For everyone who randomly clicks on this video 12 years later, this is not footage of the actual EF-2 tornado that hit downtown Atlanta in March 2008. That storm hit at night. This was from a series of rotating storms across Georgia the next day, and Glenn Burns mistakenly thought a whole wall cloud and tornado was on the ground again somewhere in Atlanta. Nothing was ever confirmed for the next day.

The storm shown here did not produce a confirmed tornado (though there were warnings issued at the time). There was a confirmed tornado in downtown Atlanta on the previous evening (Friday March 14) which is most famous for having struck the Georgia Dome while an SEC basketball tournament game between Alabama and Mississippi State was in progress. The video here shows a wall cloud or similar feature moving through Atlanta during the afternoon of Saturday March 15.

Wow-amazing footage! I was watching the weather Channel (they were kinda nervous up there-lol) and I got Atlanta Cams and the news-and I was glued to my computer. I used to live in boring Montgomery Alabama for 4 years and we had 4-5" hail at my house and.. I heard a "roar". Colorado is so sedate :) LOVE ATLANTA!

I am a National Weather Service certified, trained storm spotter, and this is not a tornado. This is what is known as a scud cloud, seen on the top right of the cloud formation with a trailing rain streak (location of heavy rain) behind the leading scud cloud. Just because there is rotation doesn't mean it is a tornado. A tornado means rotation extends from the cloud base to the ground, whether a funnel is visible or not.

I was working in Banks Crossing when one of the tornadoes went up I-85. The sirens went off and we had golf ball sized hail preceding the tornado. Around 1pm it was as dark as 9pm just before it all went down.

@cameron18able Oh it was. People lived with this notion that a tornado would NEVER hit downtown ATL because of all the buildings close together, but that myth was exposed that day. I live in Decatur which is 13 minutes from downtown Atlanta. That storm was horrible. I remember running for the basement with my mother that day. Never been that scared before. Thank God WSB and the ATL news market for keeping us up to date because we dont have tornado sirens in this part of DeKalb County.

The pictures Dr. Forbes saw were from March 14th.
In fact Dr. Forbes is aware of this video and is the one who told me it WAS NOT A TORNADO

    Probably 1 of two reasons.
    1. To gather data on the tornado, We still don't fully understand tornadoes so they need people on the field to record data and also to pinpoint the exact location of the tornado.
    2. As stated by the others, for adrenaline. Being near a tornado or any other severe weather is unreal and gets ya all tensed. I know that cause I've been through 3 hurricanes so far. It's a serious adrenaline rush

I think the weather service issued a "Tornado Emergency" for this particular storm, but it wasn't a tornado. All the signs were there that there was rotation, but it just didn't touch the ground. IIRC, the only tornado to touch down in the Atlanta city limits was the March 14 Georgia Dome Tornado.
Remember, Glenn Burns love to hype storms. Should of heard him with the Mother's day storms... "Go Ahead and sleep in the basement tonight"

@josephamaker94 This was actually the day after the tornado that hit the Georgia Dome. I think millions of us saw this on TV and sent up a collective "Oh God" at the same time, because the storm just dissipated before it got to Downtown.

the tornado was there its rain wrapped inside that dark area as you can see not all tornadoes are visible some are wrapped by rain (like the atlanta tornado) and some u can see as clear as day. knowing so i live in atlanta and i saw the damage it left im pretty sure a full roof wouldnt have been gone from a house if it was a " wall cloud" i know what ive see i was at the basketball game when it hit. so you can see it was indeed infact a tornado

Tornadoes are so crazy, where I live buncombe county NC we don’t get tornadoes we’ve had less then 5 since 1900 and they all were around f1 surrounding areas don’t really get tornadoes either we have mountains to the north, west, and south of buncombe county it’s a great little buffer since tornadoes spawn in Dixie alley if we didn’t have mountains where we do we’d get tornadoes we’re in a path of Dixie alley and same can be said for weather coming in from the west the mountains bordering Tennessee disrupt a lot but when I was in elementary school we did tornado drills every once in a while although they were kinda pointless but if we do get tornadoes they haven’t gotten large than ef1 and they typically stay on ground like 100 yards nothing crazy but we had a tornado warning and as a kid in elementary school I was thinking oh shit this is happening it was just a coincidence but like I said they can’t really do a whole lot around here but the tornado touched down very very close to my neighborhood it’s dissipated not long after but you just never think it’s going to happen to you and you think even if they form as long as it’s not near you you’d be fine since they don’t really stay on ground here and it just so happened to touch down near my house

Actually last year in locust Grove GA in March we had a bad tornado although we didn’t take cover me and my sister woke up and we both were the only ones up in the morning so just waking up and heard the sirens go off so i thought u know it’s just my alarm and I make it down stairs to get breakfast and the sirens were still going on so I thought this siren sound familiar so I looked outside and all u see is dark dark clouds covering the sky forming a funnel so my mom was still sleep I went to ask my sister and she said she heard it. I went to turn the news on and we could see what the actual tornado looked like in Atlanta GA it was big and I was so scared so all I did was just goin my covers and scream and put my hands on my head under my bed so My mom woke up and the sirens stopped and boom the clouds disappeared and the sirens stopped I asked my mom did she here it? She said no she slept through all of it.
