After dogs, cats and fish, birds are one of the most popular housepets in the world -- and for good reason. With their astonishing colors and feathers, these flying beauties give contrast to our plain blue skies -- teaching us to appreciate freedom and nature.
But as with anything rare and exotic, some of these colorful flyers come at a sky-high price. So if you’re thinking of buying, -- or wondering just how high we’re talking -- you’ll want to stick around, because today we’re counting down the 10 most expensive birds in the world.
If you didn’t expect a chicken to outrank an Exotic Parrot or a multi-colored Toucan, then stay tuned or #1, because the price tag on these seemingly ordinary birds will boggle your mind for the rest of today.

My Dad paid over £5000 for a racing pigeon from Louella lofts in Belgium when we were kids, over 4 decades ago, he paid for the pigeons genetics and it won so many races, Louella tried to buy it back! He had photo's of his favourite birds all over the house. He'd come home from work and go straight out and let them have a fly while he cleaned the sheds out and fed them. Us 4 kids had to be in bed before he finished with the pigeons. He's in his 80's now and still racing them...No wonder all 4 of his kids didn't get interested in his hobby, we were brought up in hand me down clothes until we were old enough to buy our own. ALL his spare money went on his pigeons, we lived such a deprived life because of this hobby he had, we were so under nourished, i didn't reach puberty until i was 18. Even the Jack Russel dogs he kept weren't pets, they were there to keep the cats away from his sheds and fed the cheapest, nastiest food. We grew up with buckets of water full of dead young birds he didn't want. He'd just drown them and leave them in the bucket all day, if a bird lost it's way twice during races, it would be drowned. Some people today even give their pigeons steroids, there's a dark side to Pigeon racing!

I recently moved to North Carolina and saw mountain blue birds for the first time this summer! They are so pretty!!! 🐦
My dad passed away in 1993. 2 days before my mom died in 2013, a Male cardinal came and sat out back just staring at the house. It sat a couple feet off the ground, but I noticed how even when my dogs ran barking towards it, it never moved. It just sat there. After my mom died, I saw that a female had suddenly joined him. They sat there together a day or so, them both left. This was special to me because before my mom got sick, I asked her if she died and could come back as anything, what would it be? Her answer was “a Bird.” 😇😇😍😍

Not only that, but he was also critically ill... he had nerve connection problems and a brain dysfunction. We were just moving him around 300-400 miles... He ended up dying not even a month after delivery because of his illness. His illness was caused by something he ate, and the owners didn't know what to do.. Don't get big, expensive exotic birds. Putting a price tag on them makes them more vulnerable. As innocent as they can be, the birds dont themselves know how unique they are.
I hate it when people act like there isn't a reason behind their expenses, or the laws that protect them, and just see it as an inconvenience. People will see that they can't have a macaw in their state or something and won't even consider WHY people might not want them to own it.
A lot of birds are so expensive to buy because, behind each one that makes it into someone's home, thousands have died at the hands of smugglers trying to "domesticate" them.
In my country, cockatoo are not as expensive as in America, so people with enough money can buy it just for a toy, especially during lockdown

I can find those peacocks for around 600$ ( the green tailed ones) and around 800$ ( the white one) where I live. The Ayam Cemani Chicken is sold for around 300$, with the chicks going for about 80$.
The Hyacinth Macaw go for around 10,000$ with rare colors, but healthy young ones can sometimes be found for as low as 4000$. (And the ones with disseases, feather problems or very old can go for as low as 800$). I have seen some breeders sell it for as high as 30,000$...pretty much stealing the money from their clients.
Just because someone got their wallets raped doesn't mean that's the actual price of the birds. Most of the prices on your list simply don't make sense.

Cardinals, Oriols, Bluebirds are common in my area and in my opinion they are more beautiful in the wild than in captivity. The pied peacock as well as the white peacock my friend's family breeds them as well as that black chicken, but none of them are as expensive as this video states. The peacocks you can buy for around $800 and the chicken less than that. They also used to have black swans which for a pair you are looking between $1000-$2000.
As beautiful as cockatoos are I wouldn't want one unless it is over 10 yrs old, because these birds go through a violent rebellious stage. I do agree with you if you’re talking about wild birds but I totally disagree if you’re talking about captive bred birds, captive bred birds consider their cage as their safe place, forcefully taking them out of there and “releasing” them is a death sentence.
Don’t act as if you understand what birds want, it’s not logical for a bird who was never free in the first place to be unhappy because of something they never experienced.
And if birds should be free, why can’t dogs, cats, reptiles, fish and other pets be free?!

They have no purpose. They simply exist. That's like asking what's the purpose of a rock. But anyways, let's assume that so have one and it's "to teach us to appreciate beauty and freedom". That wouldn't be mutually exclusive to them being smuggled and sold, because not everyone is going to learn the intended lesson. Why is that? Because not everyone is equally moral to begin with. The most expensive one is the one you can get for basically free if you're not gambling on a bird race. As a kid I saw cardinals about every day in Missour and never thought of them being worth any money, but they're cool like the bluejay. In Utah, I only see the drab, but adorable pidgeon being a homeless urban dweller. My favorite is not the bald eagle, but the peacock instead. If I had land, I'd ask around for some incubating eggas on birds from chickens to guinnees to peacocks. In a midwestern state, you can get things cheap to nothing like that be it a pet or a egg layer. My mom had a cockatiel that was free since there is an abundance. I wrecking I could get parrots and peackock for free or next to nothing in a place like Missouri. One thing I noticed everywhere I've been is not a single bird wants to be my friend.
There is always 2 northern Cardinals during spring time on my backyard, and they're always flying around here and there, this spring I've only seen one they were always together.

@@yaqubssuperworld9376 For the most part that is true, however if trained and mostly kept outside i'm sure they could survive.
"shouldn't be sold for profit by criminals"
You telling me *professional* breeders and pet shops are run by criminals? Dude, a bird kept in captivity won't survive in the wild if you release it. Also, if you give it enough love, attention and take care of it it will be perfectly happy
that thumbnail is the most real looking thing ever. a human holding a 500-1,500 pound animal with one hand.
2 Pounds to be exact. Black palm cockatoo is in the thumbnail.
All I want is a Philippine eagle 🦅, they are like just the most majestic bird I've seen. But owning it is illegal 😅
Depends on where you live if it's illegal.
So STOP wanting to own one!
All of them is beautiful and they need to produce in the wild
Soudais Hara
It's true😋
Some of them wouldn’t exist anymore if we didn’t capture and breed them.
Yes.. you are right 💖
I never think money when I see our mountain bluebirds, or our Orioles or any of the other birds we have where I live. That's insane
The first 3 species on the list are protected by US State and Federal law and are illegal to possess unless you have the right permits. I don't know why they are on the list.
Birds are meant to fly free.. Let them fly in high sky...
Except chicken's
Except peacock. They dont fly high and long.
Ostriches and Penguins don't fly to:)
Except emu’s
Keeping a bird and caring for it well according to you is bad? If the bird has a strong bond with you, considers you as a memeber of it's flock and if you take care of it and give it enough attention, it will be perfectly happy
Idk in which area you live, I live in Europe, and peacocks really aren't that expensive as you mentioned! Even in the 80s-90s (before internet), they would cost maybe 500... Today you can find them as low as 50-60 dollars. Only green one costs more cuz its rare + their rare variations (such as peach, black, violet etc)
#2 Should have been the Spix macaw. You need a special certain license to even own one that costs money + the bird itself costs around $100.000
So it’s the northern cardinal waking me up every morning lol

No one would never have a pet peacock at home
I do! And I know someone else who does as well!
Toucan’s seem really sweet, they don’t seem as big as I thought they would. I’d love to have one if I had a bird, the only thing is we don’t have them in my country and certain exotic animals are illegal.. including Toucans, I painted two of them on a branch together. I find them beautiful.
I would have figured the Goliath was top spot. Imagine my surprise when PIGEON took first! My black dove pigeon is cooing at me now Haaa Haaa! He's not a racing pigeon, I rescued him after a storm. He's a wonderful birb! I love them all. When I moved down South for a bit I was delighted to see CARDINALS! I could not believe how cute they are. We had a whole bunch of them at the feeder.
Then I moved to Florida for a bit, I just adore a flamboyance of flamingos! At the moment, we seem to have an abundance of these black chickens, although I haven't been close enough to see whether they are all black. I don't know who they belong to but they kind of hang out on the corner... of a CITY! They're something else!
Nice list, I love the whole list, OH the Hyacynth Macaws! Well, God blessed me with a pigeon and I love him like crazy. Take care of your #Birbs everybody, they're such cool characters.
Why are you only naming wild birds. I can name a list of birds that are much more expensive than some of the birds on this list.
- Pionus
- African Grey
- (some) Conures
and some more that I cant think of at the top of my head.
Galah cockatoos are also very expensive, than go from £800-1200
Well he didn't JUST name wild birds, he named a hyacinth macaw.
Cuban Amazons, Red Fronted Macaws, Major Mitchell Cockatoos and Yellow Naped Amazons are all expensive.
Beautiful full ❤❤I love the animals
eclectus parrot, went from 800 to 3000 dollars in 10 years, the female color mutations however sell for 60k with the males going for 20k
should also mention that most of your first birds in the list aren't generally kept as pets nor normally bought or sold and flamingos generally will starve outside of their krill pools and aren't seen as pets
I can tell you know your birds
@@heart4serving have spent pretty much every day of my life around them and used to be a breeder, by now i better know my birds, lol
Huh interesting. My friend jas a hyacinth he got for free and takes good care of. He went to a zoo some yrs ago and the zoo closed down and remembered him and tracked him down sense the bird really liked him in a animal encounter and they asked him if they'd take the bird. Thid was in 2005 and the rest is history. He's been happily living with my friend sense.
ngl thats a really nice story tnh
I have two Ayam Cemani chickens, they are quite beautiful, and lucky we got a deal on them and got them for cheaper then that price. We named them Midnight, and Statue. Both female.
Why put a price on these birds? Just leave them be, and enjoy them in their natural habitat...
True

i actually have a bird that i rescued 2 years ago but it’s still a wild bird so ofc i’m not gonna keep it in my house he lives outside but he always comes back when he’s hungry, dirty, hurt,or tired... but overall he stays outside 😌
I have a blue parakeet named blueberry and a green parakeet named pickle and they saw these birds and started moaning 🤣😂
Ayam Cemani chickens are definitely not that expensive, usually around $100 for a live chick. And their eggs do not look like normal chicken eggs. They can be many colors, from black, to green, to cream colored. My husband's aunt raises lots of these along with her silkie chickens and frizzle chickens!
I'm 100% sure I saw a Goliath cockatoo in the wild when I was working on a farm in Stanthope, QLD before. Never knew they were worth that much!
I always see pigeons on maldives I also caught one
there was a baby white peacock in my neighborhood that i always gave food to and one day it stopped coming to my house and then my neighbor told me he saw a someone steal it
WooW!! I am sorry 2 hear about that.
That’s illegal...
꧁•Pixel Dinosaur •꧂ yea sadly we didn’t find out who stole because they drove away if we did know who it was we would report them
