- A couple of video's ago I brought home a 1964 Chevy Nova 2 door post. A very original and fairly rust free car. I mentioned I paid 5 grand for it and a few people thought I grossly over paid.
I think I got a very fair deal on a really solid builder. Can you find me some complete rust free muscle cars for $500? Send me the links and pictures.
dan@ddspeedshop.ca
The price of cars has absolutely sky rocketed over the past few years. Not only are the cars expensive but so are the parts! Sometimes it's nice to pay a few more dollars for a complete car that will save time and money down the road.
What do you think? was I ripped off?

I'm still waiting on the rust free hotrods for 500 bucks. Nothing in my email yet
I figured it would be full of emails by now. 😂
Fuck that, I'm buying them.
Don't get old waiting there Danny-Boy ....
$500 doesn't buy your Novas doors down here. $5k isn't a bad price, at all. Don't let the idiots get to you. Guys are grumpy because they don't have the $$ to buy and fix anything up, so they hate on the guy that does.
I want in on these 500 dollar novas!!! I mean I know it depends on the area you live but, I’m down south with less rust and I couldn’t touch the nova you have for probably less than 5k. I’ve see some 74 ups go for less but those are going up in price as well. I paid 1200 for a 68 nova “roller” no axle! Which ended up being way to far gone.
Dan, you are incredibly correct. I blast cars for a living and in talking with my customers I see how much they pay for way worse than that. and they are happy with it. if you want something, you pay up for it then wrench it to what you want. the days of 500 dollar cars (and trucks) are long gone.
Unfortunately your right
Anyone who thinks this car would be 500, have 0 clue about cars
hello ya for sure here in texas they want 20 grand and they need everything .
While watching this I thought "He should have done this, and he should have done that". Then I reflected on my poor decisions. So.... you're fine... carry on. Cheers from the shed
😂😂 c'mon man... We are armchair mechanics. We know it all. 😂😂✌️🇺🇸
Do like Randahl does--drive the one that got you there...😆
@@rustynutz7158 Yea, I forgot about that! 😆
Are you related to the guy in the VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!🤣🤣

You are absolutely right Dan. Car prices have gone through the roof. Us poor people are priced out of the hobby now.
it's more that people realized how much value a car that you can replace mechanical parts when needed and drive away is worth more then a car that needs 20+ hours of diagnostics to find a bad sensor having to do with something stupid like interior air temperature and then having to spend the money to replace it, the time to get to it, the time to replace it, you hope it works, find out it doesn't , find out no one will take electrical returns once installed, car still doesn't run right...and you could have torn out a SBC rebuilt it , and reinstalled it in that time.
Plus this damn electric car push they are making things for these older cars more expensive! Parts, oil, gas, etc.
The people that created the hobby are now being screwed, By idiots with Much money and no brains.
worse yet is for the $75k a new truck costs, i can do a full resto mod on an classic and have all the reliability and beauty and everything and still have $40k++ in my pocket in any colour i want and none of the damn techy beeping and blooping garbage.....and thats if i pay someone else to do a bunch of the work that i cant.........and its a "new car/truck" full of new parts etc.......
maybe add $5k to 10k for a factory grade paint job..........(canadian prices)
meanwhile half the guys bidding against me have $50k+ in pocket for the resto they plan but want the car for $500 like its still the 80s....do they think the owners dont know that?
So true
Brilliant, youre Absouletey right, people are living in the past 500 wouldn't even cover your shipping, maybe if you found some hoarder with a field full of cars you could get a deal but not without needing a ton of work, people do just talk a load of crap!
Exactly !
You cant get rusty old trash here in Ga for less than a grand or 2 😂😂
Agree with you Dan. Things have gotten out of my price range. You actually have several things going for you. 1. You can do all the work yourself. 2. You have the support of your wife. 3. You are an entertaining character and knowledgeable in all aspects of automotive repair (why I think your RUclips channel has been successful). Thank you for your dedication to the hot rod community; love the videos!
They really haven't gotten out of your price range, you have think outside the box. You may not be able to afford a 72 Chevelle but you can afford a 75 Chevelle, Maybe you can't afford a 65 Mustang, but you can afford a 76 Thunderbird/Torino, You may not be able to afford a 69 Charger but you can afford a 74 Duster or 75 Aspen/Volare.... a cool classic car is a cool classic car no matter what the year is. The mid-late 70's "Smog" cars are the hottest wave going on in hot rodding/classic cars right now, atleast out here in the West/Southwest. Go get you one of these and build away.....
Yeah just gotta keep your eyes open. Stuff comes up here and there.
Sounds like what always happens to me. As soon as I purchase anything, it doesn't matter what it is, two things happen. #1 a whole bunch of people tell me I overpaid for it, and I am a big idiot. #2 if I ever try to turn around and sell it, doesn't matter how much everyone was saying it was worth BEFORE I bought it, I have offers for less than half what I paid for it, after I've put a bunch of work into it, and made it run, and stuff. I resign myself to knowing nothing I own is worth any thing, and it will just get scrapped when I can't ressurrect it any more.
This made me laugh! I think I end up in similar situations
Straight facts.
I agree Dan, prices are outrageous. You are doing great.
It’s your money Dan. It doesn’t matter if you paid 5,000 or 10,000 or 20,000 is your dang money. 👍😎✌️
Good point Kevin, when people talk about what I'm buying my response is..."did I ask you for the money"?
Unfortunately Dan you are correct. The days of finding "cheap" hot rods are over. We can that Barrett-Jackson and Mecum for that!!!!
Don't forget shows like storage wars and American pickers. According to these shows, everything is worth gold. And unfortunately, people will believe just about everything they see on TV.
I agree with you Dan, especially up here in Canada 🇨🇦.
So hard to find a car worth fixing for less than 5K.
5 grand these days is the 500 of a good few years ago !
80's F and G body rollers are going for 10k in my area. There may be deals out there, but I haven't seen any in a while.
It's crazy!
Noticed Danni's car still doesn't have a front bumper.... LOL
5k is a good price! Especially relatively rust free!
Hey balljoints are $25/pc uppers greaseless cheapest and lowers around $35 /pc at Rock Auto cheapest .Where does $60 come from,LOLLL! is that the shipping too? What are they gold plated?????HAAA! You do spend money way beyond the norm for junk cars but thats understandable to your lifestyle with your channel..I know someday youll slow down so ride it as long as you can and have fun and keep us entertained......Frank
Seeing the kid on the bicycle stop and waving, man that takes me right back to the 1960's and us kids checking out cool cars in the neighborhood. Maybe the kid wants to learn about cars.
You can certainly tell Danny is a true woman the way she grabbed that CASH off the trunk of the chevy
I’ll take all you got for a thousand apiece please 🙏 😂😂😂
Somebody stated its a $500 car all day long. Thats bullshit! Please show me where these cars are "$500 all day long" because I'd like to buy several of them! I'm serious. Honestly I'd say the cars is worth about $3500 as is right now. $500. ?....yea maybe 35 to 40 years ago. One could buy a real nice tri-5 chevy 2 door hard top for about $3000 40 years ago. same car in same condition now in 2-23 , about $25,000 atleast.
Been looking for a 62 - 65 chevyll 2dr for my old man and yeah no such thing as a 500$ one and if it is then it's better off as a legit parts car good rollers are around 3k with maybe glass and trim... think you made out on it decent at 5k
Are you still looking for a front bumper for Dani’s 57 Chevy. That might blow that $500. 😮
I belong to FB forums for vehicles I am into. You have those internet smart guys who supposedly find $500 classics all day long. Ignore them....they are wrong or living off memories of 20 years ago!
Three things I try to never talk about on the internet (and with the general public for that matter) is politics, religion, and prices.
I give you the fact that the pricing in Canada is far more outrageous then some parts of the US. I've been building mainly trucks for 40 years, the price on trucks I've gone through the roof. Anyway I like what you do, I don't always agree but it's your projects not mine. I'm sure if I videoed what I was up to people to be screaming and yelling at me too 😂 just keep on keep en on Dan 👍✌️🇺🇲
I really enjoyed this video. Good for you to call out the "experts". Anyone who finds one of these for $500 is going to find out the hard way that rust repair will run you $1000/ day if you pay a competent shop. You'll be up over 5k in a week and it won't be anywhere near finished. Rust free 2-door cars are worth money for a reason.
Also: remember that unlimited money printing to prop up a failing-ponzi-scheme financial system does eventually result in the destruction of the currency. Every fiat currency goes to zero in the end; spend it while it still buys anything at all! Cheers from Alberta!
It amazes me how many times people give you grief. That's the fun of watching the videos!! Go DD Speed Shop!! Cheers!! 🤓
Spend your money anyway u want to.
Could not agree more ! Thanks for everything you do for us .
Thanks for this, Dan. I paid $4K for a project recently and IMMEDIATELY doubted the sanity of my decision. I feel better now! Thanks again and keep up the good fight! Cheers! 😁
Go get em Dan and Dani 500 Hell I would be into that deal as well they gotta be clapped out frame ready to fall out for 500 HA dreamers
Yeah, there's always somebody who can get it cheaper. They can also do it faster than you can, and it will be Pebble Beach quality when they're done. And if you do what YOU do, and succeed at it, they have nothing but venom for it. I enjoy watching you, and it's motivating me to go find a wreck of my own to get running and driving. I wish you and Danni all the best, and many more years of having fun and pissing off he internet.
A dozen eggs that I used to buy for 49 cents is now 4 dollars. Neat rollers have followed these crazy prices.
Some of the prices of these cars that people are asking makes you wonder if they're trying to finance their retirement. By the way, I'm probably more of a hack.😀
1PugLife knows the real value of cars. He has a yard full of them.
You are the best Dan , say what’s on your mind . That little Chevy Duce is a car you wanted and you will impress us with what ever you do to it ( in Canadian dollars)
That’s a $5,000 car all day. The other guys are living in the 90s
Car was priced fair in Canadian $$$$ in my humble opinion.
To put things into perspective, the 2 pistons for nitrous Harley were $636. Not including my 3 hours labor to gas port, balance, and pin fit.
So the 2 cost $1000.
2 pistons.
Love your videos, awesome con tent you never over paid
Well I tell you what since you've been converting the four doors and to do doors you won't find a running driving complete four-door 55 Chevrolet in Mississippi for less than 10 grand.
"THANKS DAN" 😅
Dan, you just keep being you, and i will always watch your videos. You and Dani are straight up genuine, and I am glad you share your escapades with us.
Great barn find. You won't hurt, most barn finds have been sitting under a tree outdoors for25+ years and in the barn for 6 months. ✌BARN FIND✌...🖕!
Thank you for sharing Danny it is what it is and it's the real keep it real thank you it's whatever someone's willing to pay it all the people are full of sh##
Good reality check, Dan. Also - Dani's car looks great, but, uh, where's the Bumper?
YOU GOT A GOOD DEAL
Dan, agree 110%. Things ain't cheap. I would also add: $5000 Canadian dollars is currently $3700 USD.
Dan, would you believe, I bought a '65 Chevy II 2dr post in 1977 from a city tow auction for $18.00 CDN. No keys so I towed it home and got it running without even having to charge the battery. The body was straight and almost rust free too. Those were the days!
Sometimes I'm amazed I can still afford a cardboard box to live in!
LUXURY!! we live in a rolled up newspaper
I noticed that your tri-5 hot rod still has its front bumper (odd considering how much you hate them), yet Dani's still doesn't. How odd... 😁
I paid in the covid times alot for a challenger shell.... more than i ever wanted to pay- sad thing is its doubled in value since.... scary stuff
Last year I purchased a 55 Ford for $4000. It was basically a piece of junk. I have since put in $8000. In it and not done. Compared to my Ford your Nova is a Jewel. I’d like to know where these $500. cars are. I don’t worry about what people say. I like your Nova and it’s in very good shape for the year and price. Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t pay attention to these people.
Hell I wish I knew where there was some $500 hot rods. 😂😂😂😂 they damn sure aren’t in Oklahoma
Do you know how hard it is to find an old car anymore like that and I think a car is worth about $5000 to $6000. Nobody likes what you buy tell me to turn off what you buy I don’t have to watch it right DD
Dan the man is correcto! Prices are to the moon. People think they have a sack of gold. The ones that are sitting in peoples yards that they don’t want to sell because they’re building them in the future will eventually be in the scrap yard. Big Dan is still the man! Build on boss
My 47 Chevrolet fleetline got it for $275. My 48 Pontiac sedan coupe $375. The guy had 200 that yard, cars they went for scrap prices. Sucks for him it cost me more to bring the cars home. His other yard was all 60s didn’t get to go to that auction but I hear he didn’t get what he was hoping for.
Dan I love the Nova do the right thing and put a small block in and make a good car of it don't listen to the crapp other people say
I just spent two grand restoring my 67 Camaro RS/SS hideaway headlights, three hundred for a washer pump and hose kit. Five for the car is a excellent price, especially here in Canada, rust has eaten a lot of good cars.
25 years ago it was a 1000 dollar car. Today’s prices 5000 is a good price for as solid as this thing is
Agreed, I bought a 77 f150 6 cylinder long bed 4 speed just to have a toy to tinker with. I got a decent deal because it needed small stuff but I can't afford to upgrade to a different car because they're priced out of my range. Keep up the good work and thanks for making horrible decisions to entertain me.
Typical of the Keyboard experts out there, bet they never turned a wrench before !
💯 Dan !! My impala was a rust bucket 8grand ..floor pan engine harness, 15grand later still needs body and paint. Phew..internet pricks 😂
Haha. Keep at it
They’re worth however much someone is willing to pay for them.
We’re can I find a bottom back seat for a 64 Chevy nova
Call them out Dan, I like it.
Een opel gt is hier in Nederland tussen de 10000 en 20000 duizend euro waard
Its a Good buy. 5k.. not bad.. Even for Texas. Ive got a 63 Nova 2. We want 7-8k.. Ive wanted to rant like you some times.. LOL. but Hey.. The Show must go on.. If you need cars.. Call me.. Not all so cheap.. But some good prices all around.. Later Dan
5K does seem like a lot of currency for the car. I understand prices are elevated so that’s what it costs. Hope that doesn’t cramp the style of some car guys. Enjoying your terrible videos alot!! Keep the struggle alive!
I'm with you Dan, where are these $500 cars.
I hear ya brother I bought a 1985 cadillac fleetwood brougham for $2800 and spent $2900 to get it running and driving. I have about $6000 in it and I'm very happy with it. It's worth that to me. Thanks for the great content brother!
Good for you Eddy, people need to stop pocket watching and pay their 800.00 car note. Have fun with the Caddy 🙏
@George hahaha! You're not wrong. Haha
Didn't Novas of that vintage have four lug wheels for the six cylinder cars? Maybe that's a v8 car that's been six cylinder swapped.
I believe novas went to 5 lug in 64. I had one from California 6 cylinder rust free 2 door sedan.
Ill Take ten of those $500.00 hotrods! You can't buy shit for less than 5K these days. If you do, guess what, you now own a serious pile of junk.
Sooooo TRUE. It takes $5000 to buy a halfway decent, roadworthy inspection ready used car. Some nit-wits still living 40 to 50 years ago think they can still buy such a car for $500.😄 Maybe if these used car dealers wised up they will realizer that 12 to 15 year old junk with 200,000 plus miles on them is only worth so much. $15k for a 2009 ford truck with +210k on the odometer😄
Agree Dan those $500 dollar car days are over. Depending on the vehicle prices vary much these days. I was very lucky finding a virtual rust free 71 Pontiac Lemans shell to replace my rusted shell, and it came with a frame and title for $400!
The guys who think it was only a 500 dollar car havent looked at anything since 1992. I've been looking around lately and practically anything listed for sale under 4 grand is a rolling pile of shit that usually has no floors, no quarter panels, and hasn't run since Nixon was in office.
You hit it on the head with these prices. You should see them down here in Phoenix AZ. I just found a clean running 71 Pinto for 5k. 🤦
There is definitely a glitch in The Matrix. 😆
The people complaining are the same ones who will sign a loan for a 50 to 100k new car/truck that depreciates in value as soon as it's driven off the lot and will continue to depreciate for the rest of its life. Yes old car prices have gone up, but it's all relative. It's still possible to build an old car into a reliable year round daily driver for under 15k Canadian, it will get you from point A to B just as good as an overpriced new car and it's only going to increase in value.
I paid $600 for my old nova…….40 years ago. A $500 car in todays world would be good door with scrap bolted to it.
My father paid $300 for a 1957 Chevy 210 2dr sedan, (283 4bbl with automatic, Calypso Cream) and drove it home of the dealer lot................back in 1967!
He also bought a 1956 Chevy 210 2dr sedan (Two tone green) from a salvage yard for $25 ( yes $25) back in 1972. Unstuck the motor, the car was still in good shape and sold it to my future uncle for $50 one month latter who drove it daily for a few years.
Yep those $500 cars are still out there! providing you can turn back time.
5 grand for that Nova is a steal!!!! That would be 8 grand here in NB all day long!!! I love that Nova
People may say they can get this or that for less money but I have people that let a car rust alway in the yard before they will sale them old cars are big money now
The Chevy II Nova was the first hot rod I ever rode in, 327 4 speed.
Hey bro, f*** those idiots , I really enjoy what you're doing , you show no fear on cutting into something!!!! I recently picked up a 57 Chevy 2 door delivery. I absolutely love the car Did a bunch upgrades With your encouragement. Keep up the good work. Martin
Thankfully Dan, I bought my UK GM project (1974 Vauxhall Viva HC with 19,480 miles from new) back in 2013 for £1300. One went for over £15,000 a few weeks ago... absolutely insane. I ripped out the crappy 1256cc engine, gearbox & axle when it came home! It's now got a tiny 4.6 V8 from a 2nd gen Range Rover with 300 ponies... plenty in a car that weighs 950kgs.
That sounds like a whole heap of fun . Hope you've put the rangy anchors in it as well .
You are the man .I watch most of your builds ,you get um done and on the road.thats what is up.
Unfinished projects are almost always the best,,,,IF you know what your looking at! Your advise is solid. Plus, talk to people, put the word out. Keep @ it DD,,,K,,,
Decent cars are extremely hard to come by right now find lots of rust buckets dead cheap
Great video, guys. I have a 62 impala 2 door 72 chevelle 2 door and a 79 trans am. All need a lot of work, but good luck on finding these for 500 bucks.
You’re right I guess the day of picking up old cars cheap is gone 😅
Ain’t that the truth Dan! I hear that all the time !
I have to say the prices of all classic cars and trucks have skyrock five to 10 years I agree with Dan car that used to be able to buy for 3500 is now worth 7 to$10,000 it's absolutely nuts I love watching your shows AKA RUclips videos good luck brother from another country
Thanks buddy!
Got to love it Dan tell it the way it is
People who think old cars are cheap are crazy this is the real world this is a new world it's not 1969 anymore they don't understand thatmy buddy has a 55 nomad he dropped it off at a body shop and said make it beautiful and they did it's a show car the body and paint were $100,000 yeah for real some of these people are just living in the Dreamland things cost money now I like your Channel it's great the $100 big black Chevy days are over people have to realize that have a great day
SPOT ON. When the numbers of cars is SHRINKING and the number of buyers is INCREASING, the price goes........up.
I'm 65, when I was in my 20's and 30's you could buy classic 50's and 60's Chevy's for $500. I bought a 57 Belair, 2 door post, running and driving, in grey primer, missing the bumpers, with a 283 and 4 speed for $500. But that was in the late 1970's. Today that car is probably $15,000. Around the same time I bought a 67 GTO, super clean, running good, original paint and interior for $1800. A few years after that I bought a 71 RS Z28 in perfect condition for $3500. Today those cars would be far, far out of my reach financially unless they were rusted hulks.
5g good deal cheap hotrod
It’s hard to believe but your exactly right on the prices we all wish we still had some of these cars that tripled the price in the last 25 years.
Other then the nomads the 55 is my favorite car you own I wish you would give that car the love it deserves. I'd love to see you get your buddy's John and Cecil to go through your big block with just a lil port work and the right cam you can make 550 hp no problem. It's already got the look nice solid lift with a nice stall speed and that 9 inch man o man
That bumper IS patina!
$500.00 for a square body Chevy II or Nova? My asteroid! I bought a clapped-out Barracuda shell with almost no usable parts for $1700.00. Like you, I did a video on cheap hot rods but nothing for $500.00. $5000.00 for decent Chevy II is on par. Tell your viewers to get their heads out of their pasts. Shoots it takes $8,000.00 to buy a decent Gremlin!
YUP....call them on their BS DAN...tell them to buy as many of these $500 cars as they can and you''ll give them $1000 for each!!! Everybody wins!! & the haters will disappear into their basements FFS!
I have to admit I am part of this problem!! I just sold a Very clean 2008 , Low KM,,4x4 Ranger for $13K (the going price) ...a Ranger that I bought for $9100 3 years ago!.(the going price then).....My bad!
Folks a few yrs back couldn't give those old chevy II's away...stuff changed lately.
I bought my 63 Nova 6cyl post for $150. Umm, I believe that was 48 years ago? LOL Last week I snagged a 93 C1500 WT 6cyl with 88,000 miles, original paint, zero rust for $7500. Truck should have brought $12,000. Was looking for a clean T100 for less than $15,000. I was dreaming! Not that many deals left out there. Find someone giving up half way through a build can fetch a good deal if they didn't butcher it.
