My days of being interested in flash cars are sadly over now since I hit 50 but having seen a couple of these in the flesh now I just had to check out some reviews. This car would have been my dream machine back in my 20's It reminds me of the Marcos Mantula. The RF is the first car to turn my head for donkeys years.
i am sold on this car! :D this will be the first car i buy for myself! :) Mazda MX5 RF.. i think i'll have it in grey or white, fully specced out. good review.
Reminds me of an early model RX7 without the rubbish low end torque, poor reliability or high fuel consumption. Very good review mate. Keep them coming!
With the inevitable rush towards electrification, or mild hybrid power, maybe the ND2 generation Mazda MX5, will be the last true sports car. Any vehicle that requires batteries, however small, will incur unnecessary weight, and no amount of shaving off grammes, ounces or pounds, will take away the fact, that the NF MX5 will be too heavy.
Eamonn McDermott i think its about marketing etc. For example in my country i can test drive almost any car before buyin then i checked mazda they have only mazda 3 and cx 3 avaliable for td. What a shame how could i buy without tryin 2.0 engine or 1.5 and im tall and i have to be sure that i can fit in the car.
Too expensive, too slow, and too impractical. The 2.0L RF which, according to the Mazda website, doesn't even come in red, with the majority of the extras which are pretty necessary, comes in at nearly £35K as of 2020.
@@azteka6103 I once briefly toyed with the idea of buying a second hand 350Z, but it was a little pricey, and I don't think the MPG was particularly healthy.
@@jivebunny3765 you said too slow too impractical and too expensive, now(i mean in Uk) you can pick a 370z nismo for almost the same price, yes its 3.7NA engine, but you have power and space, and when you floor it, somethin' happens, unlike mx5.
krisnadi imam No matter how good an automatic gearbox is, it's still an auto. A car made to be driven like the Miata, 86/BRZ, and most hot hatches shouldn't have fast on the top of their priority list. I'm sure modern automatics are faster than manual ( especially for rookie drivers ), but these cars are made for the sake of driving, to be enjoyed, and shifting gears is a part of that joy. I don't care if people put DCTs in supercars and GT cars, because they have other stuff on the top of their priority list, like speed and refinement. But for back-to-basic sports cars, a good chassis and a manual tranny is a must. I don't hate autos but it's just not the right gearbox for a miata. Mazda autos aren't even bad. I drive an auto Mazda 2, it shifts quick and quite smoothly. But even with the manual mode ( which I use like 99% of the time ), I still wish my mazda has a third pedal, also because it has a chassis to die for. Different story to the Cx-5 tho, even though the feel of the manual shifter is the same, I won't bother to use it. It doesn't engage me to use it.
It doesn't even matter if he IS gay. Why are car guys usually so insecure around gay guys, but they all love the Jaguar E-Type, which looks like a giant member (and a handsome one at that, let's admit it guys) :D
Thanks for this. Well delivered and informative. The only negative being the shutting of the boot, especially as the commentator ear marked how the suitcase could be negotiated into a tiny space. But thats me being pedantic.
Use soft luggage. You will get more into the boot/trunk. I don't drive an MX5, but I learned this on another video I watched on You Tube. Intend to buy one!
If like us you are used to a Lotus Elise - this is like the Star Trek Enterprise by comparison - yes we are considering - thanks for the informative review
Not sure about the suspension specs though. Everyone else says they have stiffen the suspension slightly to compensate for the extra weight. I believe you've got that wrong
I don't disagree that it's a good manual gearbox but, have you driven a Honda Civic Type R? Or, most manual Honda cars. I like the RF, I hate those pathetic cloth roofs. They look so wrong in my opinion. This is what I'd buy, if I bought a Mazda MX5.
Does make me laugh with people saying they "accidentally" clicked on this thinking it was car wow, it's literally the biggest, boldest and so very obvious it's not car wow. You might be saying it's not good watching but you still gave them a view count 👍
I've been looking at a bunch of cars, all for less than 25k, but I haven't found one that excites me like even the cheapest bike, anyone have any suggestions?
One thng I don't get. If there is no glove box then where do you store copies of your insurance, registration and pollution certificates to show to cops in case you get pulled over? I'm not from the UK so really don't know....
lol because the suitcase wasn't put in properly and/or the trunk was just too small. Oh well, like he said if you don't like it buy a hatchback and Im inclined to agree.
I feel like this car would sell more if there was a v6 option that brought the car to around 300 hp. The styling and retractable roof are awesome. But if this thing had a good v6 with a performance suspension and brakes, it could get REALLY fun.
Incredibly beautiful and such an amazing convertible only problem is it is low down that you feel like a midget next to cars in the city It's more country lanes car and less city slicker
"The RF is powered by just two petrol engines". Interestingly when you open the bonnet you'll be disappointed to find there is, in fact, only one engine in there. Clumsy sentencing, Carbuyer. "The RF is available with two choices of engine" would have been clearer.
I do love this car, and I do like Mazdas, but I wish they'd remove the stick from their collective backsides an inch or two and inject some fun into the 3 or the 6. Boring cars can kill manufacturers
Visors = do not swivel to the side to block out the sun Foot well bulge = Designed to favour the left hand market the bulge is larger on Right hand drives. It is also larger than the previous model making foot position other than on the foot rest impossible. Very uncomfortable on long distances. "A" pillar blind spot = Triangular windows are too small and does not achieve visibility. Only aesthetic to hark back to the old NA design. Glove box = deleted. Centre console = Cover twice as large as actual storage space which is only small enough for keys. Rear view mirror visibility = impeded by the plastic air break which also distorts the vision and gets dirty really fast.

This guy is a great presenter, I also missed Mat when he left but James made it its own. And hey, we now got 2 guys to look forward too!!!
He reminds me of Quentin Willson in his delivery to camera
Shit, accidentally clicked on this thinking it was carwow
wakiwest same hahaahahahaha
wakiwest hahaha same here, until I saw the lispy queen that is.
David Thompson lispy queen lmao 😂
wakiwest na man dont dis they good
wakiwest did exactly that myself
This RF is brilliant, for sure. It blew everyone away when it was unveiled
You can't really say the suitcase fits if you can't properly close the boot.
Eduardo de Montenegro that's what I thought #fail ...
Eduardo de Montenegro well he did close the boot properly- the lid had a cave to allow it
You have to keep watching, where he does close it properly 5 seconds later.
Marius, did you fall asleep and dream him closing the boot? It does not happen.
David Clark I think I saw him do it

Jesus your life's not over at 50 lol
Great review and really well filmed. You guys have definitely picked up your game in the last couple of months. Thoroughly enjoyable watch!
Nailed it Mazda, quite simply drop dead gorgeous. For looks like that, the price is a steal.
That rear view shot. Looks perfect.
I just love the design. It looks so beautiful
i am sold on this car! :D
this will be the first car i buy for myself! :)
Mazda MX5 RF.. i think i'll have it in grey or white, fully specced out.
good review.
Id go with white...😉

Mazda just can't seem to put a foot wrong nowadays! Can't figure out why they are not more popular.

James was waxing poetically about this one....and he should! Poorman's F-type IMO, even looks "kinda" like one in the 3/4 rear view.
GREAT job James!
I've got an automatic RF and don't miss having to change gear one bit.I much prefer an automatic to a manual.
Someone needs to send this video to Mazda Indonesia. Miatas will only come in automatic in Indonesia.
Hahahahaha wow
Steve Edward I agree...
Steve Edward the automatic brz is not bad tho...
Owen Nathanael So you watch carbuyer huh... cool

good review, dont get why people hate you so much =(
People hate change. Even if its better than before.
ShoryukenDatAzz Yeah that be it 🙊 better then before 😂.
I think this guy is excellent at these reviews, but it's simply the way he speaks at times (to me at least) seems a bit uppity.

i love this guys and rebecca and matts reviews :)
Mazda should make a real coupe on basis of this one. Would look so good.
2:08 RS Roof? Isn't it RF
i think they made him review this car cause his last name and the car suit each other perfectly
Great review, I am sold to RF 2 litre manual
awesome review; just bought the rf 2.0
a fine car. Mazda is definitely my pick of the japanese manufacturers atm.
is the cabin really this small, or do you just choose to drive so close to the steering wheel?
Still no electric folding mirrors? With all the amenities but mirrors are manual, weight saving?
No wind noise issue at motorway speeds like another review pointed out?

This car is my latest obsession
can you drive this manual if you're only 5 foot tall?
Great presentation 👏👏👏👏👏👏
James, you should also upload a compilation of bloopers.
just 157 bhp out of 2.0 petrol? lack or turbo? is it worth it?
comedyman112 the old version had 160/167hp from 2.0 lol
James .... I think this may be your best review, yet! Love your style ... keep it up!
2:39 Yea... That boot did not close! :)

between the carseats theres a glovebox
RLX that's a mighty SMALL glove box!
“Shut up and drive” :P
RLX LOL 🤣
when it launch in India...
in my opinion the softop is better
2L creates 150hp with all that light weight?
Good review!
For anyone who thinks this car doesn't work for tall people - I'm 6'3 and I fit perfectly fine.
budget 911 targa
Thanks for reminding me that I have a haircut tomorrow.
Is this car as good as a Peugeot 206?
It takes just 13 seconds to do it's business? i thought i was watching dog 🐕 review not car review for a moment lol.

see a 13b jumbo port going in that

Are we going to ignore the fact that the boot didn't close properly
0:54 oo err
Am I the only one who wants a hardtop coupe mx5, I don’t want a convertible I’d prefer the hatchback boot and use it as a mini f type.
the most reliable sport car
The boot didn't shut 😂
Most important phrase: buy a hot hatch
So did I =)
I doubt this manual transmission is better than porsche´s
that boot was not closed mate. And OMG who takes a massive bottle of water anywhere, unless you are driving across a desert go to coop.

He must be somewhat tall as he doesnt seem comfortable w/the top up.
rather have a cizeta v16t
I want one so bad. In white.

Why do you keep calling it metal hardtop? It's not metal, it's plastic composite!
Anders Gammelsrød It's metal. The buttresses are composite, but the roof is aluminium.
