Planting Tomatoes In The Polytunnel In April On Our UK Allotment

- Its still very early to be growing outdoor tomatoes. But we have taken down and planted some of our tomato plants for the polytunnel. Its still cold with risk of frosts. But when you run out of space, sometimes you just have to run with it. Fleece at the ready for when the temps reach a risk of frost.
I over fed my tomatoes one season early on and they refused to flower so I had to fush the nutrients out and then stop watering and try to convince them they were dying and they then started fruiting. My Sliced Tomatoes are potted up, but my new seed will be sown today with the cucumbers and courgettes.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
We should be ok. They won't get any feed for a while yet. We did it a few years ago and had no problem. But ill keep what you said in mind just incase 👍.
I'll be doing my courgettes and melons next week, when I get 5 mins 😂
@@oddsocksgrowing didn't get time to sow anything today.....🤣.
😮 it’s still sadly way too cold 🥶 here but soon hopefully as the living room is full of seedlings 😂. Hope they all do really well Helen. Have a simply amazing weekend and happy gardening 👩🌾, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦
Thanks Ali. You too 🥰🥰
Greetings from northwestern Oregon in the USA! Our weather here is very similar to yours and I have been raising tomatoes and cucumbers in poly tunnels for over thirty years (unheated). I used to raise them for farmers markets but now only for family. You seem to be doing great and on pretty much the same schedule as I am. I also am not that hesitant to get my cucumbers in the tunnel mid to late April depending on weather forecast. We can get some frost up to mid May but I have never lost any planting them around mid April in tunnels 😊
Same here on the cucumbers. I'll be growing gherkins in the new polytunnel and outdoor cucumbers, the outdoor cucumbers will be started next week. But fingers crossed I'll get the gherkins done this week.
It's good to see someone else who grows early in the polytunnel. And looks like you have had years of success 🙌
Very interesting and very thorough. Great advice and information.
Super. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
My tomatoes are doing well in my tunnel. Sweet Millions, Yellow Pear, Tumbling Tom gold, Black Opal and Ukrainian Purple 😊
Sounds like you are going to have some great tomatoes this year 👌
I've sown mine mid March as I have done for the past few years but I got an allotment last year so this year I am growing more than double what I usually sow. This was a bit of a mistake I think because I now have a ton of foot tall plants on windowsills fighting for light. I should have staggered the sowings. A few mid March and the rest early to mid April. I'm growing a couple of blight resistant varieties on the plot - Rose Crush and Cocktail Crush. Most of the rest I will do at home in a sheltered back garden but any spare non-blight resistant ones I'll find a space for them on the plot. My outside tomatoes did pretty well last year. Was really happy with the Cherokee Purple which was my first time growing. I unfortunately don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel so have to plant my allotment ones outside too. I fully anticipate the plants on the allotment to struggle much more than my sheltered garden especially with wind. The non blight resistant plants on the plot will likely get blight too but going to give them a go there anyway just in case.
Our outdoor toms last year were really bad. Hardly any growth. The first time ever we had such a large fail. We had tomatoes off of them, but a lot hardly grew two foot. We always grow excess as we process alot of the toms.
Maybe you could create a sheltered ares with some old fencing or using a tall growing beans nearby to create a bit of a barrier from the stronger winds?
I'm sure you'll have a bumper crop this year. Its great to experiment on an allotment.
Is having tomato envy a thing, or is it just me? I've got it, soooo jealous about how many tomatoes you've got, and I look forward to seeing which ones you rate the best for cooking with.
I love growing alot. I can and make alot of sauces to last the year. From pasata to cooking sauces or bottled toms. Its alot of processing but really is worth it. But I'll do a taste test vid at the end. 👍
Here in Suffolk I was wondering if the weather will ever improve to get my tomatoes out! I went to weed a patch only to see last year's seed from fallen tomatoes germinating happily in the open!!
Fingers crossed it will carry on being happy and give you a good crop 😊
Often grow tom from seedling in the compost heap, all grow well if a bit behind the others. Nearly all tend to be 'Gardeners delight' which I used to grow a lot of but decided were too susceptible to blight.
Alas no new super strain has yet emerged but I live in hope.
Havnt grown gardeners delight for a long time. Used to love the taste. Yes the compost heap is great for growing toms 😂 I normally get rogue ones each year.

It’s looking fab 🤩👌What’s the difference in temp between the greenhouse and poly tunnel? Is there much difference?
I find there's little difference. Not sure if a greenhouse holds onto the heat for longer through the night though. Both the poly and the greenhouse was around 35° when the sun's out.
I’ve got loads of tomatoes to still sow!! Just need some more compost…
Compost... always need more 😂
There tougher than people think mine have been in there 3 inch pots in the greenhouse for abouta month now i only carry them in if a frost is coming
I think the natural light benefits far outweighs the odd cold day
My toms are outside behind a low wall and in flower, no more frost now..
Love your orange tomato so many. What`s the name ❤
It was supposed to be black prince. But it turned out not to be that. Looks like it was the wrong seeds in the packet. So who knows. But they were very late in the season to ripen.
