I am 85 years old and only played cowboy chords ( not good ) have seen and tried uptrend diff lessons some good some on the edge. I lucked on to your lesson 5 easy lessons to Travis picking & man you got a way with that guitar. I'm starting to to try it tonight and hoping there is some more! I'm big good at formalized lessons but things like three at is a hew. THANKS WELL I TOLD MY GRANDSON I WAS GOING TO LEARN Travis pickin'. He laughed ! I Will talk later
WOW at 75 I thought Travis picking was impossible to learn( right hand technique ) ---NOW I see I CAN use a std PICK ---instead of complex thumb /1234 fingers !! ---Well you have opened my eyes to another possibility ! Amazing ! --thankyou for giving me this amazing idea ! --Appreciate more than you will ever know ---NOW I am not scared to go ahead and master this difficult picking style!
Nice! I’ve been waiting for a lesson like this one. I’m quite used to hybrid picking so it’s nice to look at these five steps and see what it is I was missing to make it sound more like what you’re playing here. The thumb positioning tips are quite helpful as I was trying to find a way to position my hand when doing straight fingerstyle stuff. Good lesson!
i learned travis style from my grandfather as my music teacher as well adapting his personal style an tone as well of versatility a hybrid picker myself
Thank you so much, I have a (rotten thumb from a car accident and can only hold a pic) before the car accident i was study piano so my other vingers of the right hand do not like todo nothing, so your travis picking is the way for me thank you so mucht for this
I have a question: Is there a reason you need to use your thumb to alternate the bass notes? I always find it flows better if you just use your index finger to hit the other bass note. Is there some reason this is wrong? I’m asking when just straight finger picking, not hybrid or using a thumb pick.
Man you really explained this... It wasn't hard for me to follow.. I'm a quick learner, but great delivery brother... appreciate it... I think I want to learn how to do it with thumb and pick.... I'll probably start with a pick first... much more comfortable for me also i think
"Travis picking is a finger picking guitar style" he says as he awkwardly plays the bass notes with a flat pick. I've been Travis picking for around 50 years, and trust me: don't waste your time trying to do it that way.

Blue Smoke. The original is great, but I really enjoy Doyle Dykes' take on it!
Does the Travis/Atkins style picking work with 3/4 waltz music? Such as "The Last Cheaters Waltz" or "Tennessee Waltz".
The easiest to start off with 😊

Finally…a great breakdown of the basics of Travis picking. Excellent!
REALLY well done and super informative. Breaking things down is such a challenge, but you’ve done it beautifully. Thank You!

This was my idea, too. Seems to be a workaround for flatpickers only. I can't get used to it.
There is no wrong. It’s your technique that is important. I’ve played 5 string banjo for years and banjo pickers always play as you have suggested.

Check out Chris Smither....Richard Thompson...Norman Blake...Billy Strings. DOC WATSON...TONY RICE. MONTE MONTGOMERY
You left out Tommy
Also, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham, The Beatles, Blind Blake, Mississippi John Hurt, Happy Traum and so on... 🙂
Too tough to learn now as used to a Pick for the last 30 years.....
OOPS --Step 4. caught me out ---need practise --still -its not to complex !
👏💯🇮🇪
Nope your hybrid picking Travis patterns with a pick.
He's great, however, having someone who actually plays in the traditional method may have been a better idea.

Well then if you know a better way,why don't you have your own channel.?
Nothing awkward about what he's learned to do, he's honest about rhe fact that most people don't do it that way. Options are good.
Who in the helll is Travis?
Yeah I think you meant 6 steps... step 1 is get a taylor guitar...lol
