Hi Florian. Imho, it looks like to me that it is an advantage for Richomme to have a comfortable boat with this particular chair, the great visibility from inside and all the computers quite well set closed to the chair. Richomme looks like great while Dalin looks like very exhausted. I think the more the sailor can rest and be in a comfortable environment, the more he or she will be able to stay in a good mental and body conditions. What you think about it?
@Marco-q6d yes! Very much so. I talk about the chairs in the first show of this season a lot. Because of this reason exactly. I had an I review with Heerma 4 years ago and we both had the same idea that a comfortable good sitting and sleeping place was not a luxury, but an advantage. And I think that is what is being proven this time around
Hey Florian watching your channel daily from the North Island of NZ! I love the personal touches including the cup of treasure. This is such a mega race, it takes a huge amount of knowledge, experience, strength of characters and stature, and runs rings around the day sailors of us. Merry Christmas Florian
First of all your Show is By far the best! Three questions: 1. which of the boats is the best vessel from your perspective? Which skipper has the best material to work with? 2. what is the most critical passage for the skippers coming up until the end of the race? 3. what about the ketchup bottle behind you?
I completly agree to your "theorie" of the impact of "the feeling" !! So many things that people can create in "hardware" and skills, but the assembly of all these tools (Hardware, skills, experience) creates a "thing" that could make the difference, and as you said, some have it, some not. Thank you very much for your great job !! Seems YOU have it :)))))))
It's boring to say, but I can't believe how fast these boats are. as beautiful as I find the old J-class yachts, foiling has really made this and the america's cup exciting to watch.
Hi, also a question, maybe for next Q&A based on the following content: I recently watched a documentary about „Illbruck“, which won the Volvo Ocean race in 2002. Here the crew had to do the race with as less as possible weight. E.g. the handles of all toothbrushes were cut half or they only were allowed 2 underwear shorts. Everything was limited to the maximum. In the Vender on contrary we see some stuff that could be seen as unnecessary weight. Like all the camera equipment, drones, some have decoration in their boat. Now my questions: 1. Do you think the sailors would perform better if they would each get rid of let’s say 10kg of equipment? And if so: how much is the impact on such a long journey? 2. Do you have any idea how much is the weight of all the tools and repair materials the average vendee sailor is using? Cheers and keep on the nice work!👍
Love your show and watching it everyday Florian, best on VDG. Question, you often talk of « old and new foilers » can you elaborate a bit on that ? All the best et merci beaucoup 😊
Jean said he believed that the foils are to likely to break. His new boat has many other modern features like a rotating mast with deck spreaders and a scow bow.
Loving the daily updates, Florian! Could you please put english subtitles for the trench speaking skippers? Between the boat and weather noise and the jargon I can't figure out what they are saying. Actually, sometimes I'd like subtitles under the english speakers, too! I really appreciate your explanations!
As far as I understand Imocas are being steered just by autopilot (no hand rudder), so the question I have is if the latest generation of autopilots have the ability to see the waves ahead (with the many cameras that are now on deck) and steer the boat in order to surf those waves (just as the older boats were sailed during the Volvo Ocean Race, where they were steered down the waves), instead of plowing blindly into the next wave ahead at 30 kt of speed.
What you have just described today about all the leading sailors is I believe “seamanship”. Like a good airplane pilot has “airmanship”. Which is something that cannot be taught.
Moin Florian, QUESTION Here is one that has not been a topic so far, but is probably of interest to many. The Man over Board Situation. You are of course attached/hooked on to your life line and get somehow thrown over board. How do you get back on board ? Easy to ask but probably not easy to answer. Greetings, Frank P.S. Still watching your Show daily Still enjoying your Show Daily. 🤙🏽
Hi Florian. Thanks for the report. Brilliant as usual. Q&A: how far can the boom swing from the centreline? How does the head of the sail not foul the backstay and if the boat accidentally gybes how is the mast supported given that they only tension the windward backstay. Thanks.
How do the skippers single handedly climb the mast with a harness line in tension for protection? Do they use climbing gear, like jumars up a static halyard? I would be interested to know how they self belay.
Wondering what camera the sailors are using…generally….? Great imagery! Nice heater for Sam….even I could have one on my cat! Cheers, thanks, Andrew (florida)
Hallo Folrian we watch your channel eveeyday. Does they have a watermaker on board? Does you would like to sail the Vendée Globe One day? All the best Michael & Doris
Question on the Spoiler designs, it seems that the slender shape as it comes to interface the hull, looks like weak stress area. Could the design have more of wider section then taper out to tip. I believe the slender shape helps with hull drag reduction when in the water when tacking. Thanks, Dave
QUESTION: what do you think are the main motivations the skippers have that sustain them through the many extreme challenges (physically but also mentally) of the VG? Also, you continue to amaze with your ability to explain the challenges the skippers face, some unique to offshore racing but some in common with all human endeavors. “How the human reacts to the unexpected.” So well said.
The routing prediction is based on the weather prediction. When these huge low pressure systems roll through the wind direction changes a lot. The other factor is the ice exclusion zone. Remember these predictions could be very different in 24 hours.
Hi Flo, my question is about the speed, wich is shown on the tracker. Sometimes the boats go from over 30knots down to 15 knots in a second, when they dump in a big wave. Does the tracker show the speed in that second, or is it taken for a longer period of time? Thanks Tom

Hi Florian, I'm just wondering...where are the Dutch in these sailing events? while the Netherlands is a small country, it's a big sailing nation. But the Dutch aren't really there anymore in major sailing events .however there is quite a big boating industry in the NL, is it a sponsor issue? Most of the french sponsors are completely unknown outside France..but still able to invest a fortune in such adventurers.
I'm currently helping some of our young talents cross over (hopefully) from the V60 to the Imoca class in the next Ocean race :). It's hard but we are working on it :)
This is a good question because the Dutch have a strong history in the ocean race. French media report that 80% of the population follows the race which means it is offering good exposure to French sponsors.
Question: Note that these comments are a bit long and aren’t meant to be rude to the skippers in any way. I saw the recent updates of Seb Simon and Charlie Dalin. Both seem to attribute Yoan Richomme’s success in closing the gap to luck/favorable conditions/situation. In Seb’s case, he blames it on his broken foil, but Seb isn’t gaining on Charlie (actually, he’s falling behind), so while it definitely weakens his options, I wouldn’t say that it is not fair. Contrast this with the unfortunate falling back of Thomas Ruyant from this leading three-pack - there it was totally weather-related due to his lagging position. In Charlie’s case, he blames the closing gap on Yoann having better wind than him, but they are both in the same wind field with the same amount of wind and waves. So, my question is can you assess analytically via the performance metrics whether Yoann and/or his boat are indeed just sailing better than the other two? I am obviously biased toward Yoann, but it seems that the other two are trying to throw shade on his advance now that the lead is slipping. In actuality, I think Yoann should be commended for his long-game strategy after taking the northern route in the Southern Ocean to avoid risking damage to his boat, he pushed his performance to the max by consistently averaging over 500 nm per day for a week or more! I also think that he is better rested and taking less of a beating (e.g., skippers sleeping through planned maneuvers and bumps and cuts due to being abruptly tossed around) due to his multi-windowed cockpit and shock-absorbing chair configuration. That seems to be a strategic advantage that I think other boats will adopt in the next VG.
Am thinking of some music to accompany these videos of IMOCAs in the southern ocean. What about some Borodin ruclips.net/video/kqKclPhsK0o/видео.htmlsi=8sM4zJ89yeKWD_kd

Hey Florian can you explain the rigging design on IMOCA. There doesn’t look like there are spreaders on the mast, just the pole at base?
Would be fun to have some pros possible answering questions as they truly know it from a professional point of view

I just saw the news that Medallia dismasted! So sad.... Pip is okay, thank goodness!
So dissapointing, for her and for us. So much work..😥
HI Florian, again very thorough report for the day. Thanks all lot from that.

Asq far as “feeling” the weather, Jean Le Cam’s experience is unmatched. Ask Alan and Isabelle!
Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind routing decisions

1/4 of the boats actually have a heater, e.g. Pip and Sam.
Pretty sure Boris has a heated blanket
In the beginning, you see Seb Simon enyoing his port foil ;)
indeed, that one still works fine :)

Frage für die nächste Ausgabe: Warum sichert sich kaum ein Skipper, wenn er auf dem Boot zu tun hat.
When building a new boat for the Vendee, why did Jean build a non foiler?
Jean said he believed that the foils are to likely to break. His new boat has many other modern features like a rotating mast with deck spreaders and a scow bow.
Money. It's very expensive.
great insights!

How many hours of daylight do the sailors get in the Southern Ocean? Are they seeing the "midnight sun" in the southern hemisphere?

why do you think the routing prediction for Boris is so weird on the initiatives coeur website?
The routing prediction is based on the weather prediction. When these huge low pressure systems roll through the wind direction changes a lot. The other factor is the ice exclusion zone. Remember these predictions could be very different in 24 hours.
I think the model prediction for Boris is wrong. i think he has a good chance for the 7th place
I was thinking the same thing😊
Boris showed in a recent video how he is planning to skirt around near the corner of the ice exclusion zone
I thin there are heaters on the imocas

Malizia has got a heater.
Do sailors ever catch a cold or the flu on these long solo races?
sure they do
Unlikely because the benefit of being isolated is that you won’t be exposed to any new viruses because they can’t be transmitted to you.
Where shall the virus come from? Out of thin air?
No closed captioning for this video? So sad can’t understand a lick of French 😁
