- Whilst restoring this transitional '90s Vostok Amphibia/Komanderskie I found a massive blob of shellac covering the entry pallet.
My pallet warmer may well be in pallet warmer heaven and I need to get this watch finished - I have no choice but to make one. When you are training to become a watchmaker you are effectively training to become a toolmaker also. Many tasks require tools which are either hard to come by, extremely expensive or are completely obsolete. And as you progress as a watchmaker you will find the need to make bespoke tools.
This video covers one of those bespoke tools which is absolutely required from time to time on the watchmakers bench - A Pallet Warmer. Join me as I make one and follow the link below to download free plans to make one yourself. I hope you enjoy.

its not an amphibia
I beg to differ - It's a Transitional amphibia. It has Komanderskie on the dial and Amphibia on the back and to the best of my knowledge it was sold originally as such and being a 200m case it's considered an Amphibia. There are other identical ones out there. However, if I am wrong then I apologise.
@Watch Repair Channel ah sounds like someone modified it. its popular to 'mod' them. I think amphibian are usually automatic movements. 🤔
@@jonathanm877 Maybe you're right about the modding - I am not sure but it doesnt really matter that much. In regards to Amphibia automatics, I could be wrong, but I believe that only applies to modern Amphibia's - some older models did have the manual winds as far as I know.
There is no doubt you enjoy showing off your amazing collection of tools and your ability to use them........
Excellent! For "not a machinist" you have quite a few tools and skills. :)
Kind words Jess - thank you
@@WatchRepairChannel He read my mind. extra points for the chisel name drop. ;) Love your stuff.
Been said many times I believe: I really find your videos so relaxing. Thank you for them. 😃
Thanks Katta
Yeah...removing blob seems reasonable.....as does making a handle.
Milling the edges though....and knurling with decorative features...that was just for the pleasure of it😊
I'm the same way. ....it leaves me with a lasting sense of accomplishment and joy.
This character trait is woefully absent in most shops....slam bam thank you mam ...highest profit margin is the way of the world.
So heartening to see this sort of video...or that old seiko dial restore.
Thank you!
Very true 😀
It is nice to see craftmanship alive and well; "you are a man that takes great pride in his work", wonderful to watch and love the taste in music, "bravo".
Thank you
Your workshop is great, it's so peaceful to see all in action you say you're not a machinist though it seems otherwise. Appreciate your content thanks for the educational journey so far.
Great video, great job, thanks for showing
I came here looking for a shipping pallet warmer how-to, but now I'm utterly fascinated by the whole channel. Subscribed!
Brilliant and an ingenious use of your tools and skill set.
Thanks Michael
I just love music in your videos. You have the best job in the world. Thank you cery much for sharing
My pleasure
Very cool. Nice group of tools to work with too!
As always, well done.
Thank you Paul
Great job!.. You should send one to Michael of my Retro watches , another crafty craftsman!. Well done. Adrian 🍀
Superb, functional but lovely elegant design to the handle and care with the craftmanship of the whole assembly and woodworking.
Thanks
Very nice and having fun with the new mill which is good. Looking forward to the Vostok video.
Thanks - Appreciate the comment. Nearly finished with the Vostok - with hope by the weekend
It's fascinating to watch you work with such precision.
Thanks Ronald
Fascinating, thanks for sharing this
Nice workshop! Always enjoy your videos and always enjoy learning about watchmaker tools and methods! Nice craftsmanship on the pallet warmer!
Thank you
Amazing work Mark! Love it.
Thanks Christopher
Awesome job, I really need a mill like that! Cut working time down tremendously. I have seen plenty of boogered up stones in my time on the bench. Once again top notch job!
Cheers Jeremy
Wow pretty cool. Some craftsmanship at work there. 👍
Many thanks
Great vid mark, thanks
Mark, as I was watching you work with the big boy toys I kept thinking, "watch those precious fingers"! We're so used to seeing your deft abilities with very small instruments, I could imagine what one slip would do to make your work with watches a nightmare! One little sliver makes it very painful to do even the simplest of things. As always, loved the video!
Completed my Vostok Amphibia quartz mod!
looks great....
Great video, I always enjoy watching a craftsman building, refining, or restoring a fine quality tool. I'm looking forward to the video on the Vostok restoration. Big thumbs up!
By the way, I like machining videos and I've watched a lot of Abom79 making huge parts for large hydraulic rams and such. The contrast of you making delicate parts for use in watch repair was kind of neat. It's too bad you and Adam (Abom79) live so far apart because it might be fun to see the two of you collaborate on a video together. :-)
I watch Abom from time to time. great content.
Love the Video! Keep it up.
Thanks - Appreciate the comment, will do
I'm a CNC operator (basically a machinist). I must say your machinist skill look good to me. Don't be to hard on yourself, those look great!
Many thanks - I have a lot to learn
@@WatchRepairChannel They're people who I work with that have been in the industry for over 40+ years and they're still learning every day.
@@TheTarrMan Thanks for the encouragement 👍
That was just a great bit of skillful work. Nicly completed. And very well filmed as well as being interesting. Jon. Orchard clocks
Many thanks Jon
You're a clever man! 👍
Thanks Daz
Great job....!!!
Thanks Carlos
Again, each videos you make are different, but I always watch them entirely ! I wish I had your skills to create nearly everything you need, and your imagination ! (I guess a part of your imagination comes from experience so hopefully, with aging I will become more inventive !)
Thanks again for sharing your time !
Cheers :)
I love custom tools, lovely video. =)
Thank you
Nice tool. 👍🏼
Cheers. Really appreciate that.
Very nice.
Thank you
Cool crossover video with machining going on! If you have more knurling in your future, then I suggest you discard the bump-style knurling tool and obtain the kind that has scissors action, pinching the work from above and below. They can be had for reasonable prices, and are much better with smaller lathes. The bump knurler exerts much more pressure on the tool post and substantial bending force on the rod, while the scissors style uses clamping action to do its work.
Thanks for the tip - will look into them
love it
Thank you
Nice vise!
Thank you. Not sure I like it - I have another on order.
Because of your video's, I've ordered 3 mechanical movements and I hated wearing watches before that.
Brilliant
Thanks
nice job mike
Thanks for the encouragement. And thanks for watching.
Best rgds,
Mark
If you have to adjust a lot of pallet stones maybe consider investing in a Bergeon 2229 & 30460. Very convenient set.
This bloke should be in the A-Team.
Not the pretty one though 😂
Beautiful tools. It's can also be used as service plate for pralines. 😊
😂😂😂
0:45, i really like the sound
no idea what happened - wasn't in the editor
As always, very interesting video. Explanations are clear and would make think anybody could do it ! After half a year dedicated to watchmaking, I can tell that is far from easy. At least this video pushes me towards the fact that I definitely need my little CNC 😃
Thank you
@@WatchRepairChannel Mark your videos are extremely useful for a hobbyist like me ! Keep on the good work ! Just corrected a beat error using your videos 👍😁
Please do another eBay watch build video! I really enjoyed it and I'd love to see another one 😀
Very nice, but for me the cross head screw spoilt it. A nice brass countersink screw is what was needed 😁
Where have you been?? Great to have another vid.
Always here :D just doing lots of prep, but always here
Отлично, как и всегда.
Thank you
О, отечественные часы наконец-то! Лайк
May I make an observation, is the hole necessary? Instead of drilling a hole through the plate why not just mill a divot for the pallet fork pin to rest in. That way you would not have any fear of flame/heat damaging the pallet fork. Just a thought. BTW, I enjoy your videos very much, thank you.
Yesterday I repaired a triple clamp for a Harley Davidson. I used a CNC Mill and a manual lathe. I would think you're machinist than me.
Kind words - thank you
@@WatchRepairChannel too bad I didn't proof read. More than me. Thanks for the videos.
💐💐
If you have a mill, everything is mill-able. 🤣
Ha ha - very very true. Any excuse is a good one 😂😂
I have been working on some automatic watch movements and have fixed some with accuracy, And now I want to check their accuracy. Could you recommend me some mobile apps to check?
oh so that's what that is
I would like to have all the tools too, but I wouldn't have enough space for all that cool stuff😢
space is getting limited here 🙁
I'd sure like to win one of those pallet warmers, especially as I'm very much into Vostoks, so I'm used to those blobs of shellac and often wanted to do something about it. BTW, that's an impressive set of tools! Are you sure you're not a watchmaker? 😉
Thumbs up moment: 3:33.
What are good and relatively affordable tweezers, and where can one find them, preferably online and in EU?
I am at home Sick today but I managed to watch your video Mark. Let’s face it mate you just wanted to use that new mill in anger and who can blame you.
I found this very therapeutic and interesting.
Did I miss something or did you not say how people can enter to win the warmer?
Hope you're feeling better Mike. Yes - details in the next video.
This Old Watch Repair Channel :P
I get it 😀
Awesome stuff, hows the dial pad printer going? Any progress?
Still trying to source the right types of ink and thinner. Found a company in BKK but need to find time to visit them
@@WatchRepairChannel awesome cant wait!!
Since most don't have many of these advanced tools, it might be nice to show how a normal person would create one of these without all the advanced tools.
Is it true that regular manual winding of automatic or self-winding watches is bad for the parts inside the watch? Say you let a watch sit for a long time and you want to use the manual wind feature to get it going again--is it better to just gently shake the watch up a little? Or is it better to get a full wind going by using the crown? Thanks.
Excellent channel very interesting. Could you please answer a question I have a vintage rotary watch , with a 2824 movement it is running 15 seconds hour fast, could this be coused by magnetism. ? Thanks
yes it can. or contaminated hairspring.
@@WatchRepairChannel I wish you could service it for me, I tried to very gently take the movement out , by slightly undoing the two screw's , but it just turns around & won't come out of the case. The dial is slightly of center, my father had the movement serviced 10 years ago , but I just don't think they did a very good job!. I purchased a new Eta stem for it 401/3. I tried demagnetiser just making the movement run faster. Any thoughts thanks James
How long should it take a qualified watch maker to replace a NH35A movement and a new stem on a watch?
Perhaps an hour? I have never timed it.
Beautiful work and images! Btw, maybe someone in the comments can give me some advice on troubleshooting a mechanical watch. The wind up lasts less then half a day, otherwise it seems to be working fine. Can it be a problem with the main spring? Something else that can be causing these problems? I haven't opened it yet, as I'm waiting for the proper tools to arrive. It is an 80s Vostok watch, but not a Komandirskie or Amphibia, but a smaller, similar looking one of no obvious "line". It has no "market value" (no pun intended), but I like it, because it was my father's.
Hard to say does it stop in the same spot each time? Could be a few different things hard to tell you an answer with little info. Could be hands, minute wheel, hour wheel not having the correct washer or none at all, trash in the train, mainspring and so on. Sounds like it just needs to be taken apart and inspected if nothing visual is jumping out saying fix me! Most likely just needs COA
@@itsjustjeremy186 Thanks Jeremy! It stops at different times, similarly to when a watch hasn't been wound up in a while, just in this case, it is half a day. I guess I'll have to be patient and wait until the tools arrive. What is COA?
Everything Jeremy said. There's a lot of moving parts in an automatic watch and therefore there's a lot of factors which can cause issues. The only way to know for sure is a complete inspection.
@@WatchRepairChannel Thanks for the reply Mark! I'll be getting in some "taking it apart without knowing how to put it back together trouble" as soon as I get the tools.
can you point me to what lathe you are using?
Hi, are you able to replace a crown tube on a Seiko 7549-7010 and if so what would this cost?
He doesn't do work for private customers. Not worth his time.
@@echochambers8418 Cheers will do some research, I do most of my own watch repairs but thought this would be best done professionally by someone who has done it before, cant spot a Seiko crown tube on ebay though.
@@cmb1972 and you won't find one no where because they are not replaceable. I mean you could most likely pay to have someone make you one but it will cost more than the value of the watch. The seiko slim model 6309 diver have the same exact case as the 7549
I do apologise, I cannot take on work where I live right now.
Clickspring meets Watch repair channel??
I suspected the vostok watches might the terrible. I'll stick with the bucherer chronograph.
Thanks - Appreciate the comment
What do I think? That you've made an unnecessarily nice job of a simple item ... which is how it should be. :-)
A good excuse to play with toys
hahaa! I see you also got inspired by clickspring ;) :)
I'm not in his league
@@WatchRepairChannel you don't have to play in his league be to be good! ;)
Anyways, one clickspring is more than enough. Personally me, I enjoy your videos the way they are. Good music, delicate items/tools/watches and fascinating projects. :)
Your voice in that old clip sounds very different to how it sounds now.
Different microphone
I prefer to summon dark magic👻
Was that your wife's nail varnish you were using for the marking up?
It is layout dye.
Not her colour 😂
#660 Thumbs UP
If you need parts for Russian watches I can help with it
The only part you need for a Vostok is the furnace to melt that shit down. 🤣
😂🤣
L haha)) I have many amphibians - good watch for fishing and hunting
@pavel Thank you
It's not often enough that we see someone use The Force...
It's all around us
All this for a Vostok.... You might want to build some padding and apply them to your walls.😂
It's on order
With all your cool machining tools you need to build a watch from raw materials. You can give Roger Smith a run for his money.
I very much doubt that - but thank you
@@WatchRepairChannel George Daniels and Roger Smith worked to make British Watchmaking great again. You do your part too.
Thanks for all you do.

Could you make me a fancy razor?

I THINK TO MUCH WORK FOR A $60.00 WATCH BUY A NEW ONE FOR ME IS BETTER
Not just for this one watch - the tool can be re-used 😉
Why do you use such an ugly screw for such a woderfull tool???? Otherwise: "It looks prety good!"
It's what I had to hand.
