Overlanding Alstrom Point - Can your AWD make it to Heaven on Earth?

  • 4-19-2021: I've been wanting to visit Alstrom point for YEARS! But quite honestly, the RUclips video's out there aren't very informative. I've watched about 20 of them, and all I see is dash cam footage or a skip right to end the destination.
I've heard about the "slick rock section". Some people have mentioned it as hard, and some people don't even mention it at all. I think I may know why... so watch the video to find out.
There's also some other important information to know. Look at the thumbnail to this video and ask yourself.... "where the heck do I use the restroom?" There are no trees or bushes to hide behind and take a dump. I highly suggest you bring a privacy tent.
Alstrom point sits at 4600 feet and overlooks Lake Powell. The views are absolutely spectacular, but did you know that this lake is basically man made? The lake was created by the Glen Canyon Dam in 1966. It backed up 186 miles of the Colorado River, which filled up 96 canyons. This took 17 years to create!!! 1983 was the year that this lake topped off!!! Crazy right? This made nearly 2,000 miles of coastline. That's more than the west coast of the United States.
BIG THANK YOU to my FRIENDS that provided some of the video footage in this episode!

It's great how the video really portrays the different capabilities of each vehicle. Definitely empowering for the awd community, but also reveals how much less work it is offroading with a 4x4.

In the case of this trail, flex goes along way! And that’s why I’d rate this trail as “easy” for 4wd but moderate for AWD. On the Rutted climb, the Passport was lacking traction because of the lack of flex. You know me, I’m all about keeping it real 😉

DUDE I LOVE YOU!!!! I’ve been researching this trail for a while to see if I could safely take my wife and little kid here in a stock 2019 Outback 3.6. I’ve been trying to figure out whether I should get skid plate, AT tires, a lift - or even a new TRD Pro 4runner just for this trail. I’ll need to gain some off road skills - not for the sake of off roading but to visit places like this in a safe way with my family.
I tried to do a trail recon here last Sep during a road trip to Telluride, but my Subie was in dealer for repairs. So I took my Accord went only as far as the salt mud area you mentioned in this video.

Unfortunately the Guy perished and his girlfriend is recovering in a hospital after being air rescued. Jeebus! Looks like they just had a stock Subaru. This shouldn’t be hard for 4WDs. You just have to be mindful of your diff pumpkin. Once you get up the little gate keeper and transition onto the slick rock, it’s easy to lose the trail, so a system for navigation will help.

I've seen small sedans get up there, I'm assuming they were rentals.

I did it on my 4x4, on street tires, with a motorcycle strap to the back!! It's a very easy off-road trail

Could I get up here in f150 4x4 with goodyear duratracs?

It shouldn’t be a problem for you. The condition of the gate keeper was a bit worse when I returned here few months later, but we were able to find a good line to get up.

Please don't encourage people to do offroad trails in 2wd for a "challenge" it needlessly beats up the trail.

Hey , not trying to be a smartass at all !!
I just heard “ triple locked “ and that got my attention because IMHO that’s the holy grail for off-roading (my dream used to be a triple locked FJ80) but it’s also very rare these days.
I had to go back and review all of Jeep’s different systems . Other than the Rubicons and the PowerWagon that’s it for a front and rear locker.
QuadraDrive 2 is similar to your Passport with electronic rear LSD
“ brake lock “ differential is what they use in their open front & rear diffs like on the QuadraTrac
