    Pointer... You should have a dB meter by your head so we know how loud you have to get to get the tone we're hearing, in case anybody is chasing cranked tone at bedroom volumes. Love your work. You're the Demo Jesus.

    • @justingarcia7722
      @justingarcia7722 4 года назад +5

      From personally experience a 5 watt amp cranked will still hit 100db or so, you really can't get a tube amp to be quiet AND cranked, even if it's 1 watt. They won't have the body or headroom as a bigger amp but it'll still hit high db

    • @jwmcmillenii
      @jwmcmillenii 4 года назад

      @@justingarcia7722 What about, say, the Vox AC4TV which attenuates to 1/4w, or the Marshall DSL1CR that goes to 1/10w? Will those get to "bedroom" levels?

    • @justingarcia7722
      @justingarcia7722 4 года назад +1

      @@jwmcmillenii I have no experience with those amps so I don't know, but I'd imagine a 1/4 watt would be relatively quiet, I don't know how good itll sound though. Depends on your "bedroom" too. Most people feel 70-80 db is reasonable for in doors but at those levels I usually just opt for a DI option or a yamaha amp. If you live in a house or play well enough that it won't disturb your neighbors you can get away with more

    • @jwmcmillenii
      @jwmcmillenii 4 года назад

      @@justingarcia7722 Well, for myself, I'm good where I am to get a little loud from time to time, but I am keeping an eye out for a buddy who's on a quest to get a more inspiring tone at lower volumes. Something back and forth between don't irritate the neighbors and don't irritate the wife watching TV in the next room. I've suggested some good amp-in-a-box style drives in combination with a compressor to simulate cranked tubes. Hasn't gotten around to trying that yet, but it might work. He's amenable to using headphones, so maybe the Strymon Iridium as a headphone amp? Or an amp with a decent cab response through headphones? He is 100% against bothering with a computer/audio interface/plugins all that. Any suggestions?

      use a step down voltage plug..or if you what something cheap you could get two resistors of equal value and and a large filter cap to make a voltage divider...you'll need to make sure your tolerances will take 240v with the caps and resistors..that will shunt the voltage down from 240 to 120v..just Google " fixed resistance voltage divider circuit".. its method that's used to bias and step down volages all the time within pedal and amp circuits!..I wouldn't recommend using the trimmer method though

    • @Danielallanz
      @Danielallanz 4 года назад

      Ivan Montalvez well if you have a lot of US vintage amps that don't have a dual voltage power transformer i might think about investing in a medical grade voltage regulator..you just set the volts you need the amp to draw and because its to the highest EU specification (as its to be used in hospitals)..you'll just be able to run any vintage amp you like without a transformer change etc..also you can go even further in depth with how you bias your amps..you could run it a bit cold or a bit hot at the supply voltage too if what your getting out of the wall or a generator isn't to quite spec..obviously you'll still have to bias your tubes now and then but it would solve your problem dealing with vintage amp draw and give you some choices when it comes to gigs too!.. I guess it depends what your doing as a player but if your gigging its maybe a worth while solution for a few problems you might face if you come into contact with different vintage gear a lot

      Ivan Montalvez I know I went into it a bit but its kind of my fucking thing lol..you know finding solutions for guitar rigs or circuits in general..
      I build pedals (I don't do the kit thing,i design my own circuits and modify pedals I like,just recently I designed a lot of cool mods for the catlinbread sabbra cadabbra and RAH pedals!) and fix amps...I also realize that what I suggested sounds like a lot of money and effort,but I really think a voltage regulator of the quality I mentioned would give any player a nice edge because supply voltage can held you with things like headroom and the choice you know. with my pedal builds I notice huge differences when I run a 9v pedal in 15v.. you know. anyway its cool to chat and I am sending my best from here in england.

    I might have been interested in it if it had a 12 inch speaker instead of the 6 inch one.
    My Laney Lionheart L5 Studio head sounds great through the matching 1x12 but when I tried it through an 8 inch speaker it sounded like a tin of wasps. 😆
    No matter what the size of the amp, they all need 12 inch speakers in my opinion, be it a 1x12 for 5-10 watts, 2x12 for 15-40 watts, and a 4x12 for 50 watts and above.....that's valve amp watts, because for some reason solid state amp watts don't seem as powerful, which is odd and I don't know why. I must research that, thinking about it. 👍

    • @Madeguydo
      @Madeguydo 4 года назад

      A great alternative to the 1x12 is a 2x10, try that with your Laney, you usually get much more definition and less mids compression.

Output stage of a solid state amp is probably the most likely to have the issue you described. Some amps because of the components today you just unplug and replace a board. My original post just addressed the use of the term "handwired" as if some amps are built by hand and others aren't. All amps have to be assembled by hand and some wiring done by hand. The difference is in the method of construction, circuit board or point to point hand soldered. The term handwired is used incorrectly as if it's a superior way of building. A Soldano uses a circuit board and is handwired. Each method has it's pluses and minus's. I just see the term mis-used a lot and feel it's mis-leading to a lot of people, like the term "handbuilt" guitar. All guitars are assembled by hand. The term is incorrectly used to describe how some wood parts are shaped.
