Hard Shifting P0796: Honda Ridgeline

- Опубликовано: 29 июл 2016
- After a severe front-end collision, and a trip to the body shop, this 2010 Honda Ridgeline looks better than it drives.
Symptoms are very hard and delayed shifts, Check Engine light, and a flashing "D" indicating a transmission fault.
I attempt to sift through the trouble codes to find the root cause of the problem...
Enjoy! - Авто/Мото
The difference between good mechanics and hacks. This guy is a good mechanic.
Nice find Ivan...a certain other 2% tuber makes fun of those of us that do visual inspections, this is a great testimony why you do. Visuals have saved my bacon numerous times.
Well done man. New Ridgeline owner here and will be subbing. Found a 2012 with 53k miles. Great truck so far.
Fantastic study an thought process,...great observation...nice job ivan..thanks for the video
Great video excellent. I not only enjoyed learning more about my Ridgeline but I also enjoyed how you diagnosed this one. I've had a whining noise on acceleration on my 2007 Ridgeline with 119K miles on it. I've been told by the dealer it is the transmission whining. I'm waiting to see if they will replace it since they sold me the truck with a warranty.
Excellent find, Ivan. You should be proud of that one.
Extremely thorough and intelligent assessment Sir!
Great video Ivan. Good diagnosis, you always go the whole nine yards on testing plus visual inspection of the possible problem.
The importance of a visual inspection! Nice find!
Ivan should be instructing in a Tech. college somewhere . He's a natural talent at explaining tough problems especially electrical glitches.
great job.... that's how a great mechanic finds the real problem. excellent work.
Hey Ivan, what good call and you said you didn't know automatic transmissions...LOL Keep up the good work and videos. I do enjoy them.
Nice video, Love the way you work things out :)
Awesome Ivan! Great job.
Wow nice job diagnosing the problem... Good eye mate👍
God bless you for working without a lift. Great video.
He's a mobile mechanic, it comes with the territory.
@@rusco321 he doesn’t have a lift in his garage either.
Nice Ivan Nice!!!!!! I like your approach.
the power of visual inspections
Wow that was way easier than I figured well done
Awesome job Ivan!
Man I wish in UK we had techs like you and Eric O.
Denholm Willmer
And Scotty;)
Great video. Good spotting man+
Yeah... I'd have crimped the can back on the body... but I'm perverted that way. For a customer, no way. Love my '11 Ridgeline! Good work Eric.
Nice Ivan! visual inspection rules!!!
Awesome diagnostic
Profecional job great work saludos frome mexico
Great video!
Thanks for this video.Same problem with my Chevy Cruze 6T40 . All oil ok. What shall I do.
Nice one Ivan. Does the Verus allow you in koeo to activate each solenoid and see the responce.
good pick there ivan!
Thanks for the info and video. Is valve D directly underneath C?
Bonus footage should have been half a can of plasti-dip poured over that speed sensor connector. To seal the water inside so it can make green crusties asap without being bothered.
Hiram Gutierrez uncrimps and recrimps internal transmission solenoids on his channel to solve shifting issues with them, but that tool prolly not for this external one. Although the proof of concept showed that it would work for at least a while. JB weld to the rescue again? This one has time issues, the more time you have it the more issues you will have to play with.
As soon as I heard loose solenoid I was wondering which one? Was it replaced? This one and not yet. Another one off find for the fix Ivan, great detective work here.
you definitely figured out that problem
Ivan Used to Fault Find X-Ray equipment. Now retired but still enjoy the chase. Keep up the videos, enjoy them. One question, what is your favourite car manufacturer( as far as diagnostics and repair). Cheers Garry
Nice work.
Nice job and thanks for fixing the Hondo...LoL
love your videos man. where's your shop ? where you from
I have a Ridgeline as well (2007) with 110,000 on her. I have noticed a little bit of a knock when I first start her up. Then when she warms a little it goes away. Should I be worried?
Cool fix first seen you on South Main Auto
your a good mechanic,
Good work
Really enjoyed watching you work through this one Ivan. Anyone who mocks the benefits of visual inspection is a complete jackass. Thanks for proving it Ivan!
humm anyone particular in mind with that comment?????
Well, yeah, it's our favorite 1.4%er! Ya know, that guy who honestly believes that 98% of all mechanics are "hacks." He also believes that mechanics should not use their vision as a troubleshooting tool!
I used to occasionally endure his torturous vids and pick out his hypocrisy. Best one is when he's fixing his own Pontiac and, after a mind numbing several part series attempting to troubleshoot it using his "scientific" and "methodological" approach, ends up ultimately guessing at which part to replace. Too funny.
***** Well there is a reason I am the favorite 98%'er on youtube!! haha! And Matt has been in and commented on my videos
Matt has be IN your videos?
+Baxrok2 oh no he has commented on my videos and me being the 98% sorry didn't mean to be confusing
That's great when the issue can be solved by an external part. You must have pilot eyes!
Good job ivan a hit like that could cause all kind's of problem's
Did you get some lapping compound and a zip tie and put that thing back in the car?
Insurance adjuster: "But that wiring harness is $1,500!"
How much would it cost for you to do whole wiring on older vehicle with engine swap?
Good one Ivan
good job Ivan, I trust the owner was happy
Extremely pleased. At first he was worried that I would take his money and not find the problem...but I assured him that was not my business model :)
So you work on "no-cure no-pay" conditions ?
At least "no-diag no-pay" :)
So, how much was the solenoid at the Hondoo dealer?
good job ivan
hello, hello,. how can you Check the Trans Fluid - level, with out turning on the Engine?¿ 🤔🙄....
What United Ford, Chevy and Dodge lovers, all of them hate Honda Ridgeline.
good job
Good Detective Werk..
Salvage title vehicle a body shop put back together?
Nice diagnosed Ivan. Let the bodyshop pay for the solenoid, because they did not fixed it well.
Hey Ivan I’m experiencing the same codes I believe even the same problem these mechanics I took it too want me to buy a new/used transmission I believe I don’t need one my car was recently in a accident so I believe the accident could of caused this issue I might need a new solenoid idk how should I handle this bro
1: find out location of all solinoids
2: either take them out or replace them and find the part on amazon( best pricing)
3:find locations of all pressure switches and either clean out or replace them...
Can you take a look at my Honda videos? I really need help figuring it what's wrong with it...
*@**4:11** I can't believe- nobody saw all those cracks and fractures in that corner of the transmission case- especially that 1 bolt Boss next to harness? WTF?*
***** I wasn't referring to the "casting marks" I'm talking about the *stress fractures* caused by the steel sub frame smashing into the aluminum case. No "leakage" on top- but definitely a load / stress bearing area. That's an "insurance claim" for you, now days. Make the body look nice, that's enough.
Half a turn on that bolt or a good hard shock to the chassis and that things gonna crumble to bits!
I was just going to comment on that.
Come to NYC Brooklyn I have the same code
Nice !
would this cause a no start? 2015 ody..
U da Man!
Do u charge for diagnostic, I’m about to starting my mobile mechanic business , there any idea u can give me , I’m on Las Vegas
Hi Ivan, did you attend a technical school where you learned about automatic transmissions or you learned by yourself??
Just reading manuals and service information...
Great and you are doing very well, actually i bought some books. but however diagnosing maybe its not that difficult but rebuilding them i find it extremely difficult. do you have the idea on how the tcm finds out that there is a performance issue with the solenoids??
armando nika the guy is wicked smart..he has several degrees if i am correct.
Lol classic body shop crap work! Matt would be very upset you went right in with a visual inspection, shame on you!
Hey man I had to knock this one out quick...no time for setting up scopes and probes. Was on a big time constraint ya know!
motoYam82 Oh yeah man I hear ya! Time constraints! Sounds like you need a premium channel!
Yeah, because having two channels to fill with videos really saves ya some time! So glad to see that channel shrivel up and die.
lol.!
Damn you get a new job too!!! yes Ivan you need a paid channel too that you have no time to post anything to. haha!
Most likely the speed sensor or the wires were messed up, Eric O had one of these just the other day.
Haven't heard anything from the customer for a few weeks, so I can only assume that solenoid was the only real problem...
Sometimes all it takes is a visual inspection. I see this too often as I do alot of work for a local used car dealer. Hey keeps me busy so its all good.
Still have to know where to look...had to gather some evidence before actually pinpointing this one. I've been talking to a few used car lots around here, hopefully can get some work out of them. :)
+motoYam82 You would be very right on that. Yeah they can keep you busy for sure if you can get them on board with all kinds of stuff I usually get all the electrical and airbag stuff from them. Good luck and keep up the good work and videos
Eric The Car Guy always said use OEM Honda automatic transmission fluid only.
This is a dual clutch automatic shifting manual transmission. It is a very different design from the classic automatic transmission with torque converter and shift bands and clutch packs.
Do you really always go to the dealer. Do you ever get some stuff from the junkyard. Cause I know some people don't have the money to buy new parts
Look at the truck...looks like a million bucks! I hope the owner has enough left over for a solenoid ;)
Im talking about when you work on other cars
Honda automatic transaxles are automated manual transaxles, that's why all the electronics are on the outside of the units.
No they aren't. "Automated manuals" have dry clutches and clutch forks and are otherwise identical to "regular" manuals. The only difference being that there is no clutch pedal or direct gear shift lever and the computer controls the fork instead of your foot and a servo controls the gear selection. Honda automatics have torque converters, automated manuals don't.
But great mechanic
no bi directional control? probably not. snap on sometimes lacks important tests like that a lot of the times
The Verus did have bidirectionals...was just easier and more obvious to shift the gears and look for codes in this case :)
what brand of car you get the most mobie calls on
GM, Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai in that order :)
phil holbrook qqqqqqq
how is the weather up there ,it's so hot here
It's been a hot summer...in the 90s almost every day and almost no rain.
My first summer in Altona PA my wife said to me it not that hot. That was in 1993 hot hot . Then Christmas 1999 I like to froze to death. Lol
do you know any good mechanics in central jersey? I have a tucson that won't stay connected to the obd. it starts reading, then comes up no data. I don't want to give it to the wrong mechanic.
You should look at power's and ground&39;s that is the best way to start on that kind of problem that's where i would start?
+Eddie Martinez power and grounds are good. the obd connector stays connected, the obd data just stops coming. I've watched the stream. I get pid, pid, pid, no data, pid, pid, no data. not in that specific order of course. them the scanner software disconnects after about 5 no data sequences.
Lee Dress That is odd PCM look ok from the outside look like it get wet?
+Eddie Martinez not sure where it is. I'll look for it today. 2005 tucson. 2.0L if you know where it is, let me know.

Transmission problem
You don't need a trip to the dealer. You just need a Hot Glue gun and some JB Weld!
shhhh I managed to get in there with some vice grips and crimp that coil back on straight and tight. Truck drove like a dream. Told customer that I recommend replacing the solenoid, but in reality I truly believe the existing unit will work fine for years to come :)
+motoYam82 Your kidding u fixed that solenoid? Nice work Ivan !
vechicles that cost so much when you get them sure don't hold up and throws so many codes like the thing is made with parts that don't hold up to use . solinoids , sensors, modules that suppose to keep the vechicle. running actually do the opposite. and then cost a fortune to fix the thing , old school vechicles that didn't have all these gizmos seemed to hold up better.
Beating a dead horse: the solenoid is damaged, or loose, take it off, inspect it, and repair/replace it.
Nice fix! I really like your videos ( I have watched them all and learned a lot ) but I really hate your camera/filming skills . However I do realize that you're multitasking ,working, troubleshooting & filming and trying to do your best. But ,no offense, please get a tripod .
Yeah Ivan, get a tripod!
I think someone is sending me one soon? :)
Yeah, but it's not a full size one like mr2law probably means. You work frequently in the field, so you can't put your camera on a cart and wheel it around like Eric does. Heck, I'd say that the majority of Paul's videos are hand held! I said this many times at the meetup, people have no idea how challenging it is to make a good video let alone make a good video while working to earn your living.
Amazing thing. A manufacture builds a tranny with external servos. What were they thinking? Aren't they supposed to make life miserable for a Tech.? I don't care what Eric O says about Hondas. They make a quality product for exuberant profits.
Your right about that but it's not the fault of honda the truck was hit and just in the right spot to cause a problem.
Eddie Martinez if it was internal, you wouldn't have said issue. fuck Honda, for that, in particular
I disagree. Much easier to diagnose and replace an external solenoid than drop a tranny pan!
motoYam82 Right Ivan.
Honda is great.
VW puts all sensors and solenoids internal and it makes everything more expensive and time consuming. They also call them sealed units which never need to be serviced which everyone knows is complete bs, automatic transmission fluid needs to be changed even if the manufacturer says it doesn't.
Take it back to the body shop and make them give the guy his money back.
*@**0:58** Lot of dangerous cracks in that tire- I'd never trust that on the highway.*
Dang man that's a sharp eye! Do you do state safety inspections? ;)
*NO THANK YOU*
Tire sipes. They help traction during the winter months.
Garrett Martin The longitudinal cracks in between the treading are stress-age cracks.
(pause)
at about 4 minutes in it seems obvious ...
clear indication that wiring is (significantly) compromised ...
let's see if it's so ...
(play)
What was the take from this video??? Don't buy a car that was involved in a major accident where the sub frame is damaged. Too many shops takes to many short cut when they go to repair a car that was in a major accident. They just spend their time making it pretty and cheap out doing all the stuff that you can't see.
It has all the hallmarks of a car bought damaged by the body shop for a quick profit.
What a hack job!!!! That body shop did disgusting work!!
I thought the body turned out pretty dang nice! Wiring isn't their specialty so you gotta cut them a break :)
Good point Ivan. Also a good opportunity for you to visit them and make them aware of your area of expertise!
Sosa automotive in boonton nj checkem out!!

You are gonna look 80yrs old at 40
manual transmission 1. automatic transmission 0.
FYI: Checking the trans fluid level with the engine off is useless. All automatics have to be checked with engine running and after cycling the gear shift between all gear positions. So you would start the car, let it warm up, shift between PRNDL, then back to P, leave engine running and then pull the dipstick. That's the only way to get a usable fluid level reading.
Did you check the service information for this vehicle? Look it up in prodemand or something and get back to us 👍
@@logancunningham4801 Yes I did. “Check the fluid level with the engine at normal operating temperature”. Thanks. Perhaps different years have different procedures. Don’t be a douche.
Well clearly you didnt because it says to run it until the rad fan comes on and then SHUT THE ENGINE OFF says right in the owners manual. Maybe don't be a knowitall buddy, you must be an American because your guys' automotive training fucking SUCKS.
What do you think after an engine and trans is up to temp it just IMMEDIATELY is no longer at operating temp when shut off? Hahaha 🤣🤣
@@logancunningham4801 Clearly you don't understand what "don't be a douche" means. I will continue being a "know-it-all" (which I wasn't trying to be) as long as you continue being a douche. The owners manual for MY model year when I owned a Ridgeline DID NOT say turn the engine off. My current brand new Acura (which is a Honda product) ALSO DOESN'T say to turn the engine off. In FACT, they give two methods for checking the fluid level: a "cold" method which requires the vehicle to sit off for 12 hours and a HOT method where you check at operating temperature and cycle through each gear, pausing for 3-5 seconds in each gear. So who's the know-it-all now? You must NOT be an American because you're a bigot and obviously envious of us.
your tablet needs to be updated Ivan your no longer protected you need to update windows now or don't ever use this tablet or laptop online again your way outdated
I'm not seeing the "beautiful". It's an abomination, a squared off honda minivan with a bed.
good job
I like the late 80s Honda Accord in your picture. Great cars.
thank you,their great
When they're taken care of
