  • This is my latest build, from May 2011. To date, Jan 12 2013 I have 29,262 kms on it. It has a trailer hitch, but there's enough room inside for a weeks worth of groceries.
    I have been using this as my exclusive transportation.
    Although this vehicle is capable of higher speeds, It's kept at a legal speed and power output using a cycle analyst computer, tied into the controller.
    How fast, 60-65 kph
    How far, ~ 200 km @ 35-40 kph, with some pedaling
    How much, batteries, electronics, frame, canopy, shell ~ $3700
    Weight, ~ 160 lbs
    Batteries, 60v, 20AH LiFePO4, + Occasional 48v 20AH LiFePO4 reserve
    Motor Crystalyte 3548, installed june 2012
    40A infineon controller
    Cycle Analyst, V2
    100w DC-DC converter for lights, fan, heater and radio
    Front brakes Sturmey-Archer, laced to Sun CR-18 rims

    Thanks Harvey. I installed a small propane radiant heater to keep the canopy fog free. It also warms the interior. The side flaps open to keep CO levels low. Couple of weeks ago I took a 150km trip with temps at -15 to -20 and lots of wind. Since then I installed small electric blankets around the lithium batteries to stop cold temperature sagging. This has worked really well. Cold weather and salty shushy roads are good tests for any vehicle.

  • @kokopelli314
    @kokopelli314  10 лет назад +6

    Thank you. Okay, you might want to build or buy a trike the braze or weld on some attachment points. I did that plus used heavy duty HVAC hangers for the live loads. I used 18ga 6061 T6 bent into U channel and cut into 1" strips for the woven body shape. Check out the video description for photos. The body is 2part 2lb urethane foam on stretched 10 weight Lycra skinned by more 10/weight Lycra and polyester resin (west system) the body was built to match the trike frame to the 8' RV-8 aircraft canopy which I cut into three pieces. There are lots of small fabrications and a few additions since it was first built, like for example, a ducted cooling hose for the controller and a 12" pre stressed monoshock with variable tension. This vehicle has been a real learning experience and will help me in my next design which is heavier but more roadworthy at higher speeds.

      What I like about your velomobile... it even has air conditioning inside.
      It is very professionally made. I mean if we are going to built Mersedes it is here. Not in terms of high quality, but in terms of spacious cab, good view and features. It should not be light weight, but should have good powerful electric motor and batteries.

      Ken Bell zero emissions, 100% green, pure electric, I like it. if you ever build more of these you can make a serious business with that, and not only that but helping to put out the use for gasoline and oil, even making it an Eco-friendly Bicycle/Vehicle for environmental benefits it has.

I'm in the process of a couple really big builds. using Phasor frames, Cromotors hubs at least 100v 25amp batteries. With what you need a Schlumpf highspeed crankset 34T/ 84Tooth. I love to put my big setup in a clean Velmobile like yours. My systems got regen braking too. More video please.

      I started with the frame design. Needed suspension as my last vehicle was pretty rough. Videos of that are on my YT channel. Might end up using this shell design for a plug. Anyway, for basic building tips go to Atomic Zombie. For detailed suspension and design go to Recumbents.com . For all electrical including motors batteries etc go to Endlesssphere forums.

    The police here have been very good and seem genuinely concerned fir my safety. I've been asked about lighting by officers and asked how I feel other traffic responds to me, so I have to say my experience has been good. Although my velo can go quite fast, just as a car can, it's design optimized for 32-40kph so concerns of speeding haven't really come up. I've always been a cautious driver and those habits translate to this vehicle. Thats what keeps me alive.

    Cool vehicle. I enjoyed watching this. I was trying to figure out where you're from as your accent sounds like a southwestern Ontario accent, and then you mention Rondeau Park in the video - not terribly far away from me as I live in London, a few klicks up Highway 401, so to speak.
    You should try and commercialize your velomobile. As we move away from using fossil fuels to power our vehicles, people are going to be looking for solutions like yours. I believe that small, relatively low-speed and lightweight vehicles like this one are the future of transportation, at least in the urban environment.

    • @kokopelli314
      @kokopelli314  8 лет назад

      thank for that, Yup definitely SW Ontario and near Rondeau. I feel the same way. Greater efficiency is going to be a must for many kinds of transportation. If enough people are interested I will commercialize this project. I'm constantly tinkering with it and improving things . After many 10s of thousands of kms I've gained some respect for over-engineered suspension and wheel components. Many upgrades including Mag rims, larger bearings and a return to adjustable coil springs. Lots of winter road salt here too so corrosion protection is important .

    I believe the secret to popularizing a Velomobile is to legitimize them as road worthy transportation by enacting legislation that would require registration and license plates for all road bound velomobiles. This would make them viable alternatives to cars and mopeds and as such it would also lower their overall price, making them the affordable preferable choice between these three. Until this is done they’ll be viewed as curious oddities that are neither bike nor car nor moped.

    How do you think whether it is possible to make mass production of these vehicles?
    People know that velo-mobile cost a lot - starting from $4500 with average of 8000.
    But what if it was only $1400-1500? I predict boom. Instead of using bicycle, people can buy this device. As usual they can use legs, but additionally motor when tired. If only it can be made in conveyor produciton.

    Very nice build and an excellent design! Very spacious yet maintains a decent aerodynamic profile. Do you have a reverse feature? I ask this because you don't have the 'Fred Flinstone' access openings under the pedals for your feet.

    Where did you get the fairing from? Did you shape it yourself? Also, is the velo frame you made aluminum?
