I had the pleasure of being in a band that opened for Jay's previous group, Buchanan. He is a phenomenal vocalist and a helluva nice guy. Couldn't be happier for him!

I had never heard of Rival Sons until just over a year ago when I was listening to an interview with Mollie Marriott, Steve's daughter. In passing she mentioned them and told how when she met singer Jay Buchanan, she told him she couldn't believe how much his singing reminded her of her father. He responded "I'm sorry Mollie, I don't know who your father is!!" Hard to believe, but he made up for it with the great tribute to Steve in Rival Son's version of "Black Coffee". Even the closing riffs sound like Small Faces "Come on Children". I now love this "modern" band and own their entire catalog.

They are the best Rock band out there and could stand up with any of the classic bands from the 70's. I stumbled upon them a few months back and couldn't believe any band of this caliber would exist today. I immediately bought five of their albums and there was not a bad one in the bunch! If they had come out in the 70's they would be up there with Zeppelin.

I got into Rival Sons through Hollow Bones and then discovered Feral Roots..
Feral Roots gave me faith in modern rock music again. A legit incredible album, and only to be owned on vinyl. The artwork is incredible!
Saw them supporting Sabbath and seeing them support Aerosmith next year.

Hey Pete, thanks for covering the mighty Rival Sons. Currently my favorite band on the planet. Although they haven't yet released a physical live album they did release the ' live at download paris' a couple of years ago on download only. As you can imagine, it's a bloody good listen and well recommended. Here's my rankings: 1. Feral Roots 2. Head Down 3. Hollow Bones 4. Great Western Valkyrie 5. Pressure and Time 6. Before The Fire. Also a big shout out for their amazing E.P. 👍

It’s quite strange to think that in a year’s time a ‘newer band’ like Rival Sons will have been around as long as Led Zeppelin were in existence.

  • @GrahamS67

YES!YES!YES! I've been waiting for this one. This actually made me laugh out loud because almost word for word it was like I was listening to myself talking to anyone that would listen ever since my brother-in-law sent me a link to the pressure and time video. Without doubt the best touring band at the moment. I first saw them live supporting my all time favourite band Deep Purple, and saw them twice last year. Can't wait till the next gig. Pretty much would have the order except I actually prefer "Head down" (surprised you didn't mention the wonderful "Jordan"btw) to "Hollow bones" but it's such small margins as to be irrelevant. "Feral roots" though? oh my word zero flaws on that album. Can't wait till you do a top 20 songs vid. Keep talking about Rival Sons though, the world needs to know.

These guys are one of the best if not one of the best newer bands for rock/hard rock blues, wicked drumming, and wicked guitar work, great vocals, excellent bass, all around very versatile band, a band like this should be huge, but today people don't buy music, as much as prior to the Limewire, Napster disaster for bands, and or the music industry in general or the record companies too.

Pete, you are dead on target with this review of their catalog. I absolutely love this band. Whatever order you put these records, you're in for a treat. Saw them last year and they are for real. When Feral Roots came out in February 2019, there was no doubt in my mind it would be the album of the year, it was, and is my fave of the catalog. It is a culmination of their career to date. Well stated.
I came in at Great Western. I caught them on the download festival on VH1 or AXS. Played 4 or 5 songs. They were wedged between Jane's Addiction and Rammstein. I immediately went to my online streamer and started listening. Been a huge fan and tell anyone who will listen to check them out.
I tell everyone they are near to Led Zeppelin at Physical Graffitti and Presence. They are the best band going right now. I really like The Struts and Greta Van Fleet, but Rival Sons tower above them.

Awesome review Pete. Have been absolutely hooked on Rival Sons for the past several months. They are the best rock band on the planet in my opinion...and if they were around in the 1970s..they would be on the same level of popularity as Zeppelin. I'm a young'n (29) so I missed out on the golden era of Rock & Roll and have discovered the greats many years after their heyday was long gone. Being that I prefer the rock of the 60s and 70s it's been very discouraging in the modern music world as most of the music that's been popular throughout my life has not connected with me at all. The only 2 bands that have really made me excited about new music have been Mastodon and Rival Sons. I've been a fan since the Pressure and Time album and I whole heartedly agree with you. They bring everything that's great about classic rock but offer it in a fresh way that doesn't feel derivative. They pay tribute to their influences without ripping them off and it's a breath of fresh fucking air as I feel like I'm suffocating under the weight of the otherwise bland and almost no-existent modern rock scene.

Thank you so much for this video. Rival Sons is terrific and there are many other bands (Kadavar, Graveyard, Witchcraft, Spell, Siena Root, Radio Moscow) releasing the various forms of 70s classic rock genres and receiving little to no commercial recognition. Your channel is awesome.

Pete, I completely agree 100% with everything you said about Rival Sons. Depending on the day, I may put Great Western Valkyrie as number 1 above Feral Roots, but it's a close call. This is because it's the album I played to death when it first came out and the songs are just so memorable. Otherwise, your album choices are spot on. It's interesting you likened Jay to Paul Rodgers. I never made the comparison on record until I saw them live on the Hollow Bones tour. If you think Jay's voice is great on record, live he will blow you away. I remember thinking that he has to have one of the greatest voices ever, up there with Paul Rodgers. So, I know I must have a correct comparison now you have said it! Also, Scott is an amazing guitar player live. I cannot praise Rival Sons highly enough. Totally unique with their own modern sound but channelling the great rock of late 60's/early 70's. As you say, I can't believe they're not bigger. I saw them at Billy Bobs Texas in Fort Worth and it wasn't as full as I expected. But what a show they put on.

Hello Pete, I'm a fan of your work. Can you do a video talking of your best studio cover songs? Here, my best 3:
    1. America (Yes)

Supposed to have seen them next month but like everything else that show is postponed. Hopefully see them later in the year. Their EP is another great album. The song Radio has a very Zeppelin feel. Get What's Coming another great track. People listen to Pete about this band. Jay & Scott have the potential to be the next Plant & Page, Tyler & Perry etc.

I bought Feral Roots on your recommendation (best of the year album) and it's a real grower, so want to get the rest. I'm just having to adjust to the production I suppose: not much head room to crank it up and it doesn't sound like it's been recorded live in a room, which is kinda what I expected from this kind of music. But I agree, they should be massive.

Love this band - best in many many years. I don't actually own a single cd, but I have made a couple of great playlist of all my fave songs from them that I purchased from I-Tunes. Sugar on the Bone - what a song! Really looking forward to their next album and finally getting a chance to see them when bands are back on the road. Though I love Tied Up, I'm not a fan of the material on Hollow Bones... It feels too stilted and sounds too cold and harsh to the rest of their stuff for me.

I'd really like to see a top 10 songs for these guys too! These guys and BCC are my go-to for new (ish) music. I have listened to them fervently since I discovered them on the Head Down video "Keep On Swinging". I have all of their albums and EPs studio & live. I also have some live bootlegs I'm going to through in. Starting out at the bottom, which is still literally ranked higher than most band's highest-ranked album for me.--->
    10) Hollow Bones-> I felt like this one was rushed a bit. I still found a lot to like on here.
    09) Live@ The Roxy 06/12/09-> A great show from their 1st tour w/ some songs from the soon to be released eponymous EP. If they'd have played Sacred Tongue on here I would have ranked it higher.
    08) Live From Haybale Studios-> Too short to rank it higher but, there are some killer moments on here.
    07) Rival Sons-> Just six songs on here, a couple of which aren't in my daily rotation.
    06) Feral Roots-> Great album. I just have some serious favorites on the first few albums.
    05) Live@ Download Paris 2016-> Killer live set!
    04) Head Down-> So tough to put this out of my top 3. Next month it could be #1.
    03) Pressure & Time (redux)-> Another album that has been my #1 at some point & could return to that spot if the mood strikes me.
    02) Before the Fire-> There are a couple of songs on here that are so good that this album can never drop out of my top 3. Love this one!
    01) The Great Western Valkerie-> I felt like this is my #1 because I was so obsessed with this one when it came out that I played it on a loop for about three months and I still like every song. I haven't gotten fatigued with subsequent replays. Honestly, if I go for a while without hearing it and I put it on, it's like the first time I heard it again. You forget how good it really is. They really took a leap in their development on this disc and the production is awesome!

Yep. The commievirus stole a gig from me, too. They were coming to my hometown and had to postpone/cancel. It was to be their first gig here (that I know of), I really hope they rebook. I saw them last year and they are the real thing. Can't wait to see them again.

I saw Rival Sons for the first time tonight in Detroit live. The show was amazing, played Pressure and Time album on its entirety from start to finish and then songs from rest of their catalog. The highlight of the show was Jordan and Do your worst. Jay is an unbelievable singer mix of Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriett, and Mike Mikey with thundering drums. The band is amazing live, I would highly recommend seeing them live if you haven’t, also new album 2022, almost done

Never had heard this band until today, thanks Pete. Just spent last two hours you-tubing their stuff. If this was the 1990s, the would be the Stone Temple Pilots. I'm glad I got exposed, but all their songs stated sounding the same within the first hour.

@@jp1194 no actually i'm all tuned in chief...They were okay for a few songs but then i started hearing the same song over and over...went through a lot of songs on like 6 records. They talked about STP with the same vigor back in the day that I have heard on the internet today about RS. I'm not saying they are bad, I'm just saying that they are spent.
