    ❤ doing God's work with these videos, CJ. Relationships are king. I wish as a brand new teacher I had this video/your voice as a resource. It took me lots of trial, experience and error to figure out my style as a type B/laid back teacher. So true to ask yourself: is this prepping the kid for success in life beyond the classroom? And informing kids: this is a kindness: is a part of that as they learn to navigate the world. 💯

    I really needed to see this today. I'm a first year teacher and I'm struggling immensely with balancing a desire to have a low key environment and needing to gain control over my room. I think you really spoke to some of my specific struggles(being intimidated by student conflict...occasionally just being too lazy), but I would like to add that an idea that one of my instructional coaches has brought up is the idea of needing to build up emotional stamina, basically that what she saw happening to me was, somewhat as you touched on, what seemed to be killing me wasn't the huge confrontations but all of the little places I had to push back, like telling kids that they had to sit at their assigned desk, or that they couldn't go to the bathroom after a certain time. Those little tiny moments of having to push back just drained me, and continue to drain me, but she has continued to emphasize that as I build up that stamina it will eventually get easier because if I reinforce my policies consistently over time the students will eventually internalize them, and those little conflicts will decrease.
    At least that's the hope, I don't know.
    I think it's interesting that you brought up late work, because that also continues to be a struggle for me. I want to play fair by my students and allow adequate time to complete work, as a first year I often struggle to find the right balance between too much work and too little, leaning towards "too much", so I keep trying to find a way to give students a little bit of a buffer to be able to take care of work they didn't finish in class afterwords...but of course what that's shifted to is a ton of them just saying "I'll do this later" or "I'll do this at home"...and then never doing that. Currently I'm trying what I hope will be a good compromise(all assignments are due by the Sunday after they were assigned since students can turn in almost all work virtually), but already I'm struggling with the number of students that missed that first deadline and are trying to turn work in after I already put a 0 in the grade book.
    Sorry for the novel, just...this spoke to a lot of what I'm going through and I guess I needed to get it out of my system.

      I dealt with this in my first years. I have found you need to put in the effort early and build a reputation for yourself, but it pays off giving you time to breathe for the rest of the year. E.g. stay firm on the seating plan, toilet breaks etc. don't allow a single movement from where you've asked over a week or two and you'll get very very little pushback for the rest of the year. I also found a lot of the draining energy was coming from the emotion attached to having to enforce rules whereas now I always remain calm and treat it like a process, just state the outcomes of not following instructions and follow through using clear language "if you do not do this, this will happen"
      In terms of work, you can only lead a horse to the water - provide great task instructions, activities, scaffolding, keep the parents updated on their work ethic then you can feel good knowing you've done your job well regards of student work progress - students need to take responsibility for their ethic, especially teenagers.

    I should have known this before my relationship with one student who kept cursing and judging my ideas during class went wrong. I thought she was being disrespectful but probably she was not. She was not smart enough to know that she was being disrespectful acting like that and I should have let her know. Thank you for the reflection!

    This speaks volumes! I don't like to rock the boat, as it was, I felt like some students would flip and I would literally lose their trust. Like, if I get on to them about their behavior I would have to work extra hours to build that foundation. However, setting them up for success means raising the bar. This is a very fine line. Certainly something that needs precision and fine tuning to get that balance.

    I am a third year teacher and really needed to hear this as I start second semester. I was the “late work teacher my first year” and I can still be complacent about certain behaviors. But I appreciate your honest reflections and experiences-I know I’ll get there.

    Great points! If you don't have a handle on classroom management, it's disastrous! My BCBA certification helps with my magic in the classroom and it's definitely differentiated depending on how each one responds! 🤓

      @@CJReynolds First and foremost you definitely need to know how each student operates. You even touched on that when you mentioned to give them a look or a hand up or are we good? At the beginning of the year I do an all about me worksheet so I have information on them about what they like to listen to for music, what they like to watch, what are good edible reinforcements for them, among other things they like to do. I have a cozy classroom setup with a Starbucks feel. As a matter of fact we have coffee talk every morning where the students pull their desks together and interact with conversations to get the day started. They are even allowed to order hot chocolate or something from the coffee bar that I have set up in the classroom... Decaffeinated of course. We also do meditation to get the day started. During instructional time I use a ton of positive reinforcement, redirection, planned ignoring, and I'm very animated to capture their attention. It's exhausting but that's what works. I learn about each student's behavior and keep data and tend to put an intervention together on an informal level. This has been successful and I've seen a ton of student success from it! At the end of the day before they break for lunch I do a watch party if they've done all their work. They get to choose something that they want to watch and typically will pick Mr Bean, America's funniest home videos, or some kind of ridiculous funny video. I also reward them with popcorn. I also train new teachers and I always have them watch your videos because you are an inspiration to the field. We need that right now more than ever!!

    The problem is... where I work, we're not allowed to take off late marks and we have to accept work up until the very last day. I HATE IT.

  • @Learninglotsoflanguages
    @Learninglotsoflanguages 4 месяца назад

    I really want to stop accepting late work. It's a bit of a school policy to give one week then zero it out, but admin are pretty understanding and maybe if I bring it up, it might help. At the same time, my fear would be that then the students would just not do it. It's like I want to push for higher level of work by revising work and sending in the best they can do. But the students I have this year have the least amount of care about education I've ever seen in over 10 years of teaching. It's hard when they just don't care.
    Similarly, I'm at a loss for what to do with management because things work for a bit, but really the same kids just do the same stuff. They don't care if they get a 0 or have to write paragraphs or get detentions and suspensions. So why waste my time chasing them for writing consequences or staying after school for DTs when they couldn't care less? So I remind them of the expectations. I stop talking when they try to talk over me. I walk around. But I spend half my class time reminding them what the expectation is. I'm tired :p
