It's about a radio station in Mexico 🤘
@BROU-bb2uc I think it was either XELO or XERF, but not sure. Those are the only Mexican stations I remember hearing about way back.
Man, I've been rooting for this for a long time. And yeah, this is fairly autobiographical, and it also references that amazing phenomenon of pirate radio, and in that case broadcasting from Mexico with tons and tons of wattage, lol. There were also some iconic ones that would broadcast from a ship just offshore, for example, laugh.
This thing kicks hard and is just so damn tight all the way around, and once I learned how to play it on the guitar, I was in heaven. ❤ I also really like that they're treating lead vocals back and forth in this one. It's so fun.
Eddie Van Halen, being a big fan of Billy Gibbons & ZZ Top, later created "Hot For Teacher", with "I Heard It On The X" as his inspiration.
Love this tune!!
OK Biz, Got Me Under Pressure next
Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings !! Do it now, Biz !!
Agree. Do it Now!
The rhythm section on this totally kills me every single time, and I've been loving this since I was in junior high decades ago, lol. ❤
The X was a crazy high watt output radio station in Mexico...the US limited the wattage output of AM stations...still do...but the X if I'm not mistaken could be picked up across a lot of the US...
@jeffjones6221 I think the limit was/is 50,000 watts on AM. I think the average is 5,000 with the lowest would be little 250 watt stations, then 500, 1000 and so on.
The Mexican radio station XERF was 250,000 watts in the 1960s and 1970s. XERF was a "border blaster" station that broadcast from Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, across from Del Rio, Texas.
Explanation
The power output of a radio station is measured in watts.
The stronger the signal strength, the more it can withstand weakening when it passes through obstacles.
Commercial radio stations typically broadcast at 50,000 or 100,000 watts.
Bob Smith, the creator of the Wolfman Jack character, broadcast the Wolfman Jack Show on XERF in 1963.
@ I think I forgot to mention I was referring to US radio wattage. And at night, the signals went farther because of the different layers in the ionosphere etc. pulled back from the earth. And better in the winter, I believe.
That is some genuine Texas boogie....it has that real outlaw Blues Rock vibe that could have only originated in Texas.
I am here for classic 70's ZZ Top.
Excellent song from an excellent album. I saw them live once opening fro Deep Purple - first time hearing them and they absolutely blew Purple off the stage. Memorable. LaGrange has always been my favorite tune...
Old ZZ is the best...
Pantera covers this song under the name Tres Diablos - Heard it on the X. The lead singer Phil Anselmo was injured and had to undergo surgery and the remaining 3 members continued as Tres Diablos, Rex Brown the bassist is on vocals
I cut my teeth on this album crusing main street with my friends about '77. This and Grand Funk were big for us that summer.
One of the best things to ever come out of Tejas besides "Black Gold."
Hell Ya
ZZ Top !! Great group, thanks Biz
XERB was. Station broadcasting from Mexico and the main DJ was Wolfman Jack.
I've been waiting a long time for you to react to this tune.👍
There were unregulated, high power X stations in Mexico along the border. I was raised on XROK Juarez. Cut through the night time air 350 miles south of the border.
Heard it on the Biz!
My first ZZ Top concert was the Fandango tour!
Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings has got to be next!!!
Good Ole zeezee before they went MTV
Nice! The call letters of Mexican radio stations begin with the letter X. So nothing to do with Xitter. The call letters of American radio stations, in contrast, start with either W or K depending on which side of the Mississippi. In Canada they use C. I bought a copy of Fandango! on cassette when I was in high school. Side one is live, side two is studio. "Heard It on the X" leads into "Tush". "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings" also smokes. Also check out "Francine", "Tube Snake Boogie", "Pearl Necklace", and their most excellent cover of the Sam & Dave classic "I Thank You". Sam Moore recently passed so that would be timely in a way. When I lived in San Diego the call letters for the golden oldies station on the AM dial was XTRA. It's sister station on the FM dial was the alternative rock station 91-X. Looking them up just now, 91X is still laying down tunes, but the AM station went sportstalk for a decade or so before switching to Spanish language formats.
Keep on rock and rolling Bizmatik. Always loved the reactions you did for AC/DC. Have you listened to Goddo feeling strange today. You will love that one🎸
Its about a pirate radio station from Mexico that would crank up their power to be heard over much of America! Something they couldn't do in the States!
I saw them the tour that is on that album cover. Way back in 74 or 75
☮️❤️🙏🌎🌍🌏🇺🇸❤️☮️
Fandango is their best album by miles.
Waiting for the chance to get my LP setup up and running again.
I highly recommend “ Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings” from the same album. 👊👏👏👏
Old ZZ Top is where it’s at. May I suggest “Mexican Blackbird”
@hollywoodpotato5289 Hopefully the original without the changed lyrics. When I first heard it, I didn't believe it was ZZ Top.
@ right!? Same here.
Please try Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers from _Tres Hombres._
Try "Montose. Space station #5."
Way too short, WAY too short 😕
