At the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, former three-division champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KOS) knocked out former two-division champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (28-7-1, 22 KOS) in the twelfth and final-round with a dramatic combination of punches.
Mayorga started off with bang by coming out and throwing a right hand with knockout intentions. Mosley was quickly picking his spots, landing some good combinations. Mayorga would land a right hand that caught Mosley's attention, shaking him up a bit. Mayorga was the busier guy in the second, landing and throwing more. The pattern continued in the third.
Mosley found his groove in the fourth, landing some very hard right hands. He continued to outbox and outland Mayorga in the fifth. Mosley was pouring on the right hands in the sixth and landing flush lefts. Mayorga would take the punches and telling Mosley to keep them coming. Mayorga came back in the seventh, throwing a lot of punches and pressing. Mosley continued to slow down in the eight, Mayorga kept coming with hard, wild punches. The fight really slowed for the next few rounds, both fighters having their minor moments.
Mosley had a strong eleventh, landing two huge right hands to seal it. A right hand in the final minute of the twelfth had Mayorga hurt. Mosley jumped on him with several hard rights and lefts to send Mayorga to his knees. With a few seconds left in the fight, Mosley threw a picture perfect left hook to send Mayorga down and out as the bell rang. The referee waved it off while Mayorga was laying flat on the mat. The official time of the knockout was 2:59, one second left in the fight.

Good lord, how on earth did Mayorga ever win a title with that kind of technique? Wrestling, flailing away with one hand while he's got the other locked around Mosely's waist, throwing that goofy slapping overhand right... hell, the guy's entertaining and he's got a ton of heart, but someone on his team should've corrected that.
Apparently he was very difficult to train and lots of coaches quit on him, I could imagine 😂. I don’t know how true it is but he claims he was a gang leader, I imagine he’d been in so many street fights he thought he knew everything about fighting already. But hey it worked pretty well, other than a few of the greats of his era (alot of whom he gave tough fights too) he beat alot of guys.
That ending was exactly what would have happen to Taylor in the first Chavez fight had Steele let it go.
Would have been way worse. Taylor was on wobbly legs and needed the ropes to stand up, looks like Mayorga was at least able to stand up.
