There are 2 ways to mitigate this. Gently packing the grounds really helps a lot. What I do is put a permeant metal filter in the paper filter and stir until it becomes soupy. Then all the grounds are well extracted. It also prevents the paper filter from occasionally collapsing. At the end of brewing I use a spoon to move the grinds from metal filter to paper and kind of wring it out before going in the compost. This coffee maker can make great coffee with a little help instead of buying a much more expensive one.
I also noticed this issue and realized I was not getting all of my coffee utilized in the brew. I have a different Mr. Coffee but the basket looks the same. Mine came with a flat filter that fits over the basket. I've found that if you use the filter, the water DOES get evenly distributed. So I advise using the filter, even if you don't care to filter the water, as it will solve this problem. You can use the same filter indefinitely if you don't want to buy replacements. (The instructions say to replace them every few months.) Just rinse it now and then.
That darn swing arm is 1" or so too short. I too have a "short swing arm" model that is about 8 years old now. I made a plastic ring from day 1 that keeps the filter from collapsing and it is fool proof. I made it out of leftover plastic plumbing strap 5/8" wide, the kind with small screw holes in it. I cut a length of a sufficient circumference 1-1/2" overlap to be able to staple it together so that it fits into the filter basket about 1/3 the way down keeping the paper filter from folding over and grounds from working their way into the carafe. I rinse it out daily along with the empty filter basket and I am good to go for the next time. Not for nothing... there seemed to be double the amount of coffee grounds in that filter for 12 cup capacity. It's like she was setting herself up for failure just to prove a point, yet I could be wrong as to the amount of grounds in the filter basket.
We tried an expensive Ninja that has the shower head, a cone filter, and a slightly higher brew temp than Mr. Coffee. Our Mr. Coffee brews as shown in this video and has a much better taste than the Ninja. I guess this means that the Mr. Coffee gets it done in spite of the fact that it looks like a fail OR maybe we just like crappy brewed coffee, lol.
How about the temperature? Does it brew between 195 and 205°F and does it brew at this temperature from the beginning or does it begin to brew maybe at lower temperature ? How long does the process take and finally how long does this kind of machine last ? If you are lazy then get yourself a Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker or just make manual pour over coffee which is with proper brewing technique superior to any auto drip.
The more expensive coffee machines have a showerhead water dispenser into the grounds...my old old mr coffee died thank god...bought a new basic $10 black friday special...so decided to make it better....I took a tuna fish can, punched holes evenly all across the can....placed it on top of the grounds before turning the machine on ..this machine has the ability to pull the pot out and pour a cup....so i start the brewing cycle without the pot in...by doing this, all the grounds get saturated...carefull to watch the water level only dispenses 1 cup...then insert the carraffe....all the grounds are now saturated, and the remainder of the brewing water dispenses evenly .....DAMN.. I' M A GENIUS. .(cheapscate👍😃) $10 showerhead coffee maker👍👍👍😃
It's not "lower" vs "higher" end. It's Mr Coffee. It's a flaw in design and they've had it this way for quite a lot of years. I dealt with it for almost a decade until the thing died. However one thing this shower head to the side thing really fails at is sometimes it will fill up and over the side of the filter. The filter will collapse and then you find coffee mud/grounds in your decanter. Very annoying.
flexor212000 glad to know it's just. It ours. This happens a lot in this coffee maker. I thought for some reason it was the filters but after using different brand filters it's definitely the coffee pot.
I've had this problem numerous times. The water coming out grabs the filter and folds it down allowing all the grounds to just go into the pot. Any suggestions? It's a $30 Mr coffee programmable coffee pot. Bought it brand new a couple weeks ago.
I actually haven't seen a coffeemaker in my family for at least 10-15 years. Here It's almost only french press except that I the coffeegeek in the family brew using lots of different methods. French press,Eva Solo,Chemex(for guests),Hario V60(for me or me and one other guest),Clever dripper,Aeropress,Hario syphon and espresso with Rancilio Silvia. I even have a Turkish Ibrik but I seldom use it.
This is NOT the pot to buy if you are a frequent coffee drinker. Today's brew left grounds all over the counter, as the water in the basket didn't do what even a $10. pot would do. The bells and whistles include a 5-beep alert to let you 'think' it's through brewing. However there's a basket full of water left to brew. SMH...Again, this is NOT the pot to buy. As noted, it offers too much for too little. I disagree with those who say cost more is better. I have a $10. pot that's lasted a dozen years with daily brewing. And, I'm glad I still have it; because, at least it still brews a perfect cup of coffee. Thanks for this video. I'm disappointed that a name brand such as this brews coffee poorly. After seven years, they still have not improved the flaw of this product. I can't imagine bothering to return it for something else. But, who knows, maybe I will. That's the only way they will "know" the product is less than adequate. Peace.
It's really not a fail. If you buy a coffee maker from Wal-Mart for $20 you shouldn't expect anything special. It does what it's supposed to do and nothing more. Mora of the story: You get what you pay for.
Basket-style filters are not very good in general... Cone shaped ones gives more flavor because the water travels through the coffee powder more evenly and all the powder will get soaked in water for a longer time, witch means that more flavor will be absorbed.
This video is perfect. Why would anybody vote it down? I own one of these coffee makers and this is the God's honest truth. It's really that bad. Actually my results are typically worse than the results in this video because I'm not brewing a full pot.

This still applies in 2020...add the Mr. Coffee circular filter to the top of the basket and the water will disperse evenly...or at least better.
i never knew this many people would be so picky about their coffee maker :o
It’s all in the taste.
Basket-style filters are not very good in general... Cone shaped ones gives more flavor because the water travels through the coffee powder more evenly and all the powder will get soaked in water for a longer time, witch means that more flavor will be absorbed.
That is why I use a Technivorm Moccamaster.
Try using fresh grounds next time.
