). I was not involved in this work but will reply to some questions accordingly. (1) Why not use Qwerty? Among other reasons, that keyboard layout was designed to be slow. Lots of BCI spellers explore different layouts and few use qwerty. Also, the distance from the center of the screen to the target is a big deal. (2) Why not use gaze control? Because many patients lose reliable control of gaze.
cant she simply use the tobi eye tracker shes moving her eyes to look at the letters it would do the same thing and she wont need a pipe sticking out of her brain

What's with the keyboard layout? Any reason they aren't using a standard qwerty design?
The circle diagram should be more accurate because of distance between letters. Maybe some mechanics - moving the cursor by diagonal line should trigger a kind behavior of interface.
It's about efficiency, they have the most used letters focused in easy access areas. While letters that aren't as widely used are further away. Also a typical key board is wider than it is tall, if using a mouse it is faster to have square shape then a rectangle as you can get from any one side on the square to another faster than your can on average versus a rectangle.

MEdLife yep invasive surgery though? There has to be an easier way than that? Some of these patients might also not survive the surgery itself.... even at optimum there would be casualties and even one of those would spell disaster.
What's wrong with an external wearable? or at least is there a clear benefit to direct interfacing? Does it give a bidirectional prospect to the tech maybe?

We're currently researching many types of non-invasive BCI systems that requires no surgery whatsoever. However, the downside is that the electrode-to-skin electrical impedance used in electroencephalography is absolutely horrendous with current tech, and even worse for dry electrodes that doesn't require any electrode paste or gel. This means low signal-to-noise ratios, which makes it hard to pick up on these event-related (de-) synchronization events that are used in the system in the video.
Also, this BCI is most likely using Machine Learning to classify the motor imaginary potentials, yes.
xLuffe It's a real pity there isn't some other way of accessing the motor parts of the brain than through bone. Do the signals even get as far as say the spinal cord? Sorry brain biology is not my thing so clearly I'm using what I know. But I can't see medical authorisation being easy if this means drilling through someone's cranium.
