Was Wollen Wir Trinken? - What Shall We Drink? (English Lyrics)

- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- First written by two French teenagers, Jean Bernard and Jean-Marie Prima, in the 1920s, the song was popularized by Dutch band 'Bots' in the 70s where its original revolutionary lyrics and distinct melody spread to the German Democratic Republic (DDR). The song was then popularized in the Eastern Bloc and among communist and revolutionary groups, and even the IRA due to its performance with altered lyrics by the popular German communist rock and folk group, Oktoberklub.

Honestly, one of my favorite left leaning songs. Its not as bombastic as others, but still has a great tune and I love Oktoberklub.
A good old friend of my family (who passed away 8 years ago) was a commander in the navy of the Wehrmacht and he told me they sang it already in the second world war. I would not automatically categorize it as left leaned.
@@MaximusVA_ text was altered
@@MaximusVA_ The original song is suspected to have originated in the middle ages, it's not from the nazis.
I'm not even a leftist and it's still a jam
@@MaximusVA_ It was originally about peasent revolutionaries, so i would say fairly left leaning.

I wish to be educated by the community, and other people. I am American and have never stepped foot into a European country or have been educated on anything other than like ww2 and a bit of ww1. I could look up the meaning of this song. but I think an explanation from someone else means more than just having a google search and reading whatever the wiki gives me.
This version of the song is about a revolutionary struggle. "Dieser Kampf war lang" means "this fight was long". The lyrics tells about fighters, who are drinking for the victory of revolution after the struggle.
Luis Corvalan is also mentioned. He was a chilean senator and the general secretory of chilean comparty. In this song, he is standing at Red Square, but I didn't find any information about his reeal visit. This part could mean the campaign for his liberation, because he was imprisoned by the pinochetean regime. Like, "the spirit of Corvalan is with us". (Corvalan is staying at Red Square, drinking for our deal; we're drinking for Luis Corvalan)
Original version is a celt song about cidre, actually. Breton one, if I remember it right.
Respect to your wish of community education. Hope I have helped you well (and didn't confuse anything)

I am not trying to be negative towards the writing of the song but the lyrics are very heavily adapted into a almost brainwashing level of communistic ideology into one song. The original showed brotherhood this version is about comradery.
