@@thesmallpockets3182 Nice name. Didn't mean it that way. I don't watch MTV, and also wouldn't call anyone a troll after the time it takes to create a baby!
This was a movie I expected to like a lot based on the reviews and via VHS and airings on A&E network, I watched this movie five and a half times and can't believe the praise it received. A good friend of mine and her family also love this movie and I'm sitting in front of the television screen wondering what it is that everyone is finding so great about it. Even more confusing, I can't figure out what everyone finds so funny about it. That TV dinner scene had pedestrian writing, non-existent acting and absolutely no humor. What I watched was a feature-length student film and not a good one. I was convinced at first that this had to be a case of the Emperor's New Clothes with people afraid to admit there's nothing to this movie. Now that I'm more mature I realize this is a perfect case to illustrate how all art is subjective. Seeing these two critics raving about this boring, poorly written, acted and shot student film doppelganger taints both their judgement on anything they ever reviewed (or at least their sense of comedy (seriously, that TV dinner exchange was good?!!!)). Both these critics have railed against movies without fleshed out characters and yet they both loved this movie with no fleshed out characters.
I love this movie, but it's hard to say why. It's just so charming. It's something about the atmosphere or something. I've yet to crack the code on why I like it so much, but I think a lot of it has to do with the way it's shot and edited. A lot of the comedy comes from silences, timing and the way the lines are delivered. It's not laugh out loud comedy, it just puts a big smile on my face.
@@hashdealer8822 There's not a lot of movies like it. It's charming, basically. I like Eva's deadpan personality a lot. Plus, the ending sticks in my head. There's an old adage in screenwriting how everything can suck, but if the ending is great than people will forgive you. It's the same thing with the Godfather: When I first saw it, I didn't get it, but the ending made me keep thinking about it until I saw it again.
It's a very polarizing movie. I saw it in a theater in Seattle 3 times during the first week it was released. Crowd reactions were the same each time. About half the people walked out laughing and talking about how much they enjoyed it and the other half were not at all entertained and seemed irritated at those who were laughing. On one occasion I guy actually turned around and stopped a group of people who were happy with the film and started asking them what was so funny about the movie. The guy was very mad about it. I haven't seen a film since that had such a response.
i just saw it last night for the first time and it was also my first Jarmusch movie. My reaction is exactly the same as yours. This has all the tropes of a shitty student film: black and white, cigarettes being smoked in every scene, characters walking/driving all the time but never really going anywhere, awful acting from people who look like theyd rather be doing anything else, and more ... honestly i thought it was utterly painful to watch although im not so cynical as to suggest that people dont really enjoy it and are just following the herd. Im sure theres some of that, but im also sure some people get something out of this movie which i simply wasnt able to get
Movie was kind of average ...it has some smiling points ...but it doesn't deserve the praise it has got ...i can say its not a gem that people claimed it to be ..it's okay ..but actors are really great especially two male actors ...
The score was composed by John Lurie, who played Willie, and Eva, played by Eszter Lintz (sp?) played the violin in the string quartet. And the music is perfect for the film.
Thank you very much.

A great film
Jim Jarmusch!
Screaming Jay Hawkins !
This is fantastic.
An opening doesn't get any cheesier than what we just saw!

This movie is boring, nothing really happens, the dialogue is dry and futile. I'm about to watch it for the 7th time this weekend.
😂. You got me there. I was about to lose my 💩! A great film. It is beautiful in its simplicity. I love it!
I thought the movie was a lot of fun. The movie may have inspired the TV series Perfect Strangers with Bronson Pinchot.
These two really missed the nuances of the film. WTF. So much for critics.
King hipster! Here he is folks! He knows all!!
Geez, you guys really don't like this movie. I thought it was great.

This is exactly how I felt about Tampopo. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!

what ?

This movie is freaking terrible! The only good part is, “I am the vinner”.
Your idea of a good movie is Marvel Comics.
