  • "The Eddie", also known as The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, is a big wave surfing tournament held at Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The tournament is named for native Hawaiian, champion big wave surfer, and life-saving Waimea Bay lifeguard, Eddie Aikau. Lifeguard Luke Shepardson was dubbed the champion of the 2022-2023 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational on Sunday, fitting for a competition created to honor pioneering Big Wave surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau.
Massive waves washed up on onlookers, and Ocean Safety was working overtime making nearly 70 rescues across Oahu. But the winner of the competition went to lifeguard Luke Shepardson, who had a nearly perfect score. He's the first lifeguard to ever win the Eddie, on the clock, making rescues in between heats throughout the event -- a full circle moment.
Invitees featured, in order of appearance:
Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Kai Lenny, Nic Von Rupp, Eli Olson, Peter Mel, Ezekiel Lau, Mason Ho, Tikanui Smith, Billy Kemper, Tyler Larronde, Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, Kohl Christensen, Keali’i Mamala, Landon McNamara, John John Florence, Jake Maki, Aaron Gold, Greg Long, Luke Shepardson, Makani Adric, Mark Healey, Koa Rothman, Jamie Mitchell
