Yep - best mark of modern era. I say that because of the difficulty - that kick from Lucas was moving low and fast (and wobbly), Moorcroft too was charging at it fast. A lot of great marks have the ball 'hanging' and plenty of time for . Smiths vs Bris, Walkers vs Ess, G.Ablett Snr vs Coll, Silvangis vs Nth spring to mind as getting close but they were marking a higher slower ball.
It sucks that this mark basically ended his career. He had severe hip troubles after this and never fully recovered. He will forever be remembered for this mark, but also cut short his career. The irony.
@Alex F Nah it's cactus man, it's a big money sport full of laundered money sugardaddies and pampered millionaires. For decades I used to absolutely love it til wankers like this guy came along and bandwagoned on big clubs and when these entitled idiots team don't win, they sook. It's okay at the lower leagues and non league but at the top it's always the same teams buying all the talent. Boring.
Whether this is the greatest mark of all time or not this is BY FAR the highlight of the great man's commentary career. Bruce was never better than in these 4 minutes
It must be a 'Melbourne thing', Bruce is the reason I don't watch the game anymore...and whenever he's calling the tennis, I don't watch that either. He's nauseating
It also had the rare moment too that Scott Lucas kicked with his right foot. Greatest mark ever I was there behind the goals and chatting to a couple of blokes from the UK as the international series was being played at that time and they were there and it was a great moment Right foot Lucas greatest mark Moorcroft who injured his back after that was never the same player but the mark will go down in history
I remember watching this when I first moved to tassie. Went for the bombers because a friend of mine went for them. This was my first season of AFL I had watched. God this was awesome I love AFL. Just an amazing mark.
There was a book of all time marks. There was a couple of great photos of J Coleman and Ron Todd. It was printed in 1996. Best to look for it in 2nd hand book stores. You are right is a pity we did not have video coverage of those days. Or more of it.
Is this the greatest catch in sport history? OBJ’s catch is on a similar level in the NFL, Yuvraj Singh, Jonty Rhodes, Steve Smith, Paul Collingwood and Glenn Maxwell all have some contenders in Cricket Tyree’s Helmet Catch and Edelmen’s bobble catch were on a larger stage. So was Flyin’ Ryan’s in 2018, setting up Sheed. There’s a few more in footy that could bark up the same tree; Andrew Walker, Shaun Smith, Nick Riewoldt, Jonathan Brown and Jeremy Howe Baseball have gloves that could be considered a threat to overfishing, but Adeiny Hechavarria and Kevin Pillar have impressive hauls. Edwin Baptiste as well, a nice grab in college. But for my money, all of those catches are on a separate tier below Gary Moorcroft’s display of physics defiance. He is SO high off the ground, he is reaching SO far back, and he brings it all the way down cleanly. Plus he snags his sixth goal of the game. This is, The Greatest Catch Of All Time!
Please let me know if you think there’s another catch out there, in ANY sport, that can contend with Moorcroft. Or maybe you think there’s one that’s even better.
Ben Stokes took a ridiculous one handed catch against South Africa in the opening game of the 2018 Cricket World Cup. But to be honest I think this mark is on another level to any catch in any sport ever.
I watched a final a few years back when it was televised in the US and it was an absolute blast, I love the sport and so does everyone I introduce it to!
I loathe Essendon with every fibre of my being, and this is still the greatest mark in the history of Australian Rules football. I remember being at a pub and there were two roars. The first when the people watching live saw the mark, and the second when everyone else turned their heads and saw the replay.
I remember this mark.. i was in the kitchen and my dad said "come and have a look at this one" and i went into the lounge and watched the replays lol i remember it being front page of the major newspapers also
I've seen some fantastic marks like Gary Ablett Snr's and Andrew Walkers but this takes it. It was perfect, Moorcroft had air and he flexed is body. Mark of the millennium.
amongst my top 10 of all-time for sure. I hope to someday come across super rare footage of a John Coleman speccie, doubt there would ever be any footage that exists although I did see the AFL release some new footage recently but nothing with high marks that he was famous for. Tragedy for footy that video cameras didn't record VFL in those early days
I'm still backing this mark as the best of all time.
@M stfu stud
@M AFL is the most important sport. AFL is getting more popular all around the world while soccer is declining and failing miserably
Same
Sean Smith
Absolutely
0:52 You will never ever see a more brilliant side-on angle of a magnificent mark. Great job by Channel Seven here.
gives you goosebumps
@prime1143.
Fox Footy with a replay of it at least a year after.
Channel 7 with the original footage.
Ya gay @prime1143
This will always be the greatest mark of all time.
wilburjmc what's close then?
Nothing. Keep in mind he stretched out after jumping on his back.

This is the best. Riewoldts running-back mark against the swans where he literally could’ve died is a close second for me.
@@samb8744 And now another Riewoldt's done that against the Crows, yet this is still easily the greatest mark of all tiime
fantastic commentary. What an incredible mark
This is the first ever video I've seen of Australian football. And I must say it's awesome! From the USA
MANCHESTER UNITED dude you need to get a life
@MANCHESTER UNITED What's your problem man?... I have seen this message on a few videos... So what if people like different sports..
That's like Pavarotti being the first person you ever hear singing after a lifetime of deafness.
My friend, you will not see better.... little man taking a 'towering mark'
It sucks that this mark basically ended his career. He had severe hip troubles after this and never fully recovered. He will forever be remembered for this mark, but also cut short his career. The irony.
@MANCHESTER UNITED Well obviously the softies and effeminate boys need something to do. Thats why soccer was invented!
@Alex F Nah it's cactus man, it's a big money sport full of laundered money sugardaddies and pampered millionaires. It does suck but at the same time, I think I would be happy with a shortened career because I took a mark that fucking spectacular
I’d take the immortalisation over a couple more years playing in the AFL.
22 years on and nothing is close to this masterpiece!
Whether this is the greatest mark of all time or not this is BY FAR the highlight of the great man's commentary career. Bruce was never better than in these 4 minutes
This should have more views, from geelong fans! Love Bruce commentating though
booo! lol
legendary

Bruce McAvaney's passion is simply wonderful.
It must be a 'Melbourne thing', Bruce is the reason I don't watch the game anymore...and whenever he's calling the tennis, I don't watch that either. He's nauseating
Not a Melbourne thing. A lot of people dislike him for no good reason. I like him. So much genuine love and passion for sport. Got to admire that.
@@ronanrogers4127 I know I'm five years late replying to you, but I believe Bruce is originally from Adelaide not Melbourne
Greatest mark ever taken. The end. If you don't understand the degree of difficulty of this, not discussing. It's not up for debate
Moorcroft Mark of the Year 2001 - 2101.
mark of the century right here
It also had the rare moment too that Scott Lucas kicked with his right foot. Greatest mark ever I was there behind the goals and chatting to a couple of blokes from the UK as the international series was being played at that time and they were there and it was a great moment Right foot Lucas greatest mark Moorcroft who injured his back after that was never the same player but the mark will go down in history
what a mark!!!!!!
SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!! Chills 19 years later

God this was awesome I love AFL. Just an amazing mark.
2020: Still the greatest mark ever
Its a mongrel kick too they're hard to catch the mongrels
Still pretty good 22 years later
OMG, Lucas has a right foot!!
2021 here. 20th anniversary since this happened. Still the best mark of all time. Iconic.
Forever the best mark of all time. Greetings from 🇩🇪
Footy❤❤
20 years ago today, still the best mark
It actually did get shown on cnn!
Nothing will ever top that
To me it's the greatest mark ever purely because of his height.. 9 feet in the air and for a bloke who's 5 feet 7 at best? Just incredible..

greatest mark of all time, no question.
brilliant call from Bruce Mc-
seriously makes my eyes water, everytime I see it.
I can't stop watching it. My replay button broke
US fan, and this is my favorite mark of all time.
Dermie enjoyed every minute of it.
stilll havent seen a mark to beat it and its 12 years later
and the passion in bruce mcavaneys voice makes it ''SPECIAL''..
@nickycooks the term mark is derived from the native australian(aboriginal) word 'markee' which means, to catch something :)
Hooks it back.... OHHHHHHHHHH WHAT A MARK SENSATIONALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl
This is the best mark of all time, hands down
2021 season came and went. Still the greatest mark of all time
Only negative is the hands on the shoulders and neck.
How’s the stat line? 6 goals from 11 kicks with no handballs. Love it
I remember this mark.. i was in the kitchen and my dad said "come and have a look at this one" and i went into the lounge and watched the replays lol i remember it being front page of the major newspapers also
good mark but I don't like essendon
me too
I need to start watching more matches!!!!
Jesus, the AFL has so many highlights.
Kept replaying 0:53 for a while! EPIC!
why am I only just seeing this now
best mark of all time, came out of no where
@BIGDAZR i am a bulldogs fan too but i can appreciate the greatness of this mark
I love Bruce's call
Forget about the mark, Scott Lucas using his right boot is unbelievable!
the magic was all started by Lucas using his right foot
gary moorcroft: the first person to see heaven and come back alive.
GOAT
2001. Mark of the century. 2016. Free kick Hawthorn.
I am a doggies fan but I LOVE that mark!
no shit, ive seen so many marks and this has got to be one of the best !
Grants desperation at the end was pure toughnest
Easily the most spectacular mark i've seen
Greatest mark I’ve ever seen. This isn’t mark of the century. This is the mark of ALL TIME
Still remember watching this Infront of an open fire and was dozing off then this happened and man was i instantly wide awake
i remember watching this game...moorcroft was on fire and this was the climax
Greatest mark of all time no debate.
I absolutely hate the Bombers, but I still think this is the best mark ever taken
I remember going to this game, I was 9 at the time. Best mark ever.
No matter who you go for...this will always be the best mark of all time
I can imagine broken bones happen a lot here? Good show.
Evan as a pies fan, In 2022 looking back this was the peak of Western Civilisation.

@SultanOfMischief I love it when people discover this game for the first time! It must be exciting!
Andrew Walker, eat your heart out. This is unbeatable.
How much would I give to hear a QuadCall of this.

"Geez!", we got the greatest game on earth : )
Best mark ever taken.
whats more amazing? the moorcroft mark or lucas kicking on his right foot?
Was that Dermie in the box with Bruce? Was he blind? Gold.
I know he get a lot of hate, but McAvaney... premier Australian commentator!
Life can be so cruel. Take one of the best marks in the history of the game, injure yourself so badly you basically never play again.
Gary Moorecroft Mark Of The Forever 💯🖤❤️
You see so many comments on videos where peeps were there. My turn. Funniest thing was my mates were ya king at the time and missed it!!
0:41 it's the woman that supports the Bulldogs from the "This is me" metro ad on during the footy on the right.
The mark heard 'round the world
amongst my top 10 of all-time for sure.
I hope to someday come across super rare footage of a John Coleman speccie, doubt there would ever be any footage that exists although I did see the AFL release some new footage recently but nothing with high marks that he was famous for.
Tragedy for footy that video cameras didn't record VFL in those early days
@nickycooks the act of catching the ball in AFL
Greatest grab of all time, nothing comes close
You've got to be joking! The umpire should have paid a free kick against Moorecroft for the hands on his opponents shoulders.
It was a mongrel kick but how do you mark the mongrels?
And it's a goal when they point with both hands (6 points)
Anyone else wish they could erase their memory so that they can see this again for the first time?
@TheSlayer95 He wrecked his hip when he came down (You can see him clutch at it as he walks back to take his shot on goal)
the fucking best of all-time imo, im a essendon supporter but fuck me you cant say that this is one of the most sensational grabs of all time
Best mark ever and always be

Funny how Ramanauskas didnt even have his hands in the back
