    Hey man great vid. I've got a question about installing. My fireplace already has stone how would I got about installing the beam? Would i have to use a grinder and cut the stone out making a recess ? Or can I put lag bolts through the stone and onto the studs ? Any tips would be great. I'm in London ON. Would you guys come out for just an installation or is that to far out? Thanks a lot

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  3 года назад

      Thanks brother for the comment. So in your case, I would use lag bolts and PL Premium into the beam. You won’t have a clean line since the stone will prevent that. One way is using motar (cement) to fill those voids at the back of beam where it meets the stone. So at this time we are extremely busy and won’t be able to do a install until February London is 1 1/2 hour drive from us. So not crazy far but a travel fee would have to be added. If you have further questions, call me at (416) 936-3662

    Thanks for the great video. I don't want to change the color of my reclaimed barn beam mantel. What kind of polish/varnish you recommend for the protection without changing the color?

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  2 года назад

      Hi there. Thank you so much. I recommend if you have a cut off of the beam to do your testing there before applying to beam. It’s hard to say since no matter what you put on the mantel, since the wood is very old, it will change the Colour. It will suck up anything you put on it. I use a dead flat varnish from Saman Which works out best. Slight difference but the closest to natural I’ve used. Hope this works for you.

    So you didn't hollow out the beam. How do you mount it then with the weight of the beam?

  • @redpix3264
    @redpix3264 3 года назад +1

    Do you seal the back side when installing to wall with anything? I'm installing a red oak mantle I made, (thanks to your vid), and I want to make sure the heat from the fire place does not seep through the cracks on the back side. (TV above mantle). Your video was great btw. Thanks.

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  3 года назад +1

      Thank you my friend for the kind words. I wouldn’t worry about the heat effecting your tv as long as you installed the mantel and tv to code distance from fireplace. But we don’t add a sealant on the back.

    Just pickup 40 barnwood beams dif thickness and length. Any advise as to pricing and marketing mantels up here near. Chicago? Are you hollowing out wall side for a wall cleat to fit inside mantel? Lighter mantel? Bad idea? Thx

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  4 года назад

      Hey brad! Nice to meet you. So pricing here in Canada varies but I charge $125 per foot finished to clients need. Unfinished they sell around $50 a foot in Canada. We don’t hollow it. We use straight 8” metal brackets with PL Preimum construction glue smeared on the back side. The brackets get screwed into the wood studs in the wall. To cover it up we usually are doing stone or shiplap on the fireplace. Many different methods on installing actually. Many RUclips videos on how to. Hope that helped you a bit. Thank you for your comment.

    do you have your beams kiln dried ?

    How would I gut a 9 inch deep beam to make it lighter and become a floating mantle? Any help would really be appreciated. My mantle is 116 inches long so it’s super heavy. I need to lighten it up. Thanks for any suggestions. God bless

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  4 года назад +2

      moottzzy so what I would do is mark a chainsaw blade with a marker to the depth you want removed on the back of the beam. Do as many passes with the chainsaw until a hammer and chisel could take over. It will take some time and patience but it’s the way I would do it. Hope that works for you.

    Do you fumigate your beams yourself or pay someone to do it? I received a reclaimed wood beam knowing it had not been treated, got a deal or did I!?? haha I'm assuming that I treat it first before staining and using varnish. What are ways that you treat your wood before starting?

    How do you recommend drying out a beam thats been sitting outside in the rain for a while?

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  4 года назад

      Arkadia Holdings Ltd hi there. So 2 ways. You could bring to a wood supplier and see if they could put in a kiln or leave outside standing up in direct sun for a couple of days. Maybe longer. Keep in mind that old beams are like a sponge so absorb moisture quicker than new wood. So depending how long it’s been outside, it might not be usable.

    What grit sandpaper did you use with belt sander?

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  3 года назад +1

      Hi there. So I generally use 60 grit first. Depends how the shape the beam is in. Some cleaner beams I won’t even use the belt sander

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  5 лет назад

      Rapp 1128 hi there. We use 8” flat brackets and screw them into the wall studs before finish the wall with stone. Generally that’s how we do it but many ways of doing it depending on your application.

    What is the brand of varnish you used?

    • @STEVESAMPAIO
      @STEVESAMPAIO  2 года назад

      Today I use a better brand then back then. Made by Saman. We tend to now use Dead Flat varnish for our mantels since they give it a more warn out look.

      Lori Evans hi Lori. So many avenues to get but if you check locally to you, google search barn beams and see which store is selling them around you. I get mine directly from farmers in the spring when they’re cleaning up.
