  • If the navigation screen in your Aston Martin is having problems opening up properly, it's likely the gears need to be replaced. This is a job you can do yourself and the parts are pretty inexpensive. For the full write-up, check out:

    Hello Rich,
    Hope all is well.
I’m writing today to say thank you for the fix on the Aston Martin Vantage navigation screen.
My 2007 Vantage 8 has approximately 25,000 miles on it and I drive it as a fun weekend car. I’ve owned the vehicle since 2012.
The navigation screen was slow to deploy and as you stated in your video, I often had to help it along.
I very seldom have someone in the car, but it is embarrassing when that happens.
    Also… very annoying!
    I don’t like when things don’t work!
I would have never had the courage or the know how to correct this issue.
Removing part of the dashboard was not something I was prepared to do.
However, when I watched your RUclips video, I knew with your direction that I could perform the repair as you did.
Thankfully, you were able to provide the necessary gears and pieces to correct the problem.
The repair worked like a charm!
The screen is deploying as it should, and due to the suggested lubrication, nice and smooth!
    Wow! I’m so pleased.
So thanks again for your video, the tools and direction.
I’ll continue to follow your website and reach out in the future should I have any questions or concerns.
As you would expect from guys like us, I have attached a picture of my Aston Martin.
    Best wishes and continued success,
    Michael

Rich, just wanted to say thanks for all the great DIY videos on maintaining the Aston V8V. I've been following you for years and your videos have helped me change all the fliuids, replace the air filters, bleed the breaks, change out the door shocks, hood and trunk shocks , cleaning the throttle body, and now swapping out the navigation gears. Got it all working by following this video and next, I'll tackle changing out the thermostat when it gets warmer. Thanks for all you do to support the Aston community.

Literally just completed this real time along with the video. So easy. Great walk through Rich! Had the gears in my glove box for 3 months. Had been waiting thinking taking the ski slope off would be difficult. Took it off today to add forged carbon fiber wrap and couldn't have been more wrong.

Brilliant to have another great tutorial from you. I don't know how you left the full glass of wine alone!!

I wasn't sure how obvious it would be, but that's an entire bottle of wine in one glass. Did it as a joke for the video but I did manage to finish the "glass" while editing the video ;)

Hi ! Great video . My screen is now going down and can hear the gears - couldn’t before but won’t go up! It tries but fails . Also I’m confused about the spring mechanism in the waterfall cover and where the springs actually go- couldn’t tell from your other video. Thanks

Very helpful video. Is there anyway to purchase gear B instead of the ones you are replacing in this video. I’m having an issue with my screen as well. The motor works fine, I took apart the side with gears and after a wile I finally figured out that gear B is most likely my issue because all the rest of the gears are working and looking all good. But it seems that gear B is just spinning without moving the rest of the gears under pressure. So if it’s out and you just try to spin it in your hand Is it supposed to spin fairly easy or it supposed to have some tension to it. It almost feels that over time this gear it’s not putting enough tension and just keeps spinning with gear A and not the rest of the gears. But with a little help it moves just fine. Please let me know if I can buy this specific gear. Thanks

At the 8:10 mark I say that the top white gear gets reused to so don't remove it. I meant to say that it gets reused so don't dispose of it. It does get removed so the two black gears can be replaced, but it gets reused once those black gears have been swapped out.
Also, I've never done a close-in film showing what I was working on in close detail like this before and there were a whole lot'a lessons learned! Sorry for the bad camera aiming!

Hey, Richard. Great video as always. I’ve been a long term subscriber of the channel. I’ve finally come to a point in life where an ‘07 Vantage (six speed) is within the budget. Would you recommend the Vantage over a 911 of the same era? The Vantage is gorgeous and seems more interesting than a 911. I wanted to hear your opinion since you have years of experience with the vehicles. I heard the Vantage is fairly reliable-against popular belief/stigma. Thanks!

I'm obviously biased toward the Aston, but I do have plenty of friends with Porsches and I did test drive a 997 C2S before buying the Aston.
The shortest summary I can give is that neither car is perfect. Both have flaws and both can be expensive to repair. However, they're both fantastic cars that do what they're designed to do very well: The Porsche is clinical in its approach to the driving experience while the Aston is emotional.
Once every year or so I think to myself that I'd like to get a 997 TT, but... I'm too happy with my Aston and now that I've quit my job to just do Redpants, there's no way I can afford both so the Aston would have to go (and that's not going to happen).
The Aston is going to be far more rare and get more appreciation. There's far more availability for Porsche parts and services. Both have long enough histories that the problems they do have are fairly well documented. Both are great to drive.
What made me choose the Aston after driving both was that I got out of it feeling butterflies, and I didn't have that with the Porsche. The 997 was a great car, but I fell in love with the Vantage.

Redpants I appreciate the response! Your description is the same feeling I have towards both vehicles. There’s something that seems so special about the Vantage (besides the V8 manual, of course) that the 911 misses.
I had an opportunity to sit in both, back-to-back, this last Friday. The Aston was just felt like more of an occasion and personified that “Bond” character.
I’m a DIY guy that wrenches on his own cars, so I appreciate your videos.

would be great to see the actual in car removal process....just a suggestion...that is the most scary part...

I did film it but it didn't turn out well at all. I'm going to do it again soon, but I'm also working on getting a few housekeeping things sorted so my videos are more consistent in style, production, etc, and want to finish that up before doing more of them. (It also means I'll be redoing jobs from older videos to improve the videos for those jobs!)

An explanation as to what was the cause of the failure would be helpful (ie. gear teeth broken, worn down, etc.) . Otherwise, great video!

I sell quite a few of these things. I've had the DIY Guide on my website for a while but never made a video for it. Figured I might as well since mine went bad!
