As a comparison on a United flight from CHC to SFO they started with a snack & drink, then the main meal service, then mid-flight a small filled roll, and finally a breakfast service not long before landing. On the other hand I don't think there was self service snack/drinks bar but I could be wrong.

How can qantas be operating direct flights between Auckland and New York ?
Qantas also used to operate direct flights from Auckland to Los Angeles
They have the right - it's called a fifth freedom flight.
QF3 originates in Sydney and stops in Auckland to refuel, I guess Qantas has fifth-freedom rights.
Why is an Australian carrier flying that route instead of Air New Zealand ?
