Ommmmg, have to say Whitney, that sequin striped dress was the inspo for many UK retailers after this episode. Remember everyone trying to get their hands on the dress and so many lookalikes!!! Actually think I have photo evidence from NYE 2011 haha!

I don't typically compliment people's appearance, because there are so many other wonderful qualities to compliment someone on. But in this instance, WHIT, your skin is a buttery, beautiful dreamscape of youthfulness and I want to bottle it.

I think you guys are mostly pretty objective when it comes to Olivia - like as objective as you could possibly be in this situation. You give her a fair shake.
Agree. I actually think you two have been really generous about her, especially in scenes when not being objective would have been totally justified!
Maybe because Olivia isn't that bad of a person in real life that's why Whitney watched Olivia's portrayal in the series as pure entertainment only

I NEVER comment on RUclips videos but I wanted to jump on and say how much I have been loving these videos and watching your lives! I was a huge Hills / City fan when it was first airing and I feel like I am reliving my youth now. Your channel has been such a great source of laughs during these tough times.
Whitney - you are awesome. As someone who was a fan when these shows were first airing, it's so cool to see you "all grown up" now. Your "I love my baby but" and "I love my husband but" videos are so relatable (as a fellow early 30s woman). Timmy - you are seriously hilarious. I so appreciate everything that you bring to this channel. You crack me up but also bring the realness when it's needed. The two of you are a dynamic duo! At the end of the day that moment was probably a realisation of why Erin had that job. She understood the Elle reader. They wanted to see fergie the woman, not hot rockstar. I completely get it. Such a good episode!

But I always felt like Elle was a ‘commercial high fashion’ magazine, more than high fashion. Anyways I see why I loved this show so much and still do!

Guys the mystery is solved on Olivias costume jewelry “childhood education”:
“Her aunt worked at the auction house Doyle New York in the couture and costume jewellery department, so growing up she would attend antiques fairs and roadshows, learning what was good and what wasn't.“
Olivia looks so chic and perfect. So for me her social awkwardness is great. You expect her to be smooth and eloquent but she is a stumbling bumbling mess when it comes to having a normal conversation.
It’s like she was made in a factory or something lol
Part of why Erin is so good at her job is that she calls people out on their BS, so even though it’s disrespectful to talk to your boss that way...Erin’s points are absolutely valid. Her job is publicity and The City was part of Elle’s publicity. It must have been so hard for Erin to grin and bear Olivia’s ineptitude. Olivia totally made it seem like working at Elle was a walk in the park. For Erin who worked so hard for her career, I’m sure she wasn’t into sending the message that Elle just hires any pretty person and allows them to do a cruddy job. Olivia truly needed to do better.
I would love a musical compilation of every time Whitney sang the intro song part

I came back here waiting for the new SK ep. God I miss The City and as an editor I was SO enamoured with this show. And I was CRUSHED when it was dropped. Olivia's uptown girl support seems sweet, and overly privileged (lol), but there's such a beautiful juxtaposition between the way the older girls shelter the younger girls from the storm. And how passionately Erin holds onto her position; the way she protects Whit is by taking on her boss. Its such a fantastic scene. I worked for mtv early on in my career and I got hooked on MTV reality shows. I had access to all of the shows and from memory the boxes of VHS tapes for quite a number of years. But of ALL the shows, I really really loved The City. Stay cool guys.

I wanted to say, I think the photographer was the one who was out of line for asking Whitney out at her photoshoot. He is there in a professional capacity and he should've chosen a different time to ask. Whitney was well within her boundaries to turn him down in that moment, I wish women wouldn't be so apologetic for having boundaries.
I watch all the episodes on MTV Canada and they have all the original music!

I've rewatched the series a few times over the years on DVD, so great to see your guys' reactions now! I remember when this episode came out people weren't sure if Kelly had said being with a French man is "a great way to get banged" or "a great way to get bags" (as in French guys in fashion gifting women bags...I guess?) Great that you guys cleared that up for me a decade later haha

Loved watching these every week after having watched them in real-time - forgetting how good things develop into season 2, this being overall a great episode. So glad the show existed at the time that it did, definitely contributing to me wanting a career in the fashion industry - so thank you for that :) Also for sure Fergie's music would have been playing at the beginning, agreed!

I'm so old that I remember when Fergie and Renee from Wild Orchid were on an 80s show called Kids Incorporated. Damn...now I have the theme song stuck in my head.
I think Joe Zee needed to give Olivia chances to keep Elle relevant to the show. Olivia also has killer personal fashion sense, so it must’ve been tough for Joe Zee to just give up on her. Still, she doesn’t have much substance aside from how fashion forward she is.
Also, I missed watching Whit work at magazines because she was so creative and did such great work. I understand that she had to move onto her own creative endeavors, but I hope that someday she can return to that.

Similar to the Aaron and Olivia story that’s on and on. Been binge watching the Hills and the LC,Spencer and Heidi thing got dragged out too long for 5 seasons. Never the less still very enjoyable to watch at the age of thirty. The City & the Hills.😁

Agreed...Olivia has the best style of anyone ever. She’s definitely an icon at this point. Her attention to detail and mixing prints amazes me. I watched the first season of this show when it aired and couldn’t stand her but her style is undeniable and for that I cannot hate on her. She’s a style goddess.
