      Hi Paul, we're having trouble getting hold of these garlic chive rhizomes here in kampheang pet. Everyone tries selling us spring onions or garlic lol!
      Any chance you'd be willing to sell us some?
      Cheers Leigh & Toon.

    Please let me share my garlic chives story with you and others. About 10 years ago, I had an old, dried little clump of garlic chives I thought to give a chance of growing so I planted them under a rose bush in my back yard (garden). They popped right out and within a couple of years took over the area under the rose bushes. This plant is incredibly prolific because of the huge number of seeds produced in the fall. I simply ignored the plants and let the seeds spred naturally. This became a problem because in late October, my area is subject to very strong winds for days and days. In my fenced back yard, the wind eddys and spreds the garlic chive seeds throughout my back yard.
    Within 5 years, about 1/4 of my back yard had garlic chives popping up, producing seeds and spreading. Now after about 10 years since I planted that first little dried clump, about 1/3 of my back yard is covered with garlic chives. What is remarkable is I live in an area of the U.S. that is arid and receives very little rain or snow. I don't water the garlic chives but they do just fine!
    Several years ago, I took the time when all the seeds were produced to cut and collect all the seeds produced in my yard before the winds came. I filled a pint jar to the top with nothing but individual seeds! I now mow them to try to top the plants before the seeds are produced, but there are too many, popping out of the ground where ever the seeds blew.
    So, the moral of my story is to manage the seeds that are produced by this plant or you too could be overrun by them.

    After seeing this video, I bought garlic chives in a 4" pot at the garden center. I harvested the top, then divided the ~16 roots into 5 new clumps which are doing well. I made garlic chive pesto with the tops I cut off before dividing -- great with fish or just spread on a piece of sourdough bread.

      This is the same plant as everyone else around here has, the only secret is good soil and time, most people don't let them grow long enough. Some very nutrient-rich fish water might help as well.

    So here I was thinking that 'garlic chives' was the green part of garlic, WRONG! They are a plant in its own self, such an INCREDIBLE Plant, your Missus and you got all that bed from just 6 root stocks! I wonder if this plant is available here in North America or is it an indigenous veggie, only to be found in southeast Asia? Ah,....anticipation, waitin' for your Missus and you to show us how you preserve the garlic chives! :)

    This was very fascinating !! I missed the video in which you planted these. Did you plant these from garlic cloves ? Or is this something local ? Do they produce garlic bulbs ? I have never been able to grow garlic here , after a while the whole stem rots. Would love your inputs .

    • @lifeinthailand
      @lifeinthailand  6 лет назад

      Garlic chives and garlic are not the same plant. I can't grow garlic either, they always rot at ground level. These are planted by separating the roots like I did in this video.
