    Now that's the way to proper rhodium plate a piece! No cuttings corners. Should last 2 years with medium wear.

      The only liquid you should heat is electro clean. If using silver, then use nickel.

    If you have a vintage chrome-plated watch on which the plating has failed and is flaking off, can you remove the old plating and re-plate with Rhodium?
    No idea what metal the casing really is, sadly.

    • @StullerInc
      @StullerInc  4 года назад

      Hi Scott! Here's what our Tools Tech Team says: the short answer is yes, you can. Removing the old chrome may prove a bit challenging, but once that is complete, the main concern is getting the newly revealed surface as clean as possible. It can’t be too clean. Beyond this, the plating process should proceed as normal. Hope this helps! --Stuller Marketing

      Chrome can be removed in hot caustic solution,check Google,also used for old metal bumperbars, if it is chrome then it should have copper plate under it. if nickel you are going to need a acid solution to electricaly etch it away.
      The shinier the undelayer the better the Rodium finish. and plate a bit longer then 30 seconds! obvious that the item has been worn in a wearing environment.

      No, rhodium has to plate over another metal like nickel or copper. But it comes out better when the piece is polished shiny. It’s all based on ratio and the shine on whatever you’re plating is going to be the shine you get with rhodium, nickel or gold

    • @lkkjhtemmexv1838
      @lkkjhtemmexv1838 5 лет назад

      OFF course it will wear out...
      you need the item made be in that material in oreer in not wear off, the advantage is you can polish the times you want you get always a good nice look.
      thast why i nevel buy electroplatted items, like gold platted, rodium plateg, galviunesed etccc...always inox, gold , silver etc,, in original materilas...
      electroplatted are fake stuff, soon or later they are done and ugly.

      That's correct. The plating process only sticks to the metal, not to gemstones. I've had my 43 year old diamond solitaire, set in 14kt white gold replated numerous times since I first got it, and the only way the diamond has ever been affected is that it always comes back to me EXTREMELY clean and sparkling! That's because of the thorough cleaning and polishing process the entire ring is subjected to prior to it being replated. Being cleaned thoroughly in the ultrasonic cleaner removes all traces of "muck, mud, crud," and whatever else it may have been subjected to since the last time it was cleaned, (which is frequent, in my hands, as I cannot tolerate jewelry which does not shine and sparkle like the day it was first sold) and then there is also the renewed reflective surface of the metal that helps brighten up the whole thing as well.
      And of course, nobody would ever have their diamond jewelry replated like this if it did ANY kind of damage to the most expensive part of the piece!

      Plating costs so much because Rhodium solution actually contains micro-particulates of precious meals. The amount of rhodium solution shown in this video contains over a thousand dollars worth of gold, it's just in tiny particles waiting to be bonded to a metallic surface. Additionally, in it's liquid form rhodium is highly acidic and gives of carcinogenic vapors. What the video did not highlight is the ventilation and breathing protection aparati needed to work with rhodium SAFELY.

      @@laleki9 - Plus there are things like overhead costs just in running a jewelry store, and a good portion of this involves paying people to do all the work that's needed to a piece before you can even start plating it. You don't just stick a piece of jewelry on the wire, dip it for a minute, and call it done. First it needs to be examined to be sure that there's no repair work that's required before you even start with the plating process. Plating is the absolutely last thing that should be done to a piece of jewelry, so it is extremely wasteful to plate something before it's been determined if there are say, prong tips that need to be redone first on any of the stones that might be in a piece. If you try and polish a piece thoroughly before even examining it, and there are broken/weak or even missing prong tips, you could end up sending tiny stones spinning off into space! Then you've got expensive repairs to do before you ever get around to plating anything. There's a hundred or more issues that need to be eliminated before you start in on the plating process, and a pair of well trained eyes attached to a pair of equally well trained hands don't come cheap! Materials are only part of the cost picture of paying only $40 to take good care of your jewelry.
