  • In this Chemistry video in Hindi for class 11 we explained the plum pudding atomic model proposed by Joseph John Thomson in 1904. At that time it was known that electrons are negatively-charged particles and atoms have no net electric charge.
    J. J. Thomson considered three plausible models that would be consistent with the properties of atoms then known:
    1) Each negatively-charged electron was paired with a positively-charged particle.
    2) Negatively-charged electrons orbited a central region of positive charge.
    3) The negative electrons occupied a region of space that was uniformly positively charged.
Thomson chose the third possibility as the most likely structure of atoms. He proposed, "the atoms of the elements consist of a number of negatively electrified corpuscles enclosed in a sphere of uniform positive electrification"
His second model was taken in consideration by one of his famous students, Ernest Rutherford. He devised a model known as Rutherford atomic model.
