      +shiranui This makes a'lot of sense. Many natives in Mexico that are no longer affiliated with a tribe have no knowledge, or access to information. It's sad to me that my own parents don't know their history and only know the European/Spanish history they were taught. They only speak a foreign language and practice a religion that was forced on their people. Some places are starting to change though. I hope for a future where Native people from all of the Americas, can connect and learn about each other and our history. Come together and stand along side one another for common struggles. Despite everything done to our ancestors, we're still here throughout all of the Americas (more divided than ever), but still standing. I can only imagine the great things are people can accomplish in unity.

      Colonialism does not have to come from europe. Natives did not even have flags to begin with. So you are getting your ideas from colonialism anyhow. I know that some whites say go back home when you are home (some chicanos been here for centuries) but dont tell all whites to go away, that makes you no different than your enemies by bringing up azlan as proof of land ownership, some white people are awesome and I consider them my people. I've always wondered that. How is Aztlan "ours" if they are still Natives on that land and have been for millennium?
    After some digging, I've come to the realization that Aztlan wasn't the entire US Southwest. There are still debates on where Aztlan existed. Anyways, it makes sense that Aztlan was somewhere in the southwest, if not Northern Mexico, because the Uto-Aztecan language family branches from the Shoshone in Southern Idaho, thru the Southwest and Mexico and finally ends with the Pipil in El Salvador. The Nahuatl/Mexica People where most likely semi-nomadic peoples and their home Aztlan was probably somewhere in the SouthWest or Northern Mexico. But to claim the entire Southwest as "ours" is just arrogant and it even does have a "colonial" feel to it as mentioned in the video. Chicanos need to stop claiming the entire Southwest as their own. Why not get to know the people of the Southwest and have cultural exchanges instead? Who knows, your ancestors might have been cousins.

      The reason behind Mexicans claiming Aztlan isn't for a power play. Its to show we belong here. We're just as Native as the Natives in the US and do not get treated that way. If a Mohawk native came from New York to California they'd still considered native but a Mexican comes from Chihuahua to New Mexico and all the sudden they are foreign or illegal.

The important thing is to realize that our bloodlines are intertwine with each other, we are all related-- We Are All One People. And if we fail to realize this we will never unite as one and the white men will always stare at us with indifference, and say to each other, "Why should we worry, they are the same Savages. Walls and fences were first put in by Europeans in our continent, about year 1600. Many Native Americans like me, thought, that was crazy idea, to put a fences on our vast land. We did not know that walls and fences meaning was "Property Ownership". Native Americans never sold an inch of this vast land and in our mind, this our land and cannot be divided. Now, America is completely fenced as our land has been stolen or improperly taken. It is crazy. Native Americans always welcomed everyone to share our bounty but now is ridiculous as it was back on the 1600. Fences and walls are not a good idea for us.

The reason why 80% of the American continent (Yes, all the countries in America) speak spanish, and have spanish names, is because, they, (Spaniards) came 1st to America and were ahead of England and the rest of Europe for almost 100 years. • @melahuak

      Native Americans from both Mexico and the USA live amongst both sides of the border, look up the Yaqui and Apache nations that reside on both sides. Aztlan (or more correctly Aztatlan in Nahuatl) is a reference point of the Uto-Aztecan language branch (look up Uto-Aztecan language group, which includes many California, Arizona etc, & many Mexican languages as well like Nahuatl and Yaqui) point of origin. It's fact the Aztec (Nahuatl) language originates in this region, the United States Southwest. Ppl can say it's a myth and lie all day, forever, but fact is the language originates from this region, pointing to northern origins of the Aztecs/Mexica. This cannot be disputed, the Uto-Aztecan language family is in this noted region and is something that cannot be disproven. Just as Spanish, Italian peoples descend from Romans, and those languages are centered in Southern Europe, Nahuatl and other Uto-Azt. languages come this area. Religion, cuisine, and cultural traditions (I have friends who are California Indians, Cahuilla, and the food they eat e.g. Chia seed in lemonade etc is same things my parents and their parents do, and my folks are from central America, southernmost reaches of Nahuatl).

Anyone who actually lives in the southwestern states knows this is Aztlan because Chicanos are the majority population and we have also shed blood for these lands. Native tribes did not magically spawn on the American continent. Much evidence reveals that they crossed the Alaskan bridge during the ice age from Asia.

    In part you are correct but mostly unaware. Look up Mexcaltitan de Uribe Nayarit and you will find the birth place of the Mejicas and tribute to why Mexico has it's name. The Mejicas were nomadic people whom traveled through many parts of the northern states in America and back down to present day Mexico city. They traveled in search for the eagle eating a serpent Just look at the state seal of Nayarit Mexico and again tributes recognition of the Mejicas origin. The Mejicas lived nomadic for well over 200 years, don't you think that in that amount of time one can cover vast amount of land and learn languages including evolving ones dilect. These modern day Indians and scholars have minimal clue of Mexican history where they having these useless debates. The Mejicas influenced the Americas by simply dominating the Toltecs and the Olmecas. The Aztec name was an adopted name because other tribes that united with the Mejicas would not permit it. The Aztec name was used as a common description of the unification of all the tribes of that region. The Spanish burned all most of Indians records but the Indians left bread crumbs that still can be traced. In fact to further prove that the panel of debtors in this video know little including the Indian man speaking to the panel. Corn was genetically made over 7,000 years ago by the southern Mexican Indians from a little grass called Teosinte. This was process was introduced to the Northern Native American tribes. So it baffles me to hear all the ignorance being spread and taught to people especially my people. I am Chiricahua and Tauhumara on my father's side whom had grandparents whom adopted a Spaniard last name Gomez for record purposes. I don't belong to any registered reservations because I don't feel I need anyone's validation including governments. I am Mejica and Cora Indian origin of Nayarit not to mention Spanish on my mother's side. That is all I willing to reveal. Thank you and get educated people.

    So I want to ask this question. If my grandpa was born in Texas but has the last name Contreras and we were raised our whole lives thinking we were Mexican but one day he says "Oh we aren't Mexican we're Comanche" how does that make sense? We have a Spanish name and he speaks English and Spanish but swears we aren't Mexican and we're Comanche. Is he just confused?

    • @josejlongoria4813
      @josejlongoria4813 6 лет назад +3

      Nothing to be confused about. If your Comanche ancestors lived in what is now California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado or South Texas, they lived in Mexico and were therefore Mexican. That would make you "Mexican" and Comanche.
      Incidentally, the word Mexica (Meh-shee-kah) is the root for both Mexicano and Chicano. Chicano is a shortened version the word Mexica with the Spanish ending "no". It should really be pronounced "Shee - Kah - no".

    • @josejlongoria4813
      @josejlongoria4813 6 лет назад +2

      That is correct, Mexican is a nationality. And, that was the point I was trying to make.
      A Comanche living in what was then Mexico would have been a Mexican national, while at the same time being a member of a Native American tribe, the Comanche.
      As an example, my ancestors were granted land (by the Spanish Crown) on both sides of the Rio Grande river in Texas before the US existed (1776). And, although they looked white, they were also of the Tlaxcalteca tribe (the tribe that conquered the Aztecs/Mexicas for the Spaniards).
      So my ancestors that ended up on the Mexican side of the river were first Spanish/Tlaxcalteca and eventually Mexican/Tlaxcalteca.
      The ones that ended up on the US side of the river, were first Spanish/Tlaxcalteca then Mexican/Tlaxcalteca then Texan/Tlaxcalteca and eventually US/Tlaxcalteca.
      The Navajo (Dine) went through a similar process, eventually ending up as US citizens, while also being members of a Native American nation.
      So Kristof Kristoff's ancestors were at one time both Mexican (a nationality) and Comanche (a tribal afiliation).

    • @josejlongoria4813
      @josejlongoria4813 6 лет назад +5

      That is correct, a Chicano, as I am, is a US born "American" of "Mexican Ancestry".
      The word "Chicano" is self explanatory. That is, it is a shortened form of the word "Mexicano" but it does not just refer to a nationality.
      It has a tribal and racial connection to the "Mexica" Indios who inhabited what is now Mexico City. In fact, a number of words once used by Chicanos and/or pachucos, have their origins in the language of the Mexicas, that is, Nahuatl.
      Here are some examples:
      Tacuche = Soot suit
      Calcos = Shoes
      Cholo (one who jumps or runs) = A young pachuco
      Jocoque (sour) = Soured milk or the original yogurt
      Zoquete = Mud
      Zacate = Lawn grass
      Pipote (popote) = Drinking Straw
      Chante = Home
      Esquite = Pop corn
      Tocayos = Two persons with same name
      Chicanismo was not created out of thin air. It is a US sub-culture with racial, language and tribal ties to the Indios of all of Mexico. On the other hand, pachuquismo, is a defensive reaction to government sanctioned attacks on Chicanos by the US military in California (see suit soot riots).

    The Chicano Movement is resistance to U.S. neo settler colonialism. The reference to Aztlan, the so called mythical homeland of the Aztecs, was given to the geographic region that the neo colonial government of Mexico occupied for only 27 years. Irregardless of what its called, it is the sphere of influence of the Chicano Movement. Most scholars are only professionally knowledgeable of the Chicano Movement. Very few of them and many of their informants, have been inactive for several decades and disconnected from the continued evolution of Chicano Liberation Ideology, this accounts for the confusing rhetoric they spout in academia and unfortunately is regurgitated by their naive students. The result is the confusion and movement to change the Chicano student organization, MEChA, Movimiento Estuduantil Chicano de Aztlan. No where was their ever proposed an imposition of another neo settler colonial government, the Chicano Nation. Chicanos are descendants of the Original Peoples of this hemisphere, Abya Yala. It has always been understood that their are preexisting Peoples long before the Spaniards, Russians(California), Mexicans and the Americans(US). Chicanos claim their descendancy from the Original Peoples long before 1492. Yes there exists "Occupied Mexico" mentality and ideology, that is neo settler colonialism. Chicano is not an ethnicity, it is a political ideology, resistance to US neo settler colonialism. It is inclusive not exclusive. Anyone spouting the contrary, has been operating outdated 1960/70's cultural nationalism and has not been invilved in the struggles of Chicano ideological development. Chicanos are not assimilationists.

      Pellegrino Aqua Its False. Out of all the Indian tribes who went in front of a Federal judge to be recognized as being born here as a tribe, they gave them the Indian Reservation, not once do you hear of this Mexican Aztec fake Indian race, so they could gain Citizenship.

    I think his fear of imperialism from AZTLAN is legit. But it’s just history where we came from, we were told by OMETEOTL to leave and migrate in search of the promise land. It’s just to say we are connected. It was part of AZTLAN, but we left it and now it’s your land to keep. The poor communication here is from the current matrix consciousness

    What everyone does not understand is that “Aztlan” aka Chicomoztoc or 7 Caves refers to the human skull and not a literal place.
    The Vatican via Spain devised this story. It is not found anywhere prior to their invasion and illegal occupation of Anahuac, Tahuantinsuyu and Turtle Island.
    If you do not know this, especially my brothers and sisters, learn your sources and look to see if they’re myth peddlers already, in other words, religious nuts. You can’t use religious nuts as primary sources. You can’t use known liars, or the Spaniards of that time as primary sources. These both are known liars. If you accept them as a Native, that’s your issue. And not a healthy one.
    Chicomoztoc aka 7 Caves, where one becomes a centered and balanced person, is your skull. 2eyes, 2ears, 2nostriles, and 1 mouth. 7 Caves.
    You’re the blind being lead by the blind if you’re unaware of this.

    I find it interesting that foreigners to the USA always claim this land, but tribes in the US never claim lands in other countries. Asians claim native Americans, Chicanos claim this as theirs, the Moors claim this land as theirs, yes the boarders are made up but my wife and I have different cultures than Aztecs, she is Taos Pueblo and im Modoc Arikara.

    Aztlan is the land were the aztec came from. Is not a mith. Because historically every one migrate so mayans olmeca Aztec and many yaquis apachis migrated from north. To the south. To disagree is a discussion for all of all of us to talk about. Chicanos say it to tell the white people we know our history. And to say it is mexico it can be worse to some. But what is worse is to call our salves indian. And we are not from india. We are all indigenous people lets have a collective discution. We are not colonizers we are family and we should work like one.

      As far as the term Indian.
      The thing is many Native Americans use the word Indian and seem ok with it.
      I remember seeing an interview with an actress from the Dances With Wolves movie. She noticed how on the set it was mainly non Natives who used the term Native American. Most of the actual Natives often used the word Indian to refer to themselves. I think they know to make the distinction between themselves as "American Indians" vs people from India.
