Depending on what you have lying around, it should be around $30 if you need absolutely everything including hook-up wire. However, pretty much everything in the schematic is dirt-common, so if you're thinking of doing more than a pedal or two, you may want to get the kits they sell that have the parts and values commonly used in electronics projects -- any resistor, capacitor and transistor kit worth its salt is going to include the values/models usable in this schematic.
I'm a pedal builder for a living, I watch your videos slot when I'm building. I got a real smile watching you get the fuzz tone working. It's always such a great feeling watching someone get a pedal going. A few of my customer's have got into building and I'm not gonna lie it's bad for business but I love helping them trouble shoot the stuff and getting it rocking.
Great fuzz tone! Can't wait to see what you house it in. I've built a few simple and not so simple fuzzes before. Might be worth it to try different transistors in future builds. You can use little sockets and audition them like you would preamp tubes. Just my $0.02
I'll probably knock up a second one and try some different transistors. I wanted to see if the bog standard silicon NPN sounded ok first and just get my feet wet. Thanks for watching!
For a first time fuzz pedal build Brad I think you nailed it. That thing sounds awesome. Might be worth going a little further and adding an octave element to it. Might just be the best Octa-Fuzz ever.
Sounds great Brad. Nailed a whole bunch of 60's70's tones (love the Ritchie B riff). Just shows how a bargain set up could do very well in a recording studio setting. For example Billy Gibbons and his use some years ago of a Marshall Lead 12 combo pcb solid state in the studio.
Brad...you're a bloody legend. It may be a simple feat for a man such as yourself, but I tell you what man. Even with a room mic, that sounds freakin' amazeballs :)
Hal Pecher Those amps are ridiculously rare now, seem really cool though. I love those 60's-70's Solid State and Hybrid Tones, especially the amps with tremolo circuits. Shame we can't find those old USA amps in Germany. Only thing we have that comes close are the Vermona Regent amps, haha.
Next time you make a pedal on a board like this, you should use DIY Layout Creator. It's a free program that is ideal for visualizing layouts for this kind of thing. It's very simple but it does what it needs to and is pretty well designed.
Brad, as a suggestion when soldering extension leads onto a pot, use the helping hands to align the pot so that the shaft is parallel with the ground and lugs are facing straight down. That way you can just use gravity to keep them in place and perfectly straight while soldering them.
Metal housing will provide the shielding need to reduce noise, as is, all the wires are little antennas picking up every little stray frequency. Great vid, thanks Brad.
Actually, that fuzz sounded fucking terrific. Yeah, it's noisy, but they all are. It just goes to show how much wine-sniffery bollocks there is in the pedal world. "Oh yes, these germanium transistors were pulled from the control panel of a u-boat at the bottom of the atlantic in 1946. We spent 8 hours finding the very best balanced pair of germaniums for the ultimate in fuzz tone. Then we point-to-point wired it, because, you know... Boards sound shit... or something..." Ah just fuck off. Build 'em out of any old crap and they sound fine most of the time. I built one about 3 years ago and I was so impressed it's still on my board. It's the most outrageously offensive fuzz you ever heard. Well, that's because I run it flat out, but it's highly offensive in a kind of "Hey honey, I really fuckin' fancy yer sister" kind of way offensive. That's how offensive it is. Think Gary Clark Jnr, after fucking his sister. And his mother*. Very, very offensive indeed. You get the picture. FWIW: I just ordered those boards, and fuck it, ordered the bread-board too via your links. Rock the fuck on, brother. *FWIW: I Haven't shagged Gary Clark Junior's mum. Honest. If Gary Clark Junior reads this: Honest, I'm sure she's a very nice lady indeed. Yer sister's a dirty bitch though!
@NotMarkKnopfler. Dude, find some Chinese plant to make those pedals for a few bucks a piece, start a youtube channel to demonstrate it and describe it exactly like that. You will sell millions at $200 each.
Love the video BUT you didn't talk us thru the circuit. I've been around guitars, amps and effects for over 35 yrs and I'm finally starting to get with HowThingsWork and Why Things Work the Way They Do. It's the simplest circuit- I could build this, but you're leaving out all the information, all the experience. Why'd you put components where you put them? What does each component do? The reason we watch guys like you, Dave, Ben Crowe, Michael Cthulu is that you guys are masters at what you do. You have decades of experience and it comes thru as you do things. I'd love to hear the commentary or a voice over as you solder it together(the tune was awesome!). What you might consider boring is what I'm looking for. Please consider releasing a version like that. Thanks, Brad! Killer setlist!
I would ad a DC in jack, you could also see how it sounds at 18 volts another option instead of a pedal is offer that circuit as an ad on to an amp repair/upgrade even adding it to that cigar box amp you did awhile back.
That is actually a pretty good sounding fuzz effect. It seemed perfect for the Satisfaction riff. I would suggest installing it into a metal case that you could then earth to create a fariday cage in order to fight some of that interference this thing is susceptible to. Something like a cigarette box could be ideal. Another possible project pedal could be a noise gate.
Loved the Nirvana sprinkled in towards the end! Yeah man! 🔥🤘🏼 sounds nice! In the process of ordering one of these builds through Seeker Electronics out in CA.
I would kick in money on this channel for more pedal builds and troubleshooting in the style of brad. Man on man missionary is Brads favorite style but doing pedals would be nice.
I’ll definitely be getting one of those power supplies! . Any time I hear old silicon fuzzes, I think of the Cheech and Chong movies and records- Tommy Chong LOVED using a fuzz on his material.
Cool video, keep doing what you do. Branch out into anything you want to, it’s your channel!!! I hope to dabble in some pedals in the near future as well.
Sounds great. You've given me an idea. I hope I can find the schematics. I found it! Back in the early 80s I found a Fuzz that plugged directly into the guitar jack. It sounded INCREDIBLE. Had an old Korean Hondo LP copy. I paid $75 for the Fuzz in 1980. I put a notch in the little box, then loosened a screw from my guitar jack, so I could turn the little box, the screw would slide into the notch, & it didn't fall out of the guitar. Mine was labeled "Nashville Sound" Boss Tone. It sounded better than any of the pedals my guitar playing buddies had. (Ended up selling the guitar, with the apparatus for $175 to a pretty good player. However after searching, I found it wax actually a "Jordan Boss Tone". I have the schematic now. I'm drooling to put it together. If you want a copy of it, let me know. The closest thing to it is an OLD Big Muff, but IMO the BM isn't nearly as vicious. If you or any one else hasn't heard those little beasts, you're missing out. Turns out a lot Steel players used them.(that's where I found the schematic). Any way, it had been around since the mid 60s from what I've read. But it's a killer, I'm thinking of making a stomp box. It was handy, though as you could dial it from the guitar, but as I said, it wasn't built for Telecasters, or LPs, well any guitar with a jack on the side of the guitar, now a 335 or another model with the jack on the front of the body...unfortunately Strats jacks are out too. Check it out. So jazzed I found it after 35 yrs.
thanks Brad as you may recal i use this type of circuit in both my bass and gutar amps very usfull probably in ten years time not unless i buy your fender tweed ha ha of your fender consert or the gibo gn20
Good build, sounds a liiiiittle bit pignosey for my taste but those barre chords sound thunderous man. If it was available in the 60’s I would have definitely been playing one. Thank you for the video my friend! Awesome job, I learned a lot. I just started breadboarding about 4 months ago and I came up with a killer circuit but I’m just now researching how to transfer to CB’s. Can you recommend an ideal video?
Brad - what is your opinion in regard to having "order everything (online)" versus being able to go to the corner hardware/electronics store. Frankly, I miss the stores.
I order most stuff well in advance and keep in stock. More convenient for me, plus you're not paying the overhead of a store. Many will argue that it kills jobs, but guess what, if I pay more, it kills MY job! :D
Brad do you think 2n5133 transistors could work? I bought a bag of them for less than 7$ im making a rams head big muff but other than that i dont have idea what i could make with them
Completely new to all this haha, I have been watching your videos for a while now and I really enjoy them. If I was to build along with this where would I place an led to indicate on/off in the circuit? Silly question I know but pedal sounds great and you have to start somewhere! Thanks, Marty.
Hi brad, that 60's Fuzzrite that you built sounds pretty cool, I've got a Tonebender Mk I and a Tonebender Mk II pedal that I built myself using germanium transistors and they are sounding pretty cool too, my favorite out of the two is the Mk I though cause it really gets saturated when you turn up the gain, I can easily get that "Satisfaction" Fuzztone with it, if my memory serves me right, it uses three AC128 germanium transistors, the Mk II uses three black DSI OC81D germanium transistor remakes that are relatively low gain, yet they still work great.
I wonder if covering the connections / components with liquid elec tape or flex seal would help sheild from noise?. Deff suck to ever work on again LMAO but thinking output for shielding.
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles". Yeah, one of my old band's. My bass player, James Colby Townsend, wrote the main parts and lyrics on that one. That's him singing the verses. me singing the choruses. We've been best friends since middle school.
try a dod 250 with led clippers , you would like that one , with led clippers its very nice low -medium gain type transparent circuit . . if you want a great diy dirtbox there is a pcb for the carl martin plexitone at tayda electronics . thats a great circuit with a charge pumped 18 volt set up for a higher gain distortion , or there is always building your own RAT. . . as far as Germanium goes you cant beat a fuzz factory and i also recommend the baldwin burns uzzaround - the mictester opamp/ge hybrid is really a great circuit .
Hey Brad, which schematic did you use for this circuit? Did you have to invert the voltage (assuming you used pnp transistors)? Thanks! Love your content:)
Excellent video Brad, I might have a go at this one. I really love your channel. Your editing is really great, especially the funny little eye protection tips today. I'm wondering, do you use a fan to avoid those toxic solder fumes?
Hey Brad, Love your videos man. I've been to Kentucky and played at Cowboys back in late to mid 2004. Love Kentucky. Anywho, I'm interested in breadboarding and learning to read schematics. Could you do a video of reading the schematic and breadboarding it in real time. I think it help me understand things better. thanks
I notice in a lot of your videos you have your own music as background music. This is really cool. It sounds professionally recorded. Did you record it at a studio or with a home track recorder?
I want one! can u make me one? look out dude, you just might turn into the next Mike Matthews. God bless you, your family & great daughters and all the cool stuff you've turned me (and everyone) on to. Someday if I can afford to find a diamond in the rough, you'll be my go-to guy to turn it into a monster
Wow! Reading some of the comments gave me a popsicle headache!! Not getting involved in THAT whole discussion!! Bottom line: That little pedal/project is seriously trick!! I Love it! Just the type of fuzz I've been looking for. How do you think it would translate to bass without major modification? The math involved to arrive at the proper cap values threatens another of those headaches! :-) (Either way, I'm building one!)
Well, the wife didn't appreciate me blasting a fuzz pedal demo early in the morning on her day off (go figure) but I sure did. Awesome stuff. I'm excited to see what you come up with for the housing!
One of the first, coolest things i've build was octafuzz, Push Me Pull You Octave by Tim Escobedo, i'm also mistaken 0.1uf caps for 1uf and it gave a quite interesting results. No diods, pretty simple circuit, highly recommend.
Don't have those, and there are very little if any of them on youtube, i was also looking for it. But really, it would be faster to build it, it has three transistors, all parts are common parts, the only thing i would add is to use germanium transistor in place of a PNP, at least that's what i used, and i'm not sure wether or not silicon transistor will work just as well, and crank the amp a bit. www.diale.org/escobedo.html Also it sounds even better, going into another fuzz/distortion, i bet it would be a good company to mosrite.
The Guitologist And just in case you would want to build an octave pedal, but feel like making something more common, Green Ringer is the way to go. The ultimate would probably be Octavia, but it needs a tranformer.
Crap used in the video:
Circuit Boards: goo.gl/R6P3gH
Breadboard; goo.gl/kR9Udf
Breadboard Jumper Wires: goo.gl/y5Q5nv
Any chance of working out the costing for this pedal? (inc.enclosure and bypass switching)
Music?

building something like this , alot of it would be paying shipping costs , but i would say this can be done for under 50 bucks .
I'm a pedal builder for a living, I watch your videos slot when I'm building. I got a real smile watching you get the fuzz tone working. It's always such a great feeling watching someone get a pedal going. You have a cool attitude, Patty. Thanks for the kind comment.

After the tweak o the pot at 16:25 I think it sounded really good! Thanks for sharing!

Yessir... that’s close to what mine sounds like. Really liked watching you put it on the board Brad. Nice work.
Cool! You got a video or demo of yours? I'd like to check it out.
Of course, give me some time, I’m working on a guitar right now and have to get done...
I could watch this style of vid of you building your take on classic fuzz circuits all day everyday
You’re killing it Brad we are all behind you, and learning, thanks for your time
Great video Brad, I may have to try and build this circuit. What a great raw sound !
Hi Brad................Enjoy your work & presentation, greetings from the UK
Thanks, David.
Brad...you're a bloody legend. It may be a simple feat for a man such as yourself, but I tell you what man. Even with a room mic, that sounds freakin' amazeballs :)
Nicely done Brad.... think I will give it a whirl. Ive been wanting a fuzz for awhile now and that one is pretty darn cool
That was interesting, would love to see more builds. Also would like to see this one when completed. WooHoo.
I used to have a Mosrite amp head with the speaker cab sawed off. It had a Fuzzrite built in with a relay circuit to switch it in and out.

Thanks for that.
I was hoping for this. Thanks, dude.
Brad, as a suggestion when soldering extension leads onto a pot, use the helping hands to align the pot so that the shaft is parallel with the ground and lugs are facing straight down. That way you can just use gravity to keep them in place and perfectly straight while soldering them.
Good tip! I'm too obtuse to think of asking gravity's help.
Metal housing will provide the shielding need to reduce noise, as is, all the wires are little antennas picking up every little stray frequency. Great vid, thanks Brad.

@NotMarkKnopfler. Dude, find some Chinese plant to make those pedals for a few bucks a piece, start a youtube channel to demonstrate it and describe it exactly like that. You will sell millions at $200 each.
You had me cracking up with laughter... Rock On indeed sir. Rock On.
Glad to raise a smile!

I'll do a rundown in the final video. You aren't the only one who asked.
Those who asked the question did not watch PT 1 as you referred to the circuit and had an image of schematic
Liked that School part. awesome video as always Brad!
whats the song thats playing during the time laps???

Bet that made you all warm and fuzzy. Great video bro
if only banggood would put all the bits i need for this in one bag,,, i would buy it. love this kinda stuff Brad... more please.
Both Keef and Nokie woulda been proud, Brad...another great job!
Hey Brad - really enjoying your videos! Keep em coming...
Thanks Adam.
Made this as my first self-made pedal. It was super great! And fun!
That is actually a pretty good sounding fuzz effect. It seemed perfect for the Satisfaction riff. I would suggest installing it into a metal case that you could then earth to create a fariday cage in order to fight some of that interference this thing is susceptible to. Loved the Nirvana sprinkled in towards the end! Yeah man! 🔥🤘🏼 sounds nice! In the process of ordering one of these builds through Seeker Electronics out in CA.
Great as usual. Always learn a heap of stuff watching your videos.
The guy who used to make these for Mosrite, Ed Sanner, used to repair my amps back in my hometown of Bakersfield, California.
Brad, you’re an awesome player. You should post more of that side of your guitology.
I would kick in money on this channel for more pedal builds and troubleshooting in the style of brad. Man on man missionary is Brads favorite style but doing pedals would be nice.
Brad,
I like that you threw in “School” by Nirvana in your test of the circuit. That fuzz has a great sound, keep up the great work.
Britain's Finest thanks man. Will do.
Very cool Brad sounds great, and home growned as well,Cheers
I’ll definitely be getting one of those power supplies!
.
Any time I hear old silicon fuzzes, I think of the Cheech and Chong movies and records- Tommy Chong LOVED using a fuzz on his material.
My Momma talking to me tryin' to tell me how to live.
But I don't listen to her 'cause my head is like a sieve! lol Love that movie!
Great job Brad, sounds good. Interested in hearing this through a Marshall or fender.
When I get the housing done, I'll bust out a real amp.
Man your pedal sounds great. I would like to have one of those myself. It`s out of this world.
How much ill take one.... I got a mod tone fuzz and I cant get it off one on the dial its just to much fuzz...
I might do a very small run instead of just one. You aren't the only one asking.
... what is the song playing during the build? I can't find it anywhere...
how bout a distortion, or a phaser, or a delay pedal? i like our fuzz pedal. sounds great.
Sorry if I missed it, song on the assembly part? That was cool. Shout out for whoever!
Cool video, keep doing what you do. Branch out into anything you want to, it’s your channel!!! I hope to dabble in some pedals in the near future as well.
Hey Brad, did you even put this circuit in a housing? There was never a mention of it in other videos. Would like to see what you did.
Sounds great. You've given me an idea. I hope I can find the schematics. I found it! Back in the early 80s I found a Fuzz that plugged directly into the guitar jack. It sounded INCREDIBLE. Lots of square wave goodness right there.
Never saw the 'School' riff from the Bleach album coming.. glad to see you snuck it in.
BONUS POINTS to anyone who can name all the songs I played in the demo.
The Guitologist I would love to know what song you used during the circuit build! That was rockin’!
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
Satisfaction, Smoke on the Water, In a Gadda Da Vida, House of the Rising Sun, School.
Theres a Skynyrd or 38 special song too? Cant quite place it.
Let see... Waterloo by ABBA, Something something stupid something by Adele, and MmmBop by Hanson?
I really needed to find this video today!!
I would love to see a side by side comparison between a pedal (off the shelf) and the same but home made.
Digging all the content, man!
Thanks man. Appreciate the comment as always.
Audience engagement man, gotta feed the algorithm.
thanks Brad as you may recal i use this type of circuit in both my bass and gutar amps very usfull probably in ten years time not unless i buy your fender tweed ha ha of your fender consert or the gibo gn20
Hi Please could you put a link to the bag of boards. Thanks
Circuit Boards: goo.gl/R6P3gH
14:47 what song are you playing here? It sounds so damn familiar
Nokie Edwards was the reason I chose to build this circuit. ruclips.net/video/D-n9wNCfDNQ/видео.html
Ah yes, it was familiar because I watched that :)
House of the rising sun I think
Hi I was curious, What type of guitar Amp did you use with the telecaster in this test ?
Thanks !!
Gift from Jimi to Eric Braun. Fuzz history.
what was the music you were playing during the build?
I think i heard a little bit of Ram Jam Black Betty in there... awesome.
Do you know when you will work on the nutube again?
Don't know yet. Gotta cut off the flow of repairs first.
Brad...What was the music playing during the build?? Nice stuff!
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
Is it just me or is something way off with the guitar harmony part playing during the fast forward assembly?
Hi Brad, have you had high winds over there? Just noticed the tash had gone. 😀
Great video! But Where do I instal the on/off switch?
Brad do you think 2n5133 transistors could work? I bought a bag of them for less than 7$ im making a rams head big muff but other than that i dont have idea what i could make with them
What is the name of the song starting at about 5:50?
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
have you used and lithium 9 volts?
Sounds great!
Love this, you could do a whole channel on building and repairing peddles, Do Brian May's, you repaired the Deacy amp you could build his peddle lol
Could do. A poll on the next video to see what pedal to build next time would be a good idea.
Sure, jump right to the most difficult thing you can think of. :P
Definitly hear the reduction in noise from here when u clip the green 1. Bam a lam , not heard that 1 since 70s, cool.
Brad, your videos are awesome! Thank you :)
hey, who was the track you played when you were building? fakin rocked.
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
Completely new to all this haha, I have been watching your videos for a while now and I really enjoy them. If I was to build along with this where would I place an led to indicate on/off in the circuit? Silly question I know but pedal sounds great and you have to start somewhere! Thanks, Marty.

I'd suggest mounting the board flat in a case, with pots coming out of the end of the case. a bit like the old Shin Ei fuzz pedals.
What was the song at 8 min in!!
What is that song at 5:48
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
Cool stuff. I will look you up when I'm in L-town. I have a sister there that I'm fixing to visit.
Hell yeah. That was awesome!
Not too shabby at all.
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE ARTIST THATS PERFORMING THE SONG ON THIS VIDEO. AND WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SONG.PLEASE.
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles"
I wonder if covering the connections / components with liquid elec tape or flex seal would help sheild from noise?. Deff suck to ever work on again LMAO but thinking output for shielding.
Nope. Plastic and other insulators do not block electromagnetic waves.
How much would you charge to build another one for me?
Fun build. What was that song you played during the construction? Was it one of yours? It was awesome!
Electric Tooth Syndrome "Bottles". Yeah, one of my old band's. My bass player, James Colby Townsend, wrote the main parts and lyrics on that one. That's him singing the verses. me singing the choruses. We've been best friends since middle school.

It was done in a garage.
@@TheGuitologist insane!
@@TheGuitologistit's a great track! 👍
The beginning song???? Something is familiar about it.
Never mind question has been answered..
I am never let down listening and watching your videos! What a great sound!
Well I never! Brad, so talented. Is that a mix of Nirvana mixed with a tinge of Shins? So many albums!
I want one! can u make me one? look out dude, you just might turn into the next Mike Matthews.
Just breadboard it and experiment with changing the .022 cap values. Larger values equal more bass.
That simple, huh? I use .047 in my basses...and those pound very nicely! Thanks! :-)
Got any sound clips or videos?
Don't have those, and there are very little if any of them on youtube, i was also looking for it. But really, it would be faster to build it, it has three transistors, all parts are common parts, the only thing i would add is to use germanium transistor in place of a PNP, at least that's what i used, and i'm not sure wether or not silicon transistor will work just as well, and crank the amp a bit. www.diale.org/escobedo.html
Also it sounds even better, going into another fuzz/distortion, i bet it would be a good company to mosrite.
The Guitologist And just in case you would want to build an octave pedal, but feel like making something more common, Green Ringer is the way to go. The ultimate would probably be Octavia, but it needs a tranformer.
Thanks for the link Danich!!
