    Nice video. I feel like street photography has become very performative and many people feel forced to do it in a certain way under the guise of documentation, so taking a step back to reflect on yourself and your relationship with photography is both healthy and essential for your journey. Keep it up and stay true to yourself.

    Thank you once again for this video. living in a rather crowded city, masses of people stress me anyways - even withough being a street photographer. Photography, esp. b&w film photography helps me to calm down, shifting my focus away from all the noises and distracting pictures. It does well to see, that I'm not the only found finding it helpful. I wish you enough recovery time - with or without camera. And thank you for being honest and not staging something, you don't feel you are.

    As someone who's driven by and seen these scenes a million times, your photos of this type of landscape really caught me off guard as to how much I personally liked them. They were incredibly mundane yet there's something that feels super special to me. Hard to articulate but I love this type of work from you! Hope to see more when you come back :)

    As someone with an introvert personality i have a love hate relationship with street photography, crowds and bustling cities can really be a challenge, getting in the right mind space. I was having serious doubts i was suited to it tbh. Then recently i was introduced to Liminal space photography on YT. I feel a natural affinity to the concept and finally feel i have found my genre. Best wishes Ivan

    Street photography has its place, although a lot of it, for me, is starting to feel derivative. Your video, however, is wonderful. Beautiful, really. And that jarring transition from the monochromatic serenity of your innermost explorations back to the frenetic color and noise of the street. And then back to the quiet peace of your black and white photography. Just brilliant. Also, you are blessed with a pleasing, calm, narrator’s voice. Please consider doing more of these films. No doubt they are time consuming, but they have a lyricism, poignancy, and soothing effect that I think a lot of us yearn to escape into.

    I started street photography myself a few months ago, convinced that this was the genre that will fit me the most. But I didn’t realize how being introvert would be a challenge for me. I looked for many advice to feel more confident and less afraid about what people might think or might say to me. But most of the time I just end up frustrated. Hearing you talking about love-hate relationship suddenly sounded like an evidence to me !
    Now, I’m exploring new ways to photograph to feel more comfortable even if I’m not ready to give up street photograohy. Looking at your video convinced me that enjoying photography is not about choosing a genre and stick to it even when it hurts. The most important thing is to explore new ways, and beyond the genre, manage to reflect a mood or infuse a personality in shots. And your amazing work perfectly shows that!

    Ivan,
    Your video just came up on my thread. Apparently, there is a greater being that has brought eloquent words and pictures of emotions along with passions that I too, have been struggling with. You have a special gift with emtions of a heart we can relate a language of pictures. I hope that makes sense.
    I am struggling with finding my passion. I have lost my soulmate, the rare love we all wish for, my protector, my heart ....to a rare aggressive cancer mucosal melanoma......
    My point is .... I want to get out there and be able to pour my heart, my memory, my emotions into photography depicting how I feel as I feel you just shared with us. Your video is I feel so deep and vulnerable... pouring your heart to us in this what I call a film not a video. I felt your words, bittersweet trepidations, your desire to find your passion again.
    I want more than anything to find my path too. I am 💯 introvert with ADD. Im widowed and a mother of 2 grown men. My father passed 6 mo after my husband. They were best friends as my father loved my husband deeply. The two protectors and the only men I have trusted are gone. My world has shaken.
    Thank you for showing me. Us all. Its ok and to take mental time to be in a space with ourselves and find therapy into this art. It should bring us all closer to where we need to be. Thank you as your voice is real here and I was incredibly moved.

    The video's title belies the the amazing content served up. Whether it is film making or photography the craftmanship is first rate. Thanks for every bit of effort that went into putting it together. I'm guessing some of the shots (like you walking parallel to the road with traffic in the foreground) were not "done in one" shots. 😅 Everything in the video seems well considered. My favorite clip was the bingo parlor parking lot. The slow walk gave my eyes time to linger over the horizontal lines of the building which made the car parked diagonally across several spots, pop.
    In street photography there has to be some level of dynamic tension that everyone will experience it in a different way, depending on who they are and what environment they are in. I'd take a tightly packed with people place like Hong Kong over streets of just about and metropolitan city in Canada. Outside of a few sketchy characters in HK, shooting was fun.

    I love the pictures. All about composition, no stress, more freedom. Less sophistication. I believe we lost a bit of ourselves with all the fantastic tools we have to process our pictures (Photoshop...).
    Enjoying the process is another part people tend to forget. It is crucial to me too! The tactile feeling, the shutter sound, the way the camera move with you. I't's like a jewel, like a necklace or a ring. If it's not adjusted to you, you won't be comfortable and won't wear it. 😉

    Interesting you find shooting in Black and White is easier than colour. I find it quite a bit more challenging than shooting in colour, as composition becomes king, whereas composition seems to matter much less with the colour photos that I make! Always enjoy your vids man. In your next video, I challenge you to use hard rock/metal music! I’d love to see your creativity in that challenge. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

    • @ivunchow
      @ivunchow  2 года назад

      Damn that’s a serious challenge 😂
      What I meant by easier is that the process is simpler. When I shoot in color, I’m also thinking about color combinations, which adds another layer of complexity.
      Making a good striking BW photo is hard, but the process is simpler, if that makes sense.

    A few weeks ago I also started with black and white and looking for silence and what also works for me at least is if you want to photograph a busy city in silence, then take the Sunday as soon as the sun has just risen this works well for my neighborhood personally.
    The city has yet to come to life.

    I’m very much the same. I’m passionate about it, but I also hate it. I don’t like cities or pages groups of people. In fact I refer to myself as “ The Reluctant Extrovert”. I’m not an extrovert but I feel pushed by what street photography is to make me step outside if my natural self to become more outgoing. I found this when I was a wedding photographer. In a room full of wedding photographers I was asked to stand up and say what was it about weddings I loved. I said, “Nothing. I am in it purely for the money”, to the sheer gasp around the room. Street photography to me is like photography being stripped back to its bare bones. Small and minimal kit, just how I like it with no preconceived plan of photography, just moments unfolding in front of me. I find cities stressful, alien and dirty, but I am drawn in by the challenge to create outside of my comfort zone. In 2022 I began shooting the streets and 3 years later I ditched being a pro photographer. My favourite place to be is photographing landscapes, but street photography is my mistress tucked away for those times when I need that rawness street photography brings. Street photography has made me a much better photographer. Above all I feel liberated while doing it, but I will forever always be the reluctant extrovert.

    • @simonbarnes7124
      @simonbarnes7124 2 года назад

      @@ivunchow I’m glad it resonates with you as what you said does with me. I coined this phrase years ago, the “reluctant extrovert” to describe how I felt as a pro photographer. You see in my early 20’s I could barely speak on the phone to people I didn’t know, but I became a social photographer regardless photographing weddings and portraits where I had to step outside of myself or put on a persona of confidence. I hated it but I also loved it if that makes sense. I was quick at making people feel at ease and I made them laugh while photographing them. I was way, way out of my comfort zone. I felt like a comedian behind the curtain waiting to put on his fun confident mask. I became very successful at my craft and I absorbed everything wedding related. Then one evening I watched a BBC documentary about Vivian Maier. It all changed from there. I was losing my wedding mojo , but persevered with it while absorbing everything street photography. My photography style changed radically as I saw everything differently through street photography eyes. I knew then that my wedding business was not for me and I shut it down overnight. I travel into 2 cities which I live between Bristol and Bath in southern England. 2 very different cities. They are great for street work. Street photography has made me a much better photographer. I’ve loved watching your videos and it struck me straight away I was like you in many ways and there are many of us like this. It’s funny because I have never used Instagram. I don’t worry about likes or if no one sees my work. It would be nice but it is not essential to me. For me it’s all about the light. Check out Markus Andersen a street photographer from Australia. His video “Rage Against The Light” is fantastic video you can see on RUclips or just Google it. Keep doing what you are doing. It is so refreshingly different and thanks for replying.

    You should look at "New topographic" style of photography. It takes some influence from street and landscape. Look at Frank Gohlke, Henry Wessel, Joe Deal, William Eggleston. Your shots in this video were many like that genre.... I say keep shooting outside the box and test yourself. You DO NOT have to pigeon hole yourself into one genre. Your video storytelling in these videos is AWESOME! seriously bro, your videos are freaking wonderful. Keep your chin up Ivan and and keep up the great work both photo and video.

    I never liked the idea of a 'cohesive catalogue' where all photos from a photographer or even a singular project need to be consistent. The content isn't, and when showing a nuanced experience of a place or life, I've never felt the need for my photos to be consistent. Contradictions are a part of life and my photos aren't all the same. Black and white, and colour can sit next to each other and communicate different sides to an experience. They compliment in the variety.

      Love your videos as always bro. Despite being an introvert, I still find your videos and stills a joy to watch. I also dream to narrate, video and shoot stills just like you. Someone told me I have a nice speaking voice and I should do a podcast or something where my voice might shine. Sadly, I procrastinate a lot and nothing is done at the end of the day. Glad you are back home bro. Nice to see the crowded streets once again. I do miss HK . Take care and God bless!
