I don't understand why people pay him to open product when he takes zero care with the product and doesn't even give deals for being a patron anymore. I could get it cheaper at my lgs on day of release than rudy was offering to patrons. Laughable and truly degenerate
I remember being subbed to his patreon. I had set up a deal for a box of cards with him, but had to cancel due to financial issues. Rudy responds by banning me from the patreon all together, not even letting me pay him monthly for his "content". He wants the quick buck from his fans and doesn't give a shit beyond that, total wakeup call for me.

This video is a nice reminder of the volatility these packs have. I believe the data shows the avg value range per box is $50-$550

That’s a hell of an average.
You'd think 'maybe' if a company was selling a 'ultra premium' version of a product that they'd adjust the print run/ratio for it, so the overall EV (that they know exists bcuz of how they're pricing sealed products/selling Secret Flavors) is more inline with the product.
If MSRP (which they should have to have on a produce intended for retail store shelves) is $500 and the EV swing is 300-600 that'd be legit. 50-550 is pure gambling.
they don't remove the commons, fluff uncommons/rares, and ofc they continually water down mythics in regular boxes...so you still risk that in these.
I find this to be quite the BS. WotC doesn't want to get taxed as a company providing gambling services, and yet they design the products they sell as a 'geared to adults' and 'you could totally hit a big pull'. The game is supposed to be easy to access/play for both kids and adults: the $drunk price grab though means they've basically said 'screw the kids' and focused on milking $ from the adults. Never mind the complexity issues that make a real barrier to entry.
I'll continue to stick by Draft/Set boxes, and occasionally Collector boxes. These 'specialty set' ultra premium approaches are complete BS. The fact it is only 4pks instead of the regular collector 12pks is BS. The fact that they do this in a giant recession is just a reminder of the priority of the company: $ first: $ second, playability 7th, accessibility 8th, affordability 9th, transparency in business model/what product is 99th.

It's because of the curated slots. The borderless cards are from a specially-picked list, which is why there are so many repeating uncommons and rares.

so it really depends on what your price point is at when you purchase them and then how long you hold the cards for. personally I paid 250 a box so that comes to 2k for the case of 8 which turns out perfectly fine. also the long term potential growth of these cards and variants cannot be overlooked. and then some people buy them just to keep them sealed for a while. And finally even if everything you said was true, this is a card game and people take pleasure out of opening packs and having fun with the cards... everything can't solely be financial.

@@ivanfuchs2820 Totally agree with the end of your comment. Last year I bought 3 boxes of Kaladesh to go masterpiece hunting for my bday. The experience alone of anxiously hoping for a masterpiece in every pack opened, and then finally getting a Solemn Simulacrum, was worth it to me. It's worth more to me to say that I pulled that card myself and I didn't just order it online.

Let's see the real valor of this: Sucks = the cards don't pay the box; Okay = paid the box, but that's it; Awesome = small or medium profit(+); Impossibru! = insane profit

Overall, not a bad case. Box 3 and 8 are very bad, but Box 4, 6 and 7 handle the bad boxes. I would say it is an OKAY case.

I always enjoy opening at least one box of the newest premium set just for fun, even if it's not profitable. If I come close enough to even, I'm happy, and it plays out that way more often than not. However, Double Masters 2022 just felt so incredibly underwhelming. The price of the box was always in the back of my head as I cracked open $0.50 rares continuously. And only having 24 packs per box adds insult to injury. Wasn't even close to breaking even. I barely got back half of what the box cost. This really shouldn't happen with a brand new premium set. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I told myself I'm taking a very long break from buying new Magic products.
theres a bunch of bulk rares and the variance is very high in 2xm. u can either crack open a $100 pack or a $1 pack
If you can't afford collectors boxes just say that.
This set pretty much got me to decide to sell my entire modern MTG collection and just focus on buying reserved list. I don't even really play anymore and WotC's greed has motivated me to spend my mtg money elsewhere. Think about it: for the price of a trash booster box you could pick up a Grim Monolith or a Wheel of Fortune and see the value increase over time.

Keep in mind the intended price for these boxes is $230....and no folks, it is not "supply and demand" driving the prices up. It is reseller greed just as everyone has seen with new gaming system releases over the last few years. A lot of people are sitting on an enormous amount of this product hoping it will follow the trajectory of Double Masters. After the second wave hit last week (the one everyone is in denial happened) the price of collector boxes retraced to $300 a box. Even at those prices, it is not flying off the shelves. The market is saturated.
I love MtGs new art direction with borderless everything and floating text and foils and etched and whatnot. It's neat! Some stuff doesn't land as well, but I'd rather bad art than no art, and man, MtG art is :chefskiss:

@@therogueduelist5504 Patron here, it was $2399 out the door for the collector case of 8. I personally would never sign up for a video opening because I’d rather open it myself and not have to wait until a month after release when a lot of prices have tanked. Sold my foil borderless seal for $268. They’re down like $100 from that point. I opened 1 draft box and decided I was never going to do that well on future DM22 boxes, and to hell with volatility on the collectors.
Still not bad considering what these cards will be in a year or more. Once the supply dries up and the demand goes up, they will start approaching their presale prices. Just like any investment, you're not guaranteed a big return instantly. Plus, there are a lot of those uncommons that'll gradually bump up in price as people bling out and upgrade their decks. I think it's still way too early to see what these boxes and cards will actually stabilize at once the supply is gone.
Not sure if the rest of your viewers or other newer viewers would agree with me. But, I just started watching your videos within the last month or so and have really enjoyed them.. Your knowledge, info, and personality really make them fun and interesting to watch. However, I sometimes forget your channel name and whatnot and just figured out from this video, that I rely on your thumb nails to tell me if I want to watch the video and generally a thumbnail with your face in it will tell me I found a video I want to watch more then say an image of a product. That being said maybe the majority of this video's views came from seeing the product. I bring this up because the majority of the TCG content that YT tries to get me to watch features mostly cringey dudes that I have a hard time listening too or watching. I pretty much watch you and Kitchen Table TCG. That's about it. Being someone who seems to love data points, I figured I would give you this one for free. Keep up the fun content, glad I found your channel.

For a 332 card set I am seeing too many of the same commons, uncommons, rares and mythics being pulled out of the collectors boxes. There are way too many repeats. I am not seeing too many big hits from the draft booster either.
A 332 card set with 660 cards. Between standard, standard foil, borderless, borderless foil, foil-etched, and textured foil, there's up to six copies of some of these cards. Even if you restrict the foil cards to just foil-etched & textured, that's still four copies of a handful, three copies of a lot of cards, and two of others.
Compound that with the fact that you're getting 4 borderless common/uncommon cards plus 1-2 borderless rare/mythic, and not every card has a borderless version, yeah, there's a ton of overlap in these.
The set breakdown may *say* it's 91 commons, 80 uncommons, 120 rares (seriously? more than either C or U?), and 40 Mythics, but you actually have 101 each of common/uncommon, 270 rare, and 105 Mythic, that's going to be a huge skew.

As someone who's opened an irresponsible amount of this set, the variance is extreme however overall this set is still over performing. I never pay attention to preorder prices because the premarket is rarely accurate. Collector boosters are definitely gambling compared to the draft boosters. Regardless you're always taking chances when you buy sealed product.
I might have had extra bad luck, but I opened 3 draft boosters and 4/5 of the highest market rate cards were tokens. In all, I spent 55 and got about $16 in value.
Much lower stakes than collectors, but still pretty big gamble from my limited sample. Is it worth trying again?

Rudy the price of Double Masters is low because many people believe that the house of cards will crumble. There are too many foils and special variations nowadays and everyone has fatigue. Nothing is special anymore. You think in 10 years people will care about Variation #37 Emrakul foil? Something you can't even easily search for on tcg because there are 20 different ultra omega special foil versions? A lot of people don't think so. Who knows though, only time will tell. But that's how many people feel.
i think the opposite is true - the value for the "base" card holds, and the rarer variants do have additional value to collectors simply because the option is there. In my experience what typically happens is the more common variants prices stabilize while the rarer variants values continue to rise as the number of listings inevitably decreases.

Man, I just googled double master collectors and checked if I wanted to fuck around and open these and saw every card including imperial seal foil etched "has to be few hundred" is now barely above 99$.........i hate wotc

Why do people buy packs? I can just buy the complete set in singles for 1/3rd the price, scramble up the cards into different piles face down, and pretend I'm opening packs from each pile.
Some amazing cards in this case but wow you need some serious hits to even break even here the prices are high. Got a draft box and had some insane hits including borderless mana vault but still barely broke even. Some packs are loaded but just as many had double bulk rares.
I cracked two draft boxes and one collector box. The only noteworthy cards are a regular Dockside, a regular Phyrexian Altar, a foil regular Emrakul and an extender foil Allosaurus. Sooo many bulk rares and mythics. Not a single T's Protection or Smothering Titties or City of Ass. Complete disappointment. But hey, that's the gamble I guess.
Yeah.. but singles. Better yet buy chinese proxies. Can get everything I want for like $50.

I don't know anything about magic. But how is opening these packs any worse than the degenerate gamblers that scratch dozens of lottery tickets every week or even every day. At least with magic you've got something left when you're done. Unlike lottery tickets that you just throw away. And with cards you've still got the possibility of losers turning into winners in the future.
What you stand to gain. A 5 dollar scratch off is usually top prize of like 25k. Whereas, I got 6 of these packs for about 80 dollars and pulled about 4 dollars of value. Yes, that's something, but, ya know...

Too many collectors (because they've been getting pandered to NONSTOP for years) means that actual players can't even afford the cards. Nevermind they started dropping like 10 sets a year because why? COLLECTORS. Players were fine with 3x release a year + core set or reprint set every 2.

Anyone else noticing that 75% of these collector pks are terrible considering the price per pk? And Rudy is never ever gonna call that out. 1pk in a nearly 400$ product where you can possibly break even on the pk. This kind of garbage is exactly what will drive away customers and long time players, not good. And being dishonest about the value just makes it way worse.

magic the gathering got me into gambling at age 12. Luckily since my funds were limited and I was a skinny small kid, I was forced to become a good trader. Early on, during the early days of the 56k internet I learned that it was always best to "trade up" to increase your top end value. I practised my decks daily on apprentice/mIRC, the precursor to magic online.
I finished playing at 20. At 27 I sold my rarities for $7k at 35% value to a store with a fresh cheque. The store owner was excited to get such a NM old school card lot. I had sorted through 5k cards to find my best to sell... it was like walking through memories. That set of duels and mana drains were a good investment, but I got them to play with.
I spent the money on a single summer of Calgary stampede getting drunk as much as possible. I barely remember it. I had a great time though. I also completed my teenage dream of finally being able to score multiple times with good looking cow girls.

100% gambling. Buying the chase cards requires market knowledge to not buy them at the peak of hype/meta prevalence, but to a seasoned collector who knows how to play those curves it's definitely the way to make a more stable investment...
But the casual player who buys one pack and pulls a $300 card is still going to see bigger ROI much faster.

I feel ya. I traded a rhystic study for a damnation a couple years ago, just to open a full art version last month worth a big $18 instead of $40. Happy to have a 2nd one, dont get me wrong... but i would rather have that study back.
You can see the cuts where he switched out to pre-opened packs after each box zip opening. Rudy can't get one past this Taco Bell patron.
