The internet got triggered by some of the fouls Jalen Brunson drew in their 1st round series clinching Game 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers. Coach Nick brought on Ronnie Nunn, a 19 year NBA referee and head of officials for 5 more, to help break down one of the plays to see whether the foul was legit.

Even if it is aggregious foul-baiting, the 76ers have no right to be the ones to call it out 😂
EGREGIOUS*
^ok english teacher.
No because unlike Brunson you have to actually hack Embiid to stop him. Embiid isn’t 50 pounds so he doesn’t have to jump back into defenders
@@Haddonfield63 Embiid is the biggest flopper in the league. He tries to sell any level of contact. I'm not even a Knicks fan
@@alfredwong1741 u tap embid its foul he barrels thru defenders and they call foul
Every star player knows how to draw fouls, the thing about Brunson I respect is he’s not out there flailing his arms or legs out and just throwing up an airball thinking he got fouled then turning to yell at the ref. He punishes the defense for being too aggressive and tries to finish the play.
Except, he flails too, just not as much as others.
Exactly. And he’s actually trying to make the shot and not simply for the foul.
Not Jokic unfortunately 😂
Agreed. What I see is a player genuinely trying to use his footwork and wiggling to get a good shot. He's not jerking his head or flailing his arms. I see a player genuinely drawing a foul
Maybe that's why embiid got injured so easily. He flail in the air and it disturbed his landing motion
Brunson is strong and legit. That's it.
He's a smaller James Harden. That's it.

FACTS bro!!! LOLOLOL
He not jumping back into the defender lol
That was a nice adjustment by Brunson. In games 1 and 2 he was getting grabbed and hacked like crazy while doing the hostage dribble, which ended up in turnovers and missed shots.
Instead of whining and shouting to the refs he decided to use defenders aggressiviness against them.

Meanwhile, Dirty Embiid had been maiming the whole Knicks team without a call.
Ask Joel Embiid what foul baiting is
Brunson isn’t doing anything different that the great players have always done. It’s called having a high basketball IQ.
You are correct. He is jumping and shooting before the defender is aware it is going to happen. Which causes the defenders momentum to send him crashing into Brunson.
Never thought I’d heard some call Brunson “springy” 😂😂😂
Not in jumping high but getting up quick
Its crazy how philly fans cried so much people had to make videos disproving them
People shouldnt conflate foul bait with illegal. This was intentional in that brunson punishes d for undisciplined defense. Thats not foul baiting. Foul baiting is hoping for a whistle over making a play at the rim. Brunson legitimately goes for shots and big brains defenders.
Exactly!
Every great scorer has tricks to get free throws.Brunson is one of best at taking good shots when drawing fouls. He almost never throws up wild shots just for free throws like Embiid or Trae Young. Both of those guys literally throw themselves into defenders and volleyball spike off the backboard as their "shot attempt".
@@BrooklynBalla Exactly. I wrote this on a Philly podcast page and they can’t cope with this. 👇🏾
Brunson does not jump backwards. Here’s the difference between him and Trae for clarification:
Trae Young veers/launches himself off his path INTO defenders initiating contact.
Brunson stops abruptly, goes STRAIGHT UP and remains in his shooting cylinder, at that point the undisciplined defender RUNS INTO HIM! (For your own curiosity PLEASE slow down the footage of the Oubre and Batum fouls and tell me he’s not stopping abruptly and going straight up. He’s not fucking jumping backwards, cope all you want). That’s the key. He’s IN HIS SHOOTING CYLINDER and going straight up.
It’s so simple to understand 🤷🏾♂️ And especially in Oubre’s case he’s crowding and leaning over Brunson which is legal for Oubre to do, but once Brunson begins to rise into his shooting motion Oubre is not allowed to hinder his upward motion.
Let’s get to the head snap on the Batum and Oubre fouls: Brunson does snap his head back mid-air but only AFTER the defender runs into him (again, slow down the footage and watch for your own curiosity)to signal to the ref that he was fouled. While I dislike the head snap, it has no effect on the fact he was fouled prior. You want to stop committing fouls? Then be more disciplined and avoid RUNNING INTO players once they begin a legal shooting motion. It’s so simple. His footwork and timing is so elite defenders struggle with.
@chrisstfort7 that's the realest comment of a breakdown play 💯
@@chrisstfort7this is an oversimplification. Most of the times trae also just stops and jumps straight up. Their techniques /strategy is much closer than you make it seem.
I agree with you that its not illegal what brunson does and Defenders should be aware, however, defender need reaction time when brunson suddenly stops. Its almost impossible to avoid the contact for the defender, especially as you can clearly see that brunson cuts them off (which is legal). Tldr: while its legal the outcome is inevitable: the defender will slam into brunson. I personally hate it.

@@Haddonfield63 Trae Young would jump sideways or backwards to initiate contact and fling the ball at the rim. James Harden would hook the defender's arm and go up for shots to draw fouls. Jalen Brunson stops on a dime when the defender doesn't expect it and rises straight up for jumpers or floaters with the intention of making the shot. A foul is just an added bonus if the defender is not in position, which is why Brunson is one of the league leaders in making and-ones.

Thank you. Oubre was reaching over him for the strip and he sensed it and went up to draw contact. You reach, I teach.
What great timing, I just watched this game as I wasn't able to last night. (too late for my timezone) It is good to focus in on these plays, which indeed seemed like a foulbaiting move when watching the game. Batum pulling his jersey is well spotted and most likely does affect his motion, while the other move he clearly isn't moving backwards in any way, he is going straight up, maybe not realizing how close Oubre was.
I love these kinds of breakdowns, fitting the aptly named channel quite well. Thanks coach!

What is Brunson supposed to do?
Drive by a defender and go straight into a player that is a foot taller than him?
He drove by, got space, so insread of charging into much bigger defender, he stops and takes the shot.
Common sense.
Very old school technique. I was doing this back in the 90’s when I was a teenager.

Sixers fans complaining about Brunson have no shame. They have the most egregious flopper in the NBA who’s injured his own teammate with his flopping.
These drive and stop moves with the defender behind are just next level plays and also don't agree that he's looking for contact, the defenders just don't have the discipline to guard him from behind without fouling. What I do think is borderline foul-baiting is when he's driving round a pick or trying to get past a defender and he snaps his head back. Not to the same extend as Reaves who will likely need neck surgery in the off-season, but I still see it from Brunson here and there. I wish he wouldn't do it.
I agree on the head snap back when he’s driving and I wish he would remove this from his repertoire. I think he does it to signal that he’s being grabbed or bumped off his spot.
His jumpers however are not baiting. He stops abruptly and jumps straight up and remains in his shooting cylinder. The undisciplined defender then runs into him as he’s elevating…or in Oubre’s case he’s crowding the space above Brunson and impinging Brunson’s elevation making it a defensive foul. It takes elite footwork to master this.
At no point does Brunson veer/launch himself off his path into a defender to initiate contact like a Trae Young frequently does, that’s the difference. Brunson jumps straight up and remains in his shooting cylinder.
i swear to god bro i hate when austin reaves does that shit it 's so unnatural and forced😤😤
Bronson simply stopped for the J and jumped upward with no backward, foul baiting movement. It's the same movement he makes on almost all his Js. The only difference were these two cases the defender lost control trying to chase him from behind expecting him to go a bit deeper in the paint, but because of his size, Bronson has to stop a bit before others.
Meanwhile Embiid was committing all types of egregious and potential injury causing fouls and hardly any 76ers fans said a thing.
Basic drill a coach I played for had us run in Highschool was to drive baseline and absorb the contact of the defender and make the And 1 basket.
Basic basketball principle, You drive to the lane to make the shot or draw the foul.
Only casuals see it as “foul baiting”
Brunsons moves are legit. He uses the fact that the defenders are way to close behind him, stops on a dime and lifts vertically (against Oubrey jr.) or even slightly forward away from the defender (Batum). The defenders are the ones responsible for the contact. A different thing would be the moves of Trae Young who often tries to make contact to the defender by moving laterally or even backwards. Those moves are not legit.
Another aspect is that Brunson is quite short for an NBA player, so the top of his head is very often under the chin of the larger player typically guarding him. If he's being guarded by a smaller player like Dame for instance, this type of contact doesn't occur.
Meanwhile the refs were giving out free throws like they were candy to Embiid.
Jb breaks franchise record without throwing a tantrum.
I think it’s a completely legal form of foul baiting. Like Brunson knows what he’s doing but he’s jumping forward it straught up, simply taking advantage of the momentum of the defender, not forcibly jumping into the defender
Since when is it "not basketball" to hesitate or change pace when you've got the defender "in jail?" 😂
Plus which you're entitled to your verticality.
Swear they stopped CP3 from doing this 😂
Big fan of Brunson
They just mad they can’t stop him, guard better and stop complaining
great analysis
not to mention the amount of times oubre and batum were holding and pulling brunson off the ball with no whistle
Let’s face it, in today’s game…most of the players foul bait and flop. But some guys take it to defcon 5.
Coach, I was texting w/ my brother this morning, and he suggested that Brunson might be the best free agent signing in the history of ALL sports. I did a little digging, and only found a couple that truly compare favorably.
1. Drew Brees to the New Orleans Saints. Coming off an injury, not established as much more than a basic NFL QB,
2. David Ortiz to the Red Sox. 58 HRs in 6 seasons w/ the Twins. 3 titles, an MVP, and makes it to the Hall of Fame.
The Knicks have been a basketball graveyard for the entire century so far. We've needed a top PG since Clyde retired.
Brunson has gone from a backup PG to a probable All-NBA team, AND leading the NBA in postseason scoring while Luka, Jocic, Embiid, LeBron, Harden, Shai, Edwards and Kyrie are all in their primes and playing incredible....
Thoughts?
That’s because he’s a lot stronger than he looks trust me as a Knicks fan he used to get fouled a lot and they didn’t call it so defense took advantage…so now he makes it obvious for them to call one by baiting remember last year Miami series the refs said he flopped then 2min report would say he was fouled multiple times so this season he adjusted
Man, I don't want to hear anything about a little point guard like brunson "foul-baiting" because what brunson is doing is using his quickness and low center of gravity to create these situations and, most importantly, hes still almost always looking to make the shot. Unlike guys like embiid or old school harden who obviously have no intention of actually making some of these "shots". Brunson is a bit of an enigma, he should be andre miller out there but instead, hes this odd mix of kyrie and kyle lowry that makes him one of the all time great short guy scorers
I just think it’s hilarious that a team with Embid AND Lowry is complaining about baiting and flopping
🤣🤣🤣
When you are playing a game like basketball, you have to use your brain and your body at the same time. That is the game! That is why it is called game! Folks just can't stop Jalen Brunson. The guy is soooo great, sooo skilled that people can't believe their eyes. Thaty have never seen someone playing like Brunson in the history of basketball.
It takes balls to post this from a series that had embiid in it
They only mad cause they want to see the Knicks lose. HA HA Get over it !!!! Embid get the best whistle in NBA history, Brunson is just very smart and technical
observation: Brunson jumps a lot from 2 feet to get the power upwards that you need to bow the knee a bit to get fro 1 footed jumps.
with the diffrence in momentum he also jumps more vertial than players would expect out of the movement.
lower cetner of gravity clearly plays a role in the movement here.
@@hansoskar1911 yawn trolll
he’s gathering the ball and shooting it all in one motion therefore out-timing his opponent…in traffic laws when you get hit from the back its always going to be the fault of the guy behind you..its up to Batum to watch that Brunson doesn’t stop short and bangs into him…what’s a non-basketball play is when a player breaks through the defenders hands or arms while he’s merely playing defense without reaching for the ball…it totally defeats the purpose of playing defense which is naturally part of the game.
Appreciate this as a Pacers fan! At full speed it's not easy to tell these things and it can be frustrating. Dude is a beast!
It's funny that every single game the narrative is "he's not the quickest or most explosive or tallest" then wonder if he's foul baiting because he has to do different things to get his shot. He doesn't have those tools so he heavily relies on changing tempo and footwork. No way you can call that foul baiting meanwhile Embiid is turning down wide open short range jumpers that he makes 99 out of 100 times to try and seek contact right under the rim with a layup
Man Idc what you say… this is not a foul in any other league but nba. Offensive players allowed to push off create all this contact.
Embiid was called for multiple offensive fouls for hitting his defender in the face when the defender had his head beyond embiids toes. It was inconsistent
I would be a fan of his grit if his game wasnt a eyesore, all the flopping and foul baiting is annoying af.
One thing i hate about foul baiting the most
I can see when it happens so the refs surely can see it either
I don't wanna see all these "rip through", "found the contact", "leaning towards the defender" stuff
They said it's the rules
Really? Are they even written? I doubt it. And even if they does exist, my question is why?
So my conclusion is, the NBAs interpretation of the rules sucks and they want them to suck
Nowadays it's better than a couple of years ago tho, when i really started to hate NBA refs
I can't hear this "oh he is so smart he found the contact" anymore. This is not basketball when somebody is trying to fk the fans and viewers and gets rewarded.
Not talking about Brunson in particular but we all know some names like Harden or Young or Embiid, this should not be the case. Stop rewarding foul baiting, nobody prevents you from that. And stop talkin bs about how smart it is.
I know they've taken steps to reduce the baiting before, I don't think it's easy though. As much as people complain about Embiid, he does get legitimately fouled a lot, too. I honestly think they need to start punishing embellishment, it'll make things a little easier to see when players aren't flailing around, and the refs can focus on actual illegal contact.
But yeah, just earlier this series we had Brunson on the floor and Lowry purposefully trips himself on him to get 3 FT's, things like that is just completely ridiculous. Obvious non-basketball plays should not be rewarded.
Foul baiting is only acceptable when your team is using it and winning let's just keep it a buck.
He's just quick AF and defenders can't stop in time.
The difference between Trae Young and Jalen Brunson is that Young was jumping backwards into the defender whereas Brunson clearly isn’t.
Players have been foul baiting long before jalen brunson came into the league. He's just really good at drawing contact to get to the line
I don’t even listen to Ronnie Nunn anymore because I know he just wants to call everything.
If Brunson jumps straight up I agree, give him the call, but if he is jumping backwards or into a defender that’s behind him, offensive foul.
He is literally bumping dudes’ face with these plays. I hate watching it; can we empower defense for once?!
Philly fans need to leave the room whenever there's a foul baiting conversation
Sixers fans should be the last fans complaining about FOUL-BAITING
Theyve been doing this for years lol. At the end of the day, players will always do things to get an advantage
You can also tell he’s a professional head snapper. Look how thiccccc his neck is from all those reps. Sad the refs continue to fall for it
Brunsons power is that he’s stronger than all the guards, that’s why he plays closer to basket…he seeks contact, these new dudes look for switches and avoid physicality 😂🤦🏾♂️
I’m waiting on Embiids video just like this. Dude gets more whistles than anyone. Brunson “forces the defender to make contact with him”. While Embiid “forces contact with the defender”, and still it’s a foul on defense. The different is Huge.
Crazy how no one wanted to talk about the kincks let alone brunson in the regular season but now that they beat a team that was a "favorite" to go deep everyone wants to cry about it 😂
If twolves vs knicks in the finals it would be an epic battle of MJ's son and Bron's son
It’s funny everyone says he’s foul baiting but he’s also making the shot after the contact 😂
I never thought I'd see the day that someone would have the narrative that they outflop Joel Embiid
Has a player ever dm'd you being like " couldn't wait till after playoffs?" 😆
Big Body Brunson is smart! He's learned to be great without being born with the natural advantage of most NBA players. We need more dudes like him! Just because you may not fit the mold of what an NBA player is supposed to look like, doesn't mean you don't have to talent to be great in the NBA. JB, everyday on my team! LGK
What Brunson is doing is what small guards have been doing for years like CP3, Mike Conley, Curry, and Dame for example
So Jalen Brunson gets the video because the Knicks won? I know we all watched Joel Embiid hunt for fouls for 6 games.
A big man falling all over the floor and crying for fouls is terrible.
Can't believe the nba bribed one of my favorite youtubers to meatmunch brunson
Lol, Brunson's foul baiting was different from Trae's intentionally jumping backwards into defender/jumping sideward to the defender's path;
and different from Harden's intentionally swinging his arms into defenders which Kd, Book, Cp3 and others copied.
Lol I mean you could do this with mostly every player in the league especially embiid.
Embiid actually draws many fouls in far less subtle ways. They are clear to spot though, as Embiid always accentuates the contact.
Embiid looks for the contact on every drive. Sometimes the refs don't blow the whistle and he looks stupid.
Brunson, Jokic and Luka are changing the game.
Excellent video analysis
Chris Paul used to be a master at this. Stopping suddenly so defender runs into him, jumping *backwards* or *sideways* into the defender. I think this should be a no call , and I see many times refs don't call it because it's clear JB is initiating it
At least it's not flopping
Damn the whole world hates cuz… they made a video about it to show their hate
You do realize that this vid is defending him right?
Ubrie was draped all over his back. Brunson has every right to go up for a shot.
Embid shot 21 free-throws i repeat 21 free-throws in one game . He also has more free throws than Brunson in the season despite playing half as many games . Embid averages 12 free-throws a game 12 . JB averages not even half of that . Considering how many Flagrant 2 fouls Philly clearly committed that weren't called.JB foul hunting isn't why Philly lost more, so Embid disappeared in the 4 quarter 4 out of 5 games averaged 1 rebound in the 4 quarter 4 out of 6 games .Philly, stop making excuses for Embid. It's time to move on from him, period .😂
Jalen Brunson ELITE FOOTWORK 💯
It’s smart it’s a adjustment from Brunson from the chase from behind block, they want to run up then stop on a dime!
Curry has been doing this for years
Going on the off foot is somethign I first saw Tony Parker doing a lot. Its critical for a shorter guy to catch teh defense off guard so they can finish over, basically eveyr other taller player.
Even Harden isnt getting calls like these anymore. League is going to make sure the Pacers stand no chance
