Really lovely to watch. Congratulations to the dove bearer and the young men worthy of taking part. Especially touching moment when the Archbishop felt compelled to stroke the dove. Just lovely.
It was the Epiphany day. In Eastern Orthodox Church we celebrate Christ's baptism in the river Jordan by John the Baptist. Priests drop the cross in the waters in order to consecrate them. It happens in any body of water like sea, rivers, lakes etc, that is close to a church. In Greece there is a tradition with people swimming in order to catch the cross. The first person who will catch the cross, it is believed to take the bless and general luck. Tarpon Springs has a very strong Greek community, and they keep that tradition.
It's less weird when you understand the town this takes place in was settled by Greeks and it's famous for being one of the largest sponge diving communities on earth. Ever bought a natural sponge, chances are it came from there. It's all connected to their community culture.
They have a good day in tarpon springs, florida and a good crowd turnout, blessed by jesus christ, our lord, saviorand redeemer!
So glad they had beautiful weather. I wish I could attend as I have about 5 times. I was I’ll with the flu this year.
