Great video! I'm going to put one of these on my Christmas list! Nothing like a high-tech, state-of-the-art smoker whether you're camping or just weekend on the back deck.
Also recently got one of these Davey Crockett smokers from GMG and it's the VERY BEST SMOKER I have ever used!! So easy and end product is amazing. Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, all have been awesome. Only thing I would add is that the manual says to NOT ADJUST TEMP UNTIL THE START UP TEMP REACHES 150. Aside from that, great video and thanks for sharing.
Excellent video Patrick. I've had the same model for about 2 years. i went to pellets a few years ago looking for the set it and forget as you described and GMDC has certainly stood the test. Remarkably stable grate surface temps when compared to the Traeger which was OK at best when it worked. Again thank you as there's not a lot out there about the GMDC
Iv had my for just about a year now, Love it do a lot of camping n I must say it’s the center of attention with the other campers. Rids , tritip , porkbutt beef tenderloin steaks ect au name it, This GM does it sell . Love WiFi setting , don’t half to get up to check it , now is that lazy are what , have to get off my butt to spray some apple juice or whatever . Now n then , Now go out n Get a GM best money I’ve ever spent
Your wrapping technique leaves a lot to be desired. I recommend the extra heavy duty and larger Reynolds Food Service Foil No. 632, available on Amazon and other places. This foil is larger in dimensions and much thicker. Proper wrapping technique does not require a double wrap even for a big pork butt. Also, it is great for wrapping the grease pan on the Davy Crockett, making clean up a lot easier.
I have the model with the 2 plates with holes for grilling works well. with the bucket that little tab it sits on give it a twist with a flat head screw driver, it will hold the bucket in place better. have done heaps of pulled pork's they come out perfect every time.
I am really impressed with this so far. It has been so easy to use, easy to clean up and it has done a great job keeping a consistent heat throughout the day
Nice video. You were honest and straight forward arbor the davey crockett grill. I think I'm gonna order one. You should do an update on how it's holding up. Thanks again
@@TravelswithDelaney I went and put one on lay by yesterday. But $840 Aus. We get hit with the pay us more stick here. Traeger bronson I liked too. I can't wait to cook up some pulled pork like you do kindly showed haha.
Nice review. Do you still use the smoker? A couple of suggestions. As a rub, 50-50 kosher salt and freshly ground (big flakes) black pepper. Put it on thick. When you shred, you'll disperse throughout. The pepper is really nice. A Texas thing. Second: brine a turkey breast overnight. Cook at about 225. It will cook slow initially, then temperature will rise rather quickly towards the end. Takes may be 2 to 2.5 hr. Slice a couple of sweet potatoes in half and stick them to the side. Still working this one out, but smoked sweet potatoes is excellent!
We do use the smoker and love it! I did a dry brine on a turkey for Thanksgiving this year and it turned out wonderful. My uncle did a wet brine for our Christmas turkey and it also was wonderful.
After using my pellet grill for years and going thru umpteen bags of pellets I now throw the meat into the oven after wrapping if possible. Pellets last much longer now.
Thats what I did on my very first try. I did a Lamb roast and it wasn`t quite to the medium pink I like-finished it in the oven for 20 min at 350. Came out perfect with a nice smoke ring and excellent flavor. Works really well-thx for the post!
good job fyi i use my shop vac to clean the ash out it works grate i got a small one that goes on a 5gal pal from home dept.we take it in your 5th wheel all the time
Very well done video! How long does it take the grill to get to 240 degrees once you start it? How long to get to 500 degrees? Also, you mentioned that it keeps a fairly consistent temperature. How much can it fluctuate throughout a low and slow cook?
Thank you! I honestly haven't timed it but now I will have to do that. My guess is around 10-15 minutes to go get up to 225. I have not seen more than a 5 degree variance when cooking.
Thanks Todd! That smoker works great! Not sure I can get enough meat on it for a TWD Meetup. We may need to do a Runaway Roses/TWD private meetup for that! LOL
Greg Ridge The grill holds 9 lbs of pellets and uses very little per hour of use. I’ve cooked ribs, steaks, and chicken wing in it so far and maybe used 2 lbs of pellets
Great video for one shopping for pellet grill. I'll watch again when it comes time to smoke/grill. My concern is simple movement without lifting 68 lbs.; from a covered porch to an outside stoop. I want to use a utility cart and the dimensions of the feet would help in choosing one. It may appear most stated dimensions use the included side wire shelf for length. Does anyone know just the dimensions of feet L x W?
I notice you don't show folding the legs up to use as the carrying handle. While this unit is much smaller than regular smokers, it's still very heavy. When the legs are folded up to use as a carrying handle, moving it around isn't to bad. But moving it, to being on those legs, to the up position is a bear because there is only one small handle on the pellet bin side and the unit is wicked heavy. The app looks great but I can't get it to connect to the smoker or the smoker to it so useless to me. But using it in manual mode is easy enough and while heavy, it can be taken camping much easier that needing a toy hauler for a full size smoker.
Hello ! It's just about that time again to smoke/cook something again, right ? Don't forget to share it with us all we'll be waiting😀😀 thanks again...😎
Pork shoulder and pork butt is the same cut of pork. If it’s sliced they call it country style ribs. It’s basically the shoulder blade of the pig. The back side of a pig is called ham. 😉
I have used mustard before as well and I had always cooked with the fat side up. I saw this technique on RUclips and decided to try it. It seemed to work well.
Nice demo! Two questions. 1. Did you research other smokers? why this one? and, 2. It sounded bit noisy, is that a potential campground issue? (So that's question 1a and 1b, and question 2.)
I did a little research and looked at several different ones. I really like this one since it was portable to give us the option to take it camping with us. I honestly could have gotten a full size Pit Boss for about the same price right now at Rural King but I really liked the tailgater option. Also, I had seen on Amazon a comment where someone complained there's wasn't working right and Green Mountain actually responded and then the customer did a follow up saying they had replaced his unit and the new one was working fine. That is the level of customer service I love and so that was actually a tipping point reading that. 2. It sounds noisier on our porch than it actually is in a campground. I was worried about that but honestly when we had it at the state park two weeks ago, you could barely hear it outside of our site.
Thanks. It's just me, so the smaller size is nice for home and camping. The next time you're in VT, try Winhall Brook Corp of Eng. campground Rt. 100 near Stratton Mtn. Nice spot.
Very informative, thanks! I’ve read a few reviews complaining that the Davy Crockett isn’t all that durable. After all your smokes have you come across any issues or has it been reliable?
Have you tried the traeger Ranger? Does the DC hold set temp? My traeger scout can be set at 180 and shoot up to 370. And when I set it at 225 it goes well over 400.
Excellent review. You just might have a new reason to put the T@B on the road . Doing the BBQ circuit. PS: don’t forget the Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce.
How do you clean out the ash bucket? Shop vac? If its not able to lift out and dump.... how would you cook a 2nd, 3rd or 4th day..... bring a shop vac?
I used the shop vac. You could scoop most of it out with a plastic cup or something. I smoked 3 times in a row before I cleaned it out. There is very little ash left in this smoker.
3rd time to try a comment may be the charm. 1st attempts my battery died. 2nd attempt I got a phone call. Ok. Here goes. Nice smoker and it is smaller than our Traeger. We are wondering how you fit all your camping gear into your 4 Runner and under your 400 bed area. We have a Toyota Tacoma and fill our truck bed up with gear. The back seat is reserved for our 2 dogs. Also, what type of gray water container do you use? We had a large one, but it was too high to drain the gray tank.
We save the back seat as well for Truman. For the bigger trips, we do use our Thule Room Container which gives us more space. Also, what we actually need to carry varies from trip to trip. For instance, the Turkey Run Trip, we took the smoker but we didn't need a generator or solar panel since it was just a weekend trip with electric hookups. For the big summer trips, we will take a generator, solar panel, etc but we definitely won't have room for the smoker on that type of trip. I had a small 5 gallon blue tank that I used for the grey water but I never used it this summer so I quit carrying it. I found the 5 gallon bucket that I carry beside the propane tank works just fine for taking water out of the grey tank.
If you go to the earth science website you can get open box for 2:58 you can get regular price to 78 but were the $10 coupon to 68 free shipping I cannot believe this Green Mountain Grills is not playing their competitive and aggressive very good the only thing missing is free supply of brisket pork butt chicken I think they got to give out coupons for that and also lifetime supply of pellets I think they could do a good job finishing those to the customer you know the customer is always right so feel free to send me my lifetime supply of various flavors of pellets I would appreciate it thank you very much
Great video, wanted to be there for a taste testing. 2 comments: 1. You made hands hurt the way you picked the meat out of the smoker, get some gloves man. 2. I am impressed with how you handled that 9 pound pork butt with a pair of toughs and did not drop it. Keep on smoking on down the road.
Whats up guys You rock love yea both. Doing some research on the GMG Davy Crockett and you guys make great videos. Do you like it? has it held up over time and usage? Thanks for sharing this with us. Drew
Thanks Papa Drew! We are still loving our Davy Crockett. We have had it for a year and half now. It still works great and has held up well. We use it quite a bit here at home. Its so easy to use and the meats we smoke in it come out so good.
Been wanting a smoker for years and I am looking to finally take the plunge. I am completely new to all of this and been researching all day and then decided to narrow my search on best pellet smoker for beginners. This one came up in the list and has piqued my interest. Would you recommend this for a newbie? Can one buy something to raise it up? Other smokers I like are too expensive. 800 dollars and up. Perhaps those are more for the serious smokers and may last longer? Which model do you recommend? So difficult to decide on this.
I’ve had ours now for a year and a half and love it. This model, the Davy Crockett, is the portable one so it’s smaller and does set lower. I think the Daniel Boone is the next size up and sets higher at more of a grill height. I know it costs more but not sure how much more.
@@TravelswithDelaney HI! Thanks for responding. I came across the Daniel Boone upon further research. I am on the fence on which one to get. But, hey, at least I finally made a decision on which brand to go with. Happy that your Davy Crockett is still giving you great food! Thanks!
How do you clean out the ash bucket at camp when its full? How many days can you go without cleaning? I've heard its not removable. A shop vac in while camping? Thanks.
I smoked 3 times in a row before I cleaned it out the last time. There honestly is very little ash left even after smoking for many hours. Shop vac is the easiest way but you could just scoop it out with plastic cup or someone like that.
Loved the video but I was a little concerned that you would have to eat all of the pulled pork by yourself (and of course Patty would help) so my suggestion would be to make sure you have a professional present at all smoke events that can closely monitor the pork consumption. I am officially confirming that I am such a professional so feel free to contact me when the need arises. I was just wondering ..... would it perform as well in different locations?? I am officially confirming that I am offering a different location where you can perform such experiments.
We’ve had ours about a year and a half. No issues with the auger. I make sure I clean the thermostat sensor every time I use it otherwise the temperatures can be off
I'm curious. Since it's called a tailgater does it have a way to plug it into your car? I guess you would need an inverter for that. Also how much does the smell of the smoker penetrate your car? It looked delicious. 4R rubs are my favorite too.
It comes with the 110 plug, the 12v plug so you can plug into your car's cigarette lighter and it also comes with battery clips if you want to plug it directly onto a battery. We didn't notice the smell at all coming home from Turkey Run State Park.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'm a witness!! What a great demo, Patrick!! 👍👍 I did mean to ask you - what was the price of the pellets, and since that's the same bag we used at Turkey Run, did you get 3 "smokes" out of it then? Also - do they make liners for that drip pail? or could you line it with foil for easier cleanup? Thanks, my friend! Safe & smokey travels 😂 see you #ondowntheroad! 💜
That 28# bag was $29 on Amazon. They seem a bit high compared to others. I bought a 20# bag of Lumber Jack brand this weekend at Rural King for $8.99. I will see how they do compared to the more expensive Green Mountain Brand. And I think I still have enough from that first bag for another 4 hour smoke
Menards sells a good brand of pellets for a pellet grill $18 for 40 lbs. Walmart is about the same. The best price I've found. For Green Mountain brand, check around your local area for a dealer. I get 28 lb bags for $15 at a local dealer for Green Mountain products.
Question - after wrapping the pork butt in foil, does the smoke from pellets actually permeate thru foil? If not, would it be prudent to save pellets (cost?) for future use and finish the meat in low oven (assuming home or have in camper)? Per your suggestion Patrick, we are looking forward to getting the DC smoker (appropriate since we live in TN ;- } for our holiday turkey! BTW, our favorite bbq place in western NC is Haywood Smokehouse and they make a Japple (jalepeno /apple) sauce that is awesome on pork (www.haywoodsmokehouse.com/)
I suppose you could finish it in the oven on low temperature. You are probably right that you won't get smoke once its wrapped in the foil. FYI - You won't be able to do a large turkey on the Davy Crockett. My guess is 12-15 pounds at most. If you are wanting to do a bigger bird, you would probably want to go with a bigger grill such as the Daniel Boone. That sauce sounds amazing!! We will have to meetup again next year and do some smoking together. Cal and I will have fun feeding everyone with smoked meats.
Way to make my mouth water! Wow that looks so good! Your demos are always interesting and helpful. Thanks Patrick!
Thanks Kris!

Patrick, great and informative video. How long does the hopper of pellets last? Not fair you teased us with tasting the meat, lol
It went about 4 hours before I added more. There is a point in the hopper where when it gets so low you’re suppose to fill it up before it runs out.
How "set and forget" is this thing? Looks like a great rig
Only thing I have to do is check the hopper to make sure it doesn’t run out of pellets. And that’s only every couple of hours or more.
@@TravelswithDelaney well you've convinced me. I'm buying one!
The Davy crockett seems to make a noise every so often. Maybe a fan or auger? Know what that sound is and how often it does it?
Its the fan and the auger. The fan helps to fuel the fire and the auger keeps the pellets going in when needed.
I need one of those!
It is awesome Adam!

Thanks!
How many pellets did you go through for that?
If only you were free to travel this coming weekend...we're going to be trying out some more meats! LOL
Chris Forrest, LOL
Do you have any issues with temp variations? I want this one . Do you have any issues with the pellet auger clogging? Thanks I hope to have one soon.
Put the bone in the freezer and give it to your dog on a hot summer day., my lab loves them !
Thats a great idea! Thanks for the tip.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'm a witness!! What a great demo, Patrick!! 👍👍
I did mean to ask you - what was the price of the pellets, and since that's the same bag we used at Turkey Run, did you get 3 "smokes" out of it then?
I guess my invitation got lost in the mail? Looked good!
LOL! It was very good and we were able to put quite a bit in the freezer for later this winter.
How many times did you have to fill the pellet hopper?
I just filled it once during the 6-8 hours of smoking.
👍
Could you fit a whole brisket on it?
Ethan Baker I believe you could. It would fill up the whole grill.
10lbs filled mine to capacity.
Was going to order through your store but it says "no longer available."
I know you can still get them on Amazon and at authorized dealers.
That looks great! Can I ask how many pounds of pellets did you use on this cook?
Bill Dobberpuhl I’d say close to 8-9 pounds of pellets were used. The hopper holds 9# according to the specs.
550 max temp
Dude it’s always fat side up do you want that juice to run down through the meat while cooking.
I wished your voice would be stronger. You have a soft voice
His voice is fine. Check your volume or possibly your ears.
