Thank you so much for this quick and easy tutorial. Living in the Netherlands and decided to make some adjustments to the backyard in order to have enough space to grow some silver queen corn (about 40 stalks) the way my late husband did in the US. My sons and I cannot wait, since the store corn is not very good. The tassels are starting to emerge as well as the ears. So excited!!
Hello, Anja first let me say I am sorry for such an extremely delayed response.. Secondly, 40 stalks are very nice..I am sure that they couldn't wait. that is a really smart way to pollinate all the other videos simply say take and pull the little beads off and throw them onto the silk but i like your way much better and this is my first year actually growing corn so im glad i ran across your video
Please excuse the very very very late response. Thank you very much... oh ok.... Yes for me this is an easier and faster way to hand pollinate. It is more of a guarantee of healthy full individual ears of corn. Congrats on adding corn to your garden. How was your harvest? HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!!!
Great video! I'm growing corn for the first time and its doing great. I learned that the silk is the female and will become the kernels of corn. Thanks!
Hello and thank you... Please excuse the very late response.. Congrats on adding corn to your garden... So tell me how did your season go? HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!!
Great video. Very informative, quick and to the point. Plus I see your corn looks healthy and doing well. This is my second year planting corn. Last year wasn't great but now I know to plant in block instead of long rows. Thanks again!
Thank you very much and my pleasure... Please excuse the very very late response. Congrats on adding corn to your garden. How did your recent season go? HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!!!
That’s awesome 👏!!! I hope 🤞 I get corn 🌽 I have grown pretty much everything else. Corn 🌽 was something I desperately wanted to grow. Every single year I would try to put corn 🌽 in the ground and the birds would eat the kearnels so I tried everything and the birds ate the seeds. This year I bought the plants 🌱 and it’s absolutely unbelievable that I was able to grow what looks like a stalk. I did try doing it a different way. I think 🤔 your way is a better way !!!’ I’ll try it!!!

Thank you! Best video I have seen on pollinating corn. Do you have a video on growing beets? I bought one with white tape and I am barely seeing the sprouts to rise up which is a good sign.
Thank you very much.. Please excuse the very late response. That's the one thing I have never grown is BEETS. but as a gardener beets remind me of garlic, onions, rhubarb. My suggestion would be to plant them at a comfortable depth and also with loose soil in a well-drained area. Do not overwater them but keep the soil moist and they will survive in 6-8 hours or sun and partial shade. How did your beets do last season? HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!
NO.. You don't have to do it more than once..Once you add the pollen to the silk the process immediately starts. Unless you used a stem that dried out and did not have any pollen on it.. HAPPY GARDENING!!!
Hi and Welcome to Kimberly Cares For U gardening and more.. I am very sorry for the very late response.. HAND POLLINATING: One time is sufficient enough because once you do it the development of the ears will start. Let me know how it grows!! over here in Northern California and it is hot hot hot!! Thanks for the info on hand pollinating. One guestion... you trimmed one stem from the " chandelier " can I use that stem for more then one silk? And is this an on going thing i need to do with each silk as they develop? Can you shake the corn as well to get pollen to drop? Great video thanks for the garden tips!!
Captain MacK Well hello California🌕 My pleasure... To answer your questions: #1. I used 1 male stem to pollinate the female silk.. #2.Yes you do. This guarantees that your corn will develop properly. but also must have consistent balance watering and the perfect temperatures outside. #3. Yes you can skake the corn. My perferred methond just increases your corn development. . I hope this helps and HAPPY GARDENING!! 🌿🌿

Thanks so much for the great and we'll explained info. I have 7 plants in grow bags in a small kiddie pool with a overflow hole of about 2+ inches so the watering is great and they are growing like crazy. my question is the male part. the little hanging pods, is the pollen insde? keep up the great work! !
cakelady Dee jones Thank you very much. I am glad you found it helpful. 😊 Your method wow how creative!!! 👍👍 TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION: The pollen covers the exterior part of the male stem/male chandelier. It can be transferred based on nature-the wind blowing the pollen directly onto the female part which is the silk. Planting your corn in a proper row order assist in the pollen actually falling onto the female silk if you don't hand pollinate. . I personally prefer hand pollinating because that guarantees full corn ear development and including balance watering and the correct temperatures outside.... . Hope this helps and HAPPY GARDENING.❤🌽 Let me know how it grows..
Hi Kimberley, great vide! I’ve got a couple of questions if you don’t mind...as I’m new to gardening :) in spring i plan on growing just two rows of corn, I’ve heard that it works better to plant in rows of 4 min, unless I pollinate it myself. Is that correct? Would I have success doing it that way? Also, I did two rows last year and the corn cobs were pretty small. Is that due to only having two rows and therefore not being pollinated well enough? I never knew much about pollinating let alone self pollinating until today, haha.🤷🏾♂️
Hello. please excuse. Extremely late reply to your questions.... Welcome to the world of gardening.. (1- 2) .HOW TO PLANT: Yes it will help. Planting them closer makes it easier for the stalks to pollinate themselves. The closeness of the plants is a benefit because as the wind blows it blows the pollen from one stalk to another. Hand pollination is always that back-up plan to the back-up plan. So I still encourage the hand-pollinating also. : (3)SMALL COBS- there are several things to factor into why the cobs were small: one of them is not enough pollen actually reached those ears of corn, another reason is the temperature that season, another reason could be in the inconsistency and imbalance of watering. ITS OK . IM LATE BUT I AM HERE TO HELP YOU.. Let me know how it went or if you started again this season. HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!!
I’m here because we had one corn plant just pop out of the ground from the duck in squirrel food we throw out there for the animals. One of the corn kernels planted and grew a plant about 5’ 5” tall. The male and female are visible and the silkies are pretty full but the male part isn’t hanging like the ones in the video. They are still very close to their stem. Does that matter? The silkies popped up several days ago and I read its best to pollinate within 10 days of the silkies showing. I went ahead and pollinated the two silkies pods the plant has. Guess I’ll find out if it matters or not.
Hello, LOL that's the fastest way to unconsciously plant corn.. Love it. MALE CHANDELIER: No.. It may hang or stand straight out. The more important thing is that you use one or two stems to pollinate the female. POLLINATION TIME: Yes it is good to pollinate within that time frame or a few days after. If you wait too long the silk will curl up and begin to dry or look dead which is part of the growth process.... Doing the hand pollination is a another step to help guaranteed that your ears will fully develope. If you had planted your corn kernels close to one another the wind would blow and pollinate the ears of corn automatically. Keep me posted and take a look at my website for personal products and virtual services: Https://Kimberlycaresforu.com HAPPY GARDENING !!! 🌽🌽🌽🍆🌱🍅🍍🍠🍋 .

Hello Kim, First let me say that I am sorry for my extremely delayed response to you. Now let get to some answers for you. 1). YES, The more you plant the better chances for even pollination. Planting them in closer rows with the wind assists in this natural pollination process.. (2). SELF-POLLINATING - It's like topping off your gas tank... You do it to guarantee that your corn is pollinated. So I do it no matter how I plant my corn simply to guarantee that my cobs will grow in addition to good drainage, watering, and sunlight. I hope that you are still a subscriber and enjoy my other gardening videos. @@KimberlyCaresForU I used this method to pollinate my corn that summer and had success! Not the best harvest but it was my first time. Trying again this summer and hoping for even more kernels :) Thanks!!
@@kawaii_strong Hey. CONGRATS on adding corn to your garden.... I am very glad to hear that you did....Thats ok.. Listen corn Is not the easiest vegetable to grow because it takes a lot of overall maintenance meaning that extreme balance of temp , watering and hand pollination . You tried and you got something from your harvest so I am proud of you . .. Next season is your pro moment!! Keep me posted on your next season of growing corn and feel free to always ask any questions you have... .. HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!🌽🌽🌽🌽
gia springs Thank you. YES! You have to make sure that there is slik(female part) and The top stems( chandelier /male stems) to start the direct pollinating.
gia springs Corn is a very high maintenance vegetable because it requires balanced & consistent watering for each ear to develop fully and in most cases perfect temperatures and wind to encourage natural pollination. I truly hope this helps . Let me know how it goes and always HAPPY GARDENING!! 💕💕🌱🌽🌽
Thanks. You just brush them? Does nothing need to sort of come off onto the silk? I thought maybe the seed looking bits might need to come of onto the silk.
Hi and you are very welcome... It is a fine power that easily rubs off onto the female silk. So you dont have to rub it aggressively the pollination process should be gently done and only takes a blink for each physical cob to become polinated... Thanks for watching and for your question. great thanks for the informs..wow i think i have alot of male corn lol or maybe I'll just have to wait for the corn to develop more. I've planted this corn first day of spring in April. no silk yet and its around 3 ft tall right now
gia springs Yw. Gardening is amazing but there are main factors in gardening that we unfortunately cannot control temperature being one of them. I have planted corn several times with no chemicals added to the soil and I have gotten different results every time.. Dont give up. Just continue to keep your watering consistent ..
Hello, Badger P. First let me say I am very sorry for my extremely delayed response to you... Secondly thanks for watching my video. Now tell me how did it do after you pollinated them? I need to do this today because I only have a few stalks. ,Do you only have to do this once or should I repeat it a few times? Thank you so much for this video!
sonastainbrook Your welcome... Once pollinated is enough. Corn is a bit high maintenance. Consistent, balanced watering, perfect temps and hand pollinating or wind pollinating play a critical part in full corn ear growth. Keep me posted on your harvest. HAPPY GARDENING!! 🌽❤
sonastainbrook 1 should be enough for each ear of corn. Once each ear has been pollinated you will see the ear change and begin its final stages of growth.. When you hand pollinate the key is to do it early morning when the male stems/ Chandelier is full of pollen.
Had a few last night and they were all fully pollenated! Thank you so much for helping me out. Bodacious is one of my favs.. Have about 20 more to eat too..
(1). A permanent fix for squirrels and raccoons is having chicken wire fencing to completely cover your garden....secured around the bottom so they can't dig under it and thick thick bird wiring over the top your garden.. (2). A ongoing type of method but one that I use is powered cayenne pepper..(not flakes) . Sprinkling it around those vegetables and plants that they seem to want to bite inorder to drink the juice from and around the based of your entire garden will keep them away.. Any animal with a nose is the type of animal that will sniff things first. The pepper will burn their nose and keep them out of your garden. ONGOING- when it rains you have to wait until the ground is dry again and sprinkle more pepper or around your entire garden/ plants. It's only effective when it's dry outside and when the pepper that you sprinkle on the plants or ground is still red..... (3).Planting peppermint/mint plants around the plants that seem to get more attention from the squirrels, raccoons or mice will keep them away. .I keep peppermint/mint plants in my garden every gardening season. I plant them.very close to any fruit and vegetables that have juice in them like tomatoes, celery, watermelons, cucumbers , strawberries, squash plants, cantaloupe and many more..... PEPPERMINT PLANT IS THE SAME AS MINT PLANT ( it's just an abbreviation of the plant name) Again these are methods that I use and they do work.. HAPPY GARDENING 🍅🍇🍊🍍🥒🍓🍠🍎🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
Klove The Lou : Thank you very much for the advice. I was thinking about the chicken wire and bird netting. This is my first time planting corn, and I really do not want my eighteen little corn stalks ravaged by those bandits. I’ve planted a bunch of sunflowers in several areas of my yard to distract the thieves from my other plants. However, the squirrels won’t even wait until harvest time. They keep digging up my sunflower plants, I guess in search of seeds or nuts. The plants, which are about four to five inches tall, are just cast aside and left on top of the ground to die. I like animals and I don’t mind sharing with them. However, when they just come and take what they want and leave me the scraps, it’s time for them to go. Anyway, thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it. Have a wonderful day.
@@littlejoe9381you're very welcome yes .. and congrats on your adding corn to your garden. CHICKEN WIRE: The chicken wire with a very secured bird netting over the top then make sure you secure the wire at the base with bricks, rocks or long wood logs again to keep them from digging under the fence. This will be the best long term this method considering your specific situation. There is always one or two that will attempt to still get to the good stuff fruits and veggies. SUNFLOWER PLANTS: Now with the sunflower plants what I've done with that is I planted all of mine at the opposite end of my garden which encouraged the squirrels to only congregate there for feeding. I am very surprised that they dug up your plants, but they are squirrels that are capable of anything. MY CORN: the chicken wire, bird netting bricks, rocks, logs and cayenne pepper all together worked for me . Trust me I enjoy animals from a distance rather in my garden of love and hard work... So don't let them take over be consistent in protecting your corn and other vegetables.. HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!

I'm wondering the same thing. The silks are there but the tassels aren't "open" like in this video. Like in this vid, pieces of the tassel are falling off, but mine are still stuck to the stem like they aren't "open" yet. But the silks need pollinated so not sure what to do.
This year I'm doing an experiment where I picked up corn left on the ground from harvest last year and I'm growing it to see what would happen if I did that and so far it's at least six foot tall and growing at least one ear of corn and its tasle or male part is weird put still doing poll on I planted 10 kernels and 6 are growing I don't know if I should hand pollinate or not
Hi. Welcome to Kimberly Cares For U gardening and more.. WATERING: One factor to focus on is how often it rains in your area. Watching this will help with how often you personally need to water your stalks.. Our weather here in Zone 6 in April brings a lot of rain so my watering varies. You never want the soil to be dry because that will produce small to abnormal cobs of corn. Perfect balance of watering and drainage is necessary for full ears of corn. HOW OFTEN: Use your hand to physically check your soil weekly and water weekly. DAILY WATERING: this would ONLY be necessary if you live in extremely high temps / hot area..HAPPY GARDENING!!🍆🍍🍠🍓🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽 Make sure you checkout my website for personal products and more: KimberlyCaresForU.com

Ineshia Newton 🌽POLLINATING TIME FRAME: Once should be enough... Of course more than once is not going to harm the ears growth... There is only a short time frame where you can self pollinate each ear of corn... That is when the silk is still clear or off white in color.. When the silk turns brown the ear has already completely developed and at that point no reason to pollinate...
Hello, Lets talk color.. COLOR: NO you do not want to wait until it is brown..When it is brown the stem has dried out and no longer has the fresh pollen on it.. The only purpose of the male part of your corn plant is for pollinating.. As you saw when I cut one piece off it was green and that is when you want to use it... that is a really smart way to pollinate all the other videos simply say take and pull the little beads off and throw them onto the silk but i like your way much better and this is my first year actually growing corn so im glad i ran across your video
Please excuse the very very very late response. Thank you very much... oh ok.... Yes for me this is an easier and faster way to hand pollinate. It is more of a guarantee of healthy full individual ears of corn.
Congrats on adding corn to your garden.

Thanks a lot. We have been enjoying our corn for about a week now. I will now hand pollinate the rest.

Great video. Very informative, quick and to the point. Plus I see your corn looks healthy and doing well. This is my second year planting corn. Last year wasn't great but now I know to plant in block instead of long rows. Thanks again!

Do you have to do that process more than once for the same silks? Or you just do it once and its good? Thanks for the video!! :)
NO.. You don't have to do it more than once..Once you add the pollen to the silk the process immediately starts. Unless you used a stem that dried out and did not have any pollen on it..
HAPPY GARDENING!!!
Do you do this only one time, or is it done multiple times before harvesting?
Hi and Welcome to Kimberly Cares For U gardening and more.. I am very sorry for the very late response..
HAND POLLINATING: One time is sufficient enough because once you do it the development of the ears will start.

over here in Northern California and it is hot hot hot!!

Thanks for sharing. Fantastic info. I will do that.

:
(3)SMALL COBS- there are several things to factor into why the cobs were small: one of them is not enough pollen actually reached those ears of corn, another reason is the temperature that season, another reason could be in the inconsistency and imbalance of watering.

I hope that you are still a subscriber and enjoy my other gardening videos.

great video! do you wait until silk develops to start the pollinating? i have tassels with no silk yet
gia springs Thank you.

Can you rub more than one tassel on an ear since you have more tassels than ears??
Hi and Welcome to Kimberly Cares For U.Gardening and more...
TASSELS: You can but it will not make that big of a difference. ( it won't harm the cobs) All it takes is one dry pollinated tassel to assist in your corn growth along with balanced watering, drainage and overall consistent good weather..Let me know how it grows..

Klove The Lou hi....im new in corn farming

Any tips for keeping squirrels and raccoons out of your corn patch?
PEPPERMINT PLANT IS THE SAME AS MINT PLANT ( it's just an abbreviation of the plant name)
Again these are methods that I use and they do work..
Klove The Lou : Thank you. You too.

Does it matter if your males are still very tight and not falling? How young can I hand pollinate - when I first see silks? Thanks!
Stacey Wilson Tell me more about what you mean the malea are tight?
I'm wondering the same thing. The silks are there but the tassels aren't "open" like in this video. Like in this vid, pieces of the tassel are falling off, but mine are still stuck to the stem like they aren't "open" yet. But the silks need pollinated so not sure what to do.
Obviously she doesn't know
This year I'm doing an experiment where I picked up corn left on the ground from harvest last year and I'm growing it to see what would happen if I did that and so far it's at least six foot tall and growing at least one ear of corn and its tasle or male part is weird put still doing poll on I planted 10 kernels and 6 are growing I don't know if I should hand pollinate or not
Hello... sorry for the extremely late response.. Yes I always hand pollinate it's like your security on growth and harvest.

How often do you water your corn stalks?
DAILY WATERING: this would ONLY be necessary if you live in extremely high temps / hot area..HAPPY GARDENING!!🍆🍍🍠🍓🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽

Please tell me can we produce our own seed for Baby Corn variety from Thailand. ?
This is seed treated with some red substance and I don't know if I can produce exactly the same variety the Baby Corn .
I know cross pollination can produce something different, different plants
Have a Nice day :)

Baby corn is just immature corn. Although there may be special varieties, but any corn can be baby corn.
That I am not sure as I have never planted or used the baby corn from Thailand...

Hello how many times do you cut pollen stem to pollinate corn
Ineshia Newton
🌽POLLINATING TIME FRAME: Once should be enough... Of course more than once is not going to harm the ears growth...
There is only a short time frame where you can self pollinate each ear of corn... That is when the silk is still clear or off white in color.. When the silk turns brown the ear has already completely developed and at that point no reason to pollinate...
Ineshia Newton Very sorry about the extremely late response...
Happy Gardening 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽
Hello im gio just wanted to day thanks ima go grow corn now
Hola.. Bueno Bueno Aviseme como esta creciendo y si tiene alguna pregunta.
We have to wait until the Male is brown?
Hello, Lets talk color..
COLOR: NO you do not want to wait until it is brown..When it is brown the stem has dried out and no longer has the fresh pollen on it.. The only purpose of the male part of your corn plant is for pollinating.. As you saw when I cut one piece off it was green and that is when you want to use it...
Let me know how it grows and Thanks for watching!
