      I think they work very well and I concur with you and Pete that it was wise to make them two separate albums. Feral Roots is my favorite album but I have not decided where they fall in the entire catalog yet. I do know that I like Darkbringer more but still need to give Lightbringer more spins.

    First of all I've got to come clean and admit that Rival Sons is my current favorite rock band. Their album "Feral Roots" for me, is THE album of the 21st century thus far. "Lightbringer" arrived here last week. This album is a roller coaster in that it starts out like the initial upward climb of the typical wooden coaster. After that, get ready for deep exiting drops, twists and turns. You can never guess what notes or musical phrasing is coming right around the corner. Since Rival Sons is my favorite band and I count on their wonderfulness while anticipating their next album ventures, I can say that while "Lightbringer" doesn't beat out "Feral Roots", it doesn't disappoint in any way, shape, or form. In fact, it's a thrill!

    • @DavysFlicks
      @DavysFlicks 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah - who's the winner between these two and Feral Roots? WE THE FANS, for not having to choose! Cheers!

      Hey Davy. I did choose between Feral Roots and the Rival Sons two new albums. I'm not a very religious individual. That said, Feral Roots to me, reminds me of that gigantic Christ the Redeemer statue that stands high on the Corcovado Mountain overlooking all of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and seeming to say, "Go ahead, try and beat the glory of this vision." It's almost impossible to do that from my vantage point. If any band can accomplish such a feat, then it would likely be Rival Sons. I will have to endure the agonizing anticipation of Rival Sons next record to see if Feral Roots could be toppled as the king of the mountain! @@DavysFlicks

    Saw Rival Sons in Vienna last night, all thanks to Pete for introducing them to me. Jay said completing Mosaic was the most fulfilled he had felt as an artist. And they DID play it at the end. Before then asking the crowd do you want one more. Yes says the crowd. So Keep On Swinging was the finale.

      Cool - i was at the same show yesterday. We had the pleasure of getting the band in halloween costumes. Great show, only bummer was they didn't really play another encore and security seemed eager to drive the people out of the hall pretty quickly. And I was slightly surprised they didn't play "Mercy". At least I think so. Would love to have a full setlist of Vienna.

    For what it's worth, I dig Rival Sons a lot and I'm loving both albums released this year. They seem to be expanding their sound beyond just hard rock and blues rock and that's a good thing (but it still rocks). There was a time when this band would've been huge and all over the radio, but unfortunately modern day radio stations aren't touching it or much of anything that's rock oriented. If I didn't watch Sea of Tranquility, I probably wouldn't know about them. Waterloo Records didn't have any copies of Lightbringer in stock so I had to special order it.

    Great show guys. I fell in love with Rival Sons after hearing their EP back in 2010. They are definitely the best 'newish' hard rock band on the planet. I'm still absolutely flabbergasted that they are not huge? Feral Roots still stands as my favorite album but Dark fighter is a close second with Lightbringer siting in third spot. 10 out of 10. Or five out of five from me. Brilliant stuff 👍

    My ranking is letter ranking. Before the Fire-B. Pressure and Time-A. EP A. Head Down A+. Great Wester Valkyrie Classic meaning perfect. Hollow Bones B-. Feral Roots-A. Darkfighter A -. Lightbringer A+.
    Love all the songs on Lightbringer is Darkfighter is A+. Mercy -A. Redemption-A+. Sweetlife A+. Before the fire-A +. Mosaic- A +. Sweetlife is the most Rival Sons song they have ever put out. Its like they listened to themselves to create this song.

      Wow that's almost exactly what I think! There is only one song by the Sons I'm not a fan of; Rich and the Poor. The lyrics on that one I find odd. Still the music is good on that and the quality of Jay's vocals. But Manifest Destiny, Destination on Course, and Darfighter are my three favorites.

When all is said and done, that run of 3 releases (and who knows what will come next) will be remembered as some of the strongest works in the decade in terms of rock n' roll. And the show I saw in Paris last Friday was just goddamn epic to boot as well!

    I do really really like these guys as they are very tight, great songwriting and stunning singing. However, I dislike that guitar solo sound. I am not a fan of massive fuzz and octave or harmony effects on every solo. I would much prefer a plugged directly into a loud guitar amp solo for every track.

  • @independenceltd.

    I dig it, but don't think it's as good as "Darkfighter". I might put this at the bottom end of their catalog, along with "Hollow Bones" and "Before the Fire". But that means it's still a 4/5. If you don't know RS then these two albums are a great starting pt.

  • @wolf1977

    The 'other end' of Lightbringer. I like both about the same, which is to say they're both very good. Vocalist Jay Buchanan about the album: "'Darkfighter' is a new RIVAL SONS, and 'Lightbringer' is the clear definition of what we are now. We broke ground on 'Darkfighter', but 'Lightbringer' is a step beyond the personal innovation and exploration. It goes a little further. We really took everything into our own hands and pushed to see how far we could go. It was a self-exploration to see who we were and who we'll be now. We had more friction and compromise than ever, because we isolated the bare essence of where we needed to go - and then we went there." Not sure it's quite THAT groundbreaking but I do like it quite a bit.
    Comparisons are drawn to Kings Of Leon (and Coldplay...?). Nice dynamics & mix of rockers with slower numbers, solid songs, even some Country influences. "Dark Fighter" opens the album & is the proggy 9 minute opus, "Redemption" & "Mosaic" are fine ballads, and "Sweet Life" a more uptempo/driving rocker. "Before The Fire" is also the name of their debut album. Wonderful melodic hooks throughout. Easily a 4 out of 5 stars for me - maybe a little higher (with more listens - only had it since the 21st), ranks right near the top of their discography with Great Western Valkyrie & Head Down

    Such an underrated band-- thanks so much for flying the flag for them, Pete and Davy. As an American hard rock fan, it's actually embarrassing to me that Rival Sons is not more well-known and popular in the U.S. They seem to be quite popular in England and across Europe, from what I've seen and heard, but they *should* be huge in their home country too. It's truly a shame that they are still a cult band here after so many years.

    Great record, but the artwork on the record makes it look like a knock off, i had to double-check online to ensure what I received wasn't a fake. They should have revised the imaging on the name, track names & the lyrics in the booklet as they are all terribly difficult to read. Too much bloom in that light, guys. A little darkness would have helped, but other than the packaging, the material of the album was terrific, Jay bringing his vocal prowess to the fore once more & some beautiful & fiery work from Scott.

    • @JIF882
      @JIF882 9 месяцев назад

      Because GVF has always had the majorish label push. I use "ish" because they aren't signed to Atlantic directly. They signed to an Atlantic subsidiary called Lava. Rival Sons is almost there. Before the release of Feral Roots, Rival Sons moved from the U.K based Earache to Atlantic Records. As I predicted, Atlantic is putting RS in more stores. I found both Dark Fighter and Lightbringer at my local Barnes & Noble. Interestingly, B&N didn't put a lot of copies of the new Rolling Stones cd in their store
