  • A couple of video's ago I brought home a 1964 Chevy Nova 2 door post. A very original and fairly rust free car. I mentioned I paid 5 grand for it and a few people thought I grossly over paid.
I think I got a very fair deal on a really solid builder. Can you find me some complete rust free muscle cars for $500? Send me the links and pictures.
    dan@ddspeedshop.ca
The price of cars has absolutely sky rocketed over the past few years. Not only are the cars expensive but so are the parts! Sometimes it's nice to pay a few more dollars for a complete car that will save time and money down the road.
What do you think? was I ripped off?

I want in on these 500 dollar novas!!! I mean I know it depends on the area you live but, I’m down south with less rust and I couldn’t touch the nova you have for probably less than 5k. I’ve see some 74 ups go for less but those are going up in price as well. I paid 1200 for a 68 nova “roller” no axle! Which ended up being way to far gone.

Dan, you are incredibly correct. I blast cars for a living and in talking with my customers I see how much they pay for way worse than that. and they are happy with it. if you want something, you pay up for it then wrench it to what you want. the days of 500 dollar cars (and trucks) are long gone.

it's more that people realized how much value a car that you can replace mechanical parts when needed and drive away is worth more then a car that needs 20+ hours of diagnostics to find a bad sensor having to do with something stupid like interior air temperature and then having to spend the money to replace it, the time to get to it, the time to replace it, you hope it works, find out it doesn't , find out no one will take electrical returns once installed, car still doesn't run right...and you could have torn out a SBC rebuilt it , and reinstalled it in that time.

maybe add $5k to 10k for a factory grade paint job..........(canadian prices)
meanwhile half the guys bidding against me have $50k+ in pocket for the resto they plan but want the car for $500 like its still the 80s....do they think the owners dont know that?

Sounds like what always happens to me. As soon as I purchase anything, it doesn't matter what it is, two things happen. #1 a whole bunch of people tell me I overpaid for it, and I am a big idiot. #2 if I ever try to turn around and sell it, doesn't matter how much everyone was saying it was worth BEFORE I bought it, I have offers for less than half what I paid for it, after I've put a bunch of work into it, and made it run, and stuff. I resign myself to knowing nothing I own is worth any thing, and it will just get scrapped when I can't ressurrect it any more.

I really enjoyed this video. Good for you to call out the "experts". Anyone who finds one of these for $500 is going to find out the hard way that rust repair will run you $1000/ day if you pay a competent shop. You'll be up over 5k in a week and it won't be anywhere near finished. Rust free 2-door cars are worth money for a reason.
Also: remember that unlimited money printing to prop up a failing-ponzi-scheme financial system does eventually result in the destruction of the currency. Every fiat currency goes to zero in the end; spend it while it still buys anything at all! Cheers from Alberta!

Sooooo TRUE. It takes $5000 to buy a halfway decent, roadworthy inspection ready used car. Some nit-wits still living 40 to 50 years ago think they can still buy such a car for $500.😄 Maybe if these used car dealers wised up they will realizer that 12 to 15 year old junk with 200,000 plus miles on them is only worth so much. $15k for a 2009 ford truck with +210k on the odometer😄

Agree Dan those $500 dollar car days are over. Depending on the vehicle prices vary much these days. I was very lucky finding a virtual rust free 71 Pontiac Lemans shell to replace my rusted shell, and it came with a frame and title for $400!

The guys who think it was only a 500 dollar car havent looked at anything since 1992. I've been looking around lately and practically anything listed for sale under 4 grand is a rolling pile of shit that usually has no floors, no quarter panels, and hasn't run since Nixon was in office.

You hit it on the head with these prices. You should see them down here in Phoenix AZ. I just found a clean running 71 Pinto for 5k. 🤦

The people complaining are the same ones who will sign a loan for a 50 to 100k new car/truck that depreciates in value as soon as it's driven off the lot and will continue to depreciate for the rest of its life. Yes old car prices have gone up, but it's all relative. It's still possible to build an old car into a reliable year round daily driver for under 15k Canadian, it will get you from point A to B just as good as an overpriced new car and it's only going to increase in value.

My father paid $300 for a 1957 Chevy 210 2dr sedan, (283 4bbl with automatic, Calypso Cream) and drove it home of the dealer lot................back in 1967!
He also bought a 1956 Chevy 210 2dr sedan (Two tone green) from a salvage yard for $25 ( yes $25) back in 1972. Unstuck the motor, the car was still in good shape and sold it to my future uncle for $50 one month latter who drove it daily for a few years.
Yep those $500 cars are still out there! providing you can turn back time.

Thankfully Dan, I bought my UK GM project (1974 Vauxhall Viva HC with 19,480 miles from new) back in 2013 for £1300. One went for over £15,000 a few weeks ago... absolutely insane. I ripped out the crappy 1256cc engine, gearbox & axle when it came home! It's now got a tiny 4.6 V8 from a 2nd gen Range Rover with 300 ponies... plenty in a car that weighs 950kgs.

I'm 65, when I was in my 20's and 30's you could buy classic 50's and 60's Chevy's for $500. I bought a 57 Belair, 2 door post, running and driving, in grey primer, missing the bumpers, with a 283 and 4 speed for $500. But that was in the late 1970's. Today that car is probably $15,000. Around the same time I bought a 67 GTO, super clean, running good, original paint and interior for $1800. A few years after that I bought a 71 RS Z28 in perfect condition for $3500. Today those cars would be far, far out of my reach financially unless they were rusted hulks.

I'd love to see you get your buddy's John and Cecil to go through your big block with just a lil port work and the right cam you can make 550 hp no problem. It's already got the look nice solid lift with a nice stall speed and that 9 inch man o man

$500.00 for a square body Chevy II or Nova? My asteroid! I bought a clapped-out Barracuda shell with almost no usable parts for $1700.00. Like you, I did a video on cheap hot rods but nothing for $500.00. $5000.00 for decent Chevy II is on par. Tell your viewers to get their heads out of their pasts. Shoots it takes $8,000.00 to buy a decent Gremlin!

I bought my 63 Nova 6cyl post for $150. Umm, I believe that was 48 years ago? LOL Last week I snagged a 93 C1500 WT 6cyl with 88,000 miles, original paint, zero rust for $7500. Truck should have brought $12,000. Was looking for a clean T100 for less than $15,000. I was dreaming! Not that many deals left out there. Find someone giving up half way through a build can fetch a good deal if they didn't butcher it.
